Villarreal vs Liverpool LIVE - team news and match updates (Liverpool Echo)

ive score updates, team news and commentary stream as Liverpool face Villarreal in the Champions League.

Emery's game plan will have to change tonight, which is likely to provide greater space for Liverpool on the counter-attack. Throughout the 90 minutes at Anfield last week, the 'Yellow Submarines' failed to register a single shot on target. It’s a small ground here at Villarreal and the interest from the media is large. But with no away goals rule, dreadful conditions and the knowledge anything can happen in these games, it’s not going to be straightforward for Klopp’s side. A 2-0 lead from the first leg at Anfield last week against a team they are much stronger than should, in theory, means this is less stressful for those supporters tonight. If Jurgen Klopp’s side are professional and disciplined here tonight then it is very hard to look another final appearance for Liverpool in my view. Liverpool at the moment, I don’t see anything but a win for them." We knew it was going to be tough last week against Villarreal. The atmosphere was incredible. Might be a good idea given the weather is deteriorating again here. Their victories have been achieved by sitting in deep, defending well, being prudent in possession and counter-attacking with speed, but it’s the home side who need to force the issue tonight. Unai Emery is attempting to secure Villarreal’s first Champions League win over English opposition at the 14th attempt tonight. They are 2-0 down so we expect them to give it a go.

Villarreal v Liverpool: Champions League semi-final, second leg – live! (The Guardian)

Minute-by-minute report: Can Liverpool defend their first-leg lead and reach the final for the third time in five years? Find out with Rob Smyth.

24 min Salah shoots just wide from 15 yards after a bit of a scramble in the area, though the referee had blown for something or other. 34 min This has been Liverpool’s worst performance in a while - certainly since the first half at the Etihad and probably a lot longer than that. Villarreal need to make the most of their dominance. 26 min The pitch is playing well enough despite all the rain. Normally that would be a bad thing for Liverpool, but at the moment it suits them. 56 min A corner is half cleared to Thiago, who shoots straight at Rulli from the edge of the area. Also, Thiago is the guy you want when you’re in the ascendancy but can he dig you out of a hole?” Both men ended up in a heap, and on first viewing it looked a really tight call, but replays showed it was a clean bit of keeping from Alisson. If anything, Lo Celso fouled him. They have been outplayed, outsmarted and outfought by Villarreal, who are level in the tie thanks to goals from Boulaye Dia and Francis Coquelin. Join us in 15 minutes for the second half. Again it came from a cross, this time by Capoue on the right. It’s interesting that both Everton and Villarreal have targeted Robertson and Alexander-Arnold in recent weeks, with a reasonable amount of success. 57 min Diaz shins a scissor kick over the bar.

Villarreal vs Liverpool live score tracker: Updates, line-ups, team ... (The Athletic)

Hello, and welcome to The Athletic's coverage of tonight's Champions League semi-final second leg between Villarreal and Liverpool.

Klopp has made five changes to the team that narrowly beat Newcastle in Saturday's early kick-off. Those in yellow are preparing for arguably the biggest night in their club's history this evening. Torrential rain earlier today looked as though it would affect the game but the groundsmen at El Madrigal have worked their magic. Meanwhile, their opponents have to deal with all the pressure, could that be a deciding factor? You could certainly tell that Villarreal were missing their main talisman in the first leg and Emery will be relieved that Moreno has been passed fit to start. Liverpool fans will not need reminding but the Reds have not won a European semi-final away leg since 1985. Unsurprisingly, Alexander-Arnold is back in his natural habitat tonight: on the right-hand side of the Liverpool defence. Regardless of the success in the next few weeks, Klopp signalled his intent to continue his progress on Merseyside by agreeing a new contract last week. The other former Premier League stars to watch out for in the hosts' squad include Foyth, Lo Celso, Capoue, Coquelin and Iborra. El Madrigal is bouncing and those fans in yellow have never had better reason to celebrate! Villarreal are all over their English opponents at every opportunity, it will be interesting to see whether they can maintain the intensity. Liverpool will eventually find their rhythm but they need to find it quickly or the tie could soon be level.

Liverpool had trailed for a total of 69 minutes in matches since the turn of the year. Liverpool pushed to confirm their superiority and it felt like a trick of the mind that things had been so different in the first half. They had dreamed of scoring the first goal. He was beaten when Fabinho lashed in a shot from an angle, the ball seeming to go through him, which was a hammer blow for him and his team. They scored through Boulaye Dia and Francis Coquelin and the crazy thing was that the team that sits seventh in La Liga, the one with little experience of these kind of nights, could have had more. It was a night when their class told, specifically the control and composure that has seen them sweep all before them since the turn of the year, raising the prospect of an unprecedented quadruple.

Having barely offered a presence when he was actually in his goal, Rulli then went for the natural follow-up to that by just vacating it. The second half was all red, and soon left no doubt. Alisson came for it and got the ball but also the man. Fabinho got the goal that ultimately blew away all of the remaining anxiety. Capoue this time crossed from the right, and Francis Coquelin soared above Alexander-Arnold to plunder a brilliant header. It was like they were completely caught cold, and were almost caught again in the same way moments later. Andy Robertson didn’t seem to know much about it as his back blocked it, and the manner Naby Keita hacked the ball away spoke to the anxiety that was running through the team. On a night of such reversals, it was like Klopp’s players just couldn’t handle the intensity of the home side. They immediately went one better, to bring it level. Pervis Estupinan found so much free space there in the third minute, but still had to play the right pass. Villarreal just went for it and didn’t let up for the rest of the half. They had put so much into the first.

If Liverpool could afford an off-day in this final month of the season, it was tonight, but Klopp will not want a repeat performance with just six games ...

His success at Liverpool was founded upon a principle of meritocracy and you get what you put in. It’s hard to know how much to credit Liverpool for their response, given that they were simply restoring the natural order of things. If he learns one thing from Tuesday evening, it is not to try and beat Sadio Mane in a foot race. It’s one thing to lose a header at the back post, another entirely to fail to spot the run and so not even jump for it. If it meant that they were laboured in the second half and so inevitably fell towards their own goal, it’s hard to criticise that either. They pressed Liverpool high up the pitch, fought in central midfield with ten times as much energy as they did at Anfield and were grisly and resolute at the back.

Liverpool shirt sponsor latest after 'world record' deal and ... (Liverpool Echo)

The Reds' current deal with financial services firm Standard Chartered, who have been Liverpool's main shirt partner for the past 12 years, expires at the end ...

There will be plenty of options for Liverpool, and they will likely finally blow Manchester United out of the water when it comes to the power of their main sponsorship, a title that United have long held in the Premier League. But it depends who are the major players at the table and how keen they are to make sure that they are the ones who have one of football's most sought after sponsorship spaces. The rise from 2009 to 2015 was one of £10m per season from Standard Chartered. The rise from 2018 was another £10m. Of the major sponsorship deals that have been concluded during the pandemic and as the world moves out of it, Manchester United's £47m per year deal with TeamViewer replaced the Chevrolet in a deal that was worth around £17m less, although freed United up to secure a deal with a new automotive partner, a lucrative commercial venture for Premier League clubs. Mail Online reported at the weekend that the Reds and Standard Chartered were in talks over a deal that would potentially double what is paid to the club now, taking it to what would be a world record breaking £80m per season. If you were to apply the same rise in percentage to a Liverpool deal then you would be looking at £94m per season. Their appeal has only grown since then and as the club chase what would be an unprecedented quadruple there are few sporting teams globally that would have a better hand when arriving at the negotiating table.

I can’t remember Liverpool looking rattled like that in recent times. To come out and play the way they did in the second half - they are deservedly in the final. Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen on BT Sport: "Liverpool earned that. "It is always nice to get the job done on Tuesday, We can watch the game tomorrow knowing we will be there. "We expected it but sometimes you can't control the game how you want to. The players will think if they finish second in the Premier League and get pipped in the Champions League final this season will be a disappointment. This is a different Liverpool to recent years because they have that strength in depth, the ability to make changes. There would have been big disappointment in the Liverpool dressing room at half-time. They play a high line so with the speed we have we need to mix it up. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, speaking to BT Sport: "It is great to be in the final. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: "It is outstanding. Sonic the Hedgehog rescues Liverpool and ruins Villarreal's big night (The Guardian)

Villarreal's fans were starting to dream of Paris but the introduction of Luis Díaz in the second half changed the Champions League semi-final second leg.

In a flash, a click of the fingers, it was gone. As it turned out, no, they couldn’t but for a moment they had really thought they would. They had come a long way. That was the good news for Villarreal. The bad news was that they had done so much so fast that, like Liverpool, they had a decision to make. There was also, it may be as cruel to mention as it would be unrealistic not to, the goalkeeper that stood behind them. Level now, they had something to lose, something to hold. Oh, they had suffered, that was for sure, and they had reacted too. Francis Coquelin, supposedly a defensive midfielder, was dashing behind the full-backs. Only, much as Liverpool were two goals down for the first time, they weren’t defeated yet and, as Unai Emery had warned, this is a side that can hurt you a thousand ways. Villarreal overran Liverpool, the intensity that had inhibited them before matched now. A second followed after 41, that quiet blown away, belief flooding through them, the noise making this a special night, even ultimately in defeat. It had all seemed so unlikely.

This is what the game is all about. It may yet mean we have a fourth all-English final, and the third in four years. It is remarkable to think that, in that first final in 2018, Sadio Mane seemed more of a support act. The German had been asked how this compares to reaching this stage in 2018 and 2019. This is what people dream about. After defeating Villarreal 5-2 on aggregate, the German ensured this was three Champions League finals in five years, to make it 10 in total.

Problem-solver Klopp presses reset to propel Liverpool into another ... (The Guardian)

Villarreal dominated half of the Champions League semi-final second leg but Reds found their way to make it to Paris showpiece.

“To be fair, it was calm,” Andy Robertson, the left-back, said of the dressing-room mood at half-time. The difference was what I was talking [to the players about] at half-time – that we started to do what we wanted to do in the first place. Liverpool simply reset mentally and trusted that the victory would be theirs when – and not if – they played as they wanted to play, moved as they wanted to move. It was not a classic Klopp comeback to rival those against Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and Barcelona three years later because Liverpool were not actually behind in the tie. “We had 11 problems in the first half,” Klopp added, referring to each one of his players. “The whole world thought the game was more 3-0 than 2-1,” Klopp said, going on to reveal that he wanted to show his players a clip at half-time of a positive moment to give them a lift.

You won't know Lisa, but she is very important for us, it's about Danielle, it's about so many people. Liverpool reached the final thanks to a 3-2 win on the night (5-2 on aggregate) with goals from Fabinho, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane. The banner reads ‘Ulla Klopp, Scouse Queen’, in reference to the Reds manager’s wife.

The real pleasing bit is when we had our tough times, we spoke after a few losses earlier in the season, we kept working hard and we kept believing in what we were doing and the second half of the season has shown that.” We entered the competition to try and get the experiences we’ve had so far,” he said. “We know the place that we’re in. His next European Cup winners medal was put around his neck in the colours of Bayern Munich, who overcame Paris Saint-Germain 1-0 in the 2020 final. He collected his third Champions League medal in 2003 after Milan beat Juventus in a penalty shoot-out, even though he missed from the spot. Midfielder Thiago Alcantara is one of the most decorated players in European football, having won countless titles with both Barcelona and Bayern Munich, but a Champions League victory in the French capital will elevate him to an ultra-exclusive club.
