Is Vladimir Putin's Downfall Near Thanks to the Ukraine War? (19FortyFive)

Putin has sought to paint a rosy picture of Russia's economic outlook. He's declared that Western sanctions have failed.

“The beginning of the end of Putin started some time ago. The ex-Russian banker, who’s been accused of embezzlement by the Russian government, has said the deterioration of his relationship with Putin made him fear for his life, per BBC News. “In one day, they destroyed what was built over many years. I do believe that this speeds up his demise.” Meanwhile, Russia’s economy has been left reeling from the slew of sanctions imposed on it by countries across the globe. Major companies have left Russia and inflation is skyrocketing.

The clip, which was filmed just before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February, showed him gripping a chair and pressing his hand to his chest to stop it shaking as he greeted Alexander Lukashenko. There is even growing speculation that his personal decision to go to war with Ukraine was as a result of being terminally ill. Add to this the remarkable plot twist of Russian military incompetence and Ukrainian battlefield success and you get moral and narrative arcs which suggest there might be a happy and safe ending for the world after all. More and more reliant on a narrowing circle of hardline advisors, Putin has dismissed attempts by other officials to warn him of the devastating economic and political cost of the “special military operation”. Many insiders are concerned that Putin’s commitment to continue the invasion will doom Russia to years of isolation and heightened tension that will leave the economy crippled, its security compromised and its global influence gutted. Recent evidence indicates that people taking immune-suppressing medication, such as cancer patients or those with chronic conditions, are known to be at risk of catching a severe case of Covid. Many are speculating that this was behind Putin’s decision to sit at an absurdly long desk, metres away from foreign leaders and even his own colleagues. Now, all we have is a pastiche of Soviet gerontocracy, with Putin nodding perfunctorily, offering a grunt through his botoxed jowls to Shoigu, ordering him to seal off Ukraine’s Azovstal steel plant so that “not a fly should be able to pass through”. For Vladimir Putin it became a matter of now or never.

Vladimir Putin ready to 'declare all-out war on Ukraine as payback ... (Scottish Daily Record)

Vladimir Putin is poised to announce an all-out war on Ukraine, months after barring Russian media from referring to his nation's invasion as a “war”.

Russia is also a member of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) that includes several other former Soviet nations. Mobilisation would mean Russia will need to call up reservists and keep conscripts beyond their one-year term, a politically fraught decision. He questioned why Russia had yet to turn Ukraine’s airfields into “lunar craters”. “This smells of further desperation,” he said, adding that the appointment could be a “precursor move” to Putin calling for a declaration of war on May 9. After reeling off a list of Moscow’s failures - from the sinking of the flagship of its Black Sea fleet to “acts of sabotage” against infrastructure within Russia - he asked: “What else has to happen before the dwarves in the Kremlin realise they are in an all-out, harsh war and start to act accordingly?” “The military are outraged that the blitz on Kyiv has failed,” a source close to Russian military officials told The Telegraph.

Vladimir Putin — the 'liternoye' killer (The Hill)

In addition to returning to Stalin’s killing fields in Ukraine, Vlad the Poisoner, as he is sometimes secretly called in Russia, has returned to Stalin’s pattern of liternoye killings in Moscow, Spain and elsewhere to stop opposition to his increasingly bloody and mad scheme in Ukraine. The most prolific of the many deaths were accomplished in Paris in 1925-35 by a group of special assassins known as the Yasha Group. They posed as bakers, fish mongers and small business owners, but dealt death through bioweapons, poisons and faked suicides to many of Stalin’s enemies. Putin has already emulated Stalin in his invasion of Ukraine to “liberate” the country. A secret CIA study for the Warren Commission, declassified and released only in 1993, concluded that there were many apparently natural, staged deaths by the KGB in Western Europe, particularly of targeted Russian emigres. NKVD (the Soviet Union’s interior ministry) defector Walter Krivitsky, who killed many for Stalin and was himself murdered in a fake suicide, famously remarked that any fool could murder someone, but it takes a true artist to stage a “natural death” from disease or suicide. The Putin era has been marked with many such poisonings and murders of other political opponents and writers.

Xi has made his choice: he is sticking with Vladimir Putin (Spectator.co.uk)

Xi Jinping has made his choice. He is sticking with his 'best friend' Vladimir Putin, and no end of Russian atrocities or wishful thinking in the west is ...

When Zhang is not building wind turbines he is a member of China’s rubber stamp parliament and a related advisory body to the Communist party. As the CCP was becoming ever more complicit with Russian barbarity, reports emerged that the UK government is to allow the take-over by a Chinese state-backed company of Newport Wafer Fab, Britain’s biggest microchip factory. Beijing has, does and will continue to use trade, investment and market access as tools of coercion, and even before the Ukraine war, many western businesses were re-examining their supply chains and investments. But there is a wider lesson here – about the danger of over-dependence on any aggrieved dictator with imperialist dreams. He said the two sides will ‘promote a multi-polar world and democracy in international relations.’ In a nutshell, this explains the common way they see the world – their hunger for an international order that is safe for autocrats. There has been a chorus of western voices calling on China to act ‘responsibly’, exercise its influence with Putin, and generally live up to its supposed commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity. If he has any unease over Ukraine, it is because Russia’s incompetent armed forces so far have failed in their objectives and Putin has flaunted his thuggery to the world in a manner that can’t be easily glossed over. It is calculating that they will soon fray, along with western unity, and to this end has put considerable effort into trying to drive a wedge between Europe and America, and between European nations. The ability of Russia to ride out sanctions depends more than anything else on help from China’s energy giants, to whom Moscow is dangling offers of cheap gas and oil. The CCP has taken this toxic brew into universities and schools, with teachers required to attend lectures on how to ‘unify thoughts and correctly guide students’ understanding’ of the conflict. Their axis of autocracy presents a far-reaching challenge to western democracies, which the UK in particular is struggling to come to terms with. On Friday China’s foreign ministry spokesman accused Nato of messing up Europe and stirring up conflicts in the Asia-pacific region.

Specifically it worked “towards inhibition and [to] limit their decision-making” as they had to deal with Russia’s actions on the battlefield, and brace for the impact of choices off it. However, even amidst Russian efforts to weaken the west, the US and UK both recently announced new measures in support of Ukraine. The “energy weapon” of the gas and oil supplies that Russia holds over Europe has long been a significant sticking point in the ongoing war. Western leaders were said to be aware of his efforts to seek out political alliances that might help circumnavigate any sanctions, as they prepared for the further impact of any changes to oil and gas supply. He told NBC News : “Whether it’s trying to call in favours from [Hungarian President Victor] Orban’s government, trying to help Marine Le Pen win the election in France or the direct use of the energy weapon in Poland and Bulgaria to try to get ahead of sanctions, Vladimir Putin is reading the tea leaves and sees that the West is trying to cut off oil and gas, and if he moves first he might be able to divide us.” This was viewed not only as a threat to the countries who would help and support Ukraine but a warning to the west about what could come next.
