Nottingham Forest's 'only concern' heading into titanic promotion ... (Nottinghamshire Live)

The latest Nottingham Forest news ahead of the Reds' massive Championship meeting with the Cherries.

For a team who are built on energy, pressing in the middle of the pitch, pace up top - it's not a bad watch. They're really, really entertaining to watch for a team that gives up a lot of the ball. There was a big gulf between the two sides and the victory could have been more handsome. A win on Tuesday night would put them in the driving seat for second place heading into the final weekend of the campaign. You can tell they are loaded with attacking talent when Kieffer Moore is merely a backup option to free-scoring Dominic Solanke. In the past year alone they have brought in Ryan Christie, Jamal Lowe, Siriki Dembele, Emiliano Marcondes, and Todd Cantwell, too. That ruled him out of the remainder of the season, although a return for the play-offs, if needed, is still possible.

If the East Midlands side win their last two games, they are up. That would put them second on goal difference going into their final game of the season. However, with two play-off failures behind him and an appalling record against their fellow top six sides, you can't help thinking that for this story to have a happy ending, Forest need to beat Bournemouth.

It would be easy to sit on the fence and call this game a draw, but the most interesting option is if Forest do bring it to the final day with both sides level on points. Bournemouth haven’t lost a game since the start of April and they have also shown in recent weeks they have the ability to come back from behind and make sure they don’t leave a game empty-handed. This is a really hard one to call since it’s a game that means so much for both sides and could be the difference between automatic promotion and the play-offs.

Latest Nottingham Forest news from NottinghamshireLive as Reds fall 1-0 to Cherries at Vitality Stadium.

Rating: 6/10 Too many long balls didn’t help the visitors’ cause, though, and second half was just not Forest. Rating: 5/10 Sam Surridge: A case of ‘what if’. That chance which hit the bar, and then the offside/penalty decision which didn’t go his way. Bright before the break but didn’t see much of the ball in the second half. Philip Zinckernagel: At the heart of plenty of positive play in the first half, with tremendous work-rate. Kept going right to the end, including going for goal late on, only to fall foul of the offside flag. Eventually made way as the Reds tried a last throw of the dice in response to going behind. Will need his leadership to come to the fore as Forest pick themselves up for the play-offs. Brice Samba: Kept the Reds in it for a long spell when they were under the cosh. Dominic Solanke fired into the side-netting soon after the re-start as Bournemouth began to see more of the ball. They went on to have the better chances in the first half. But Kieffer Moore’s second half goal clinched victory for the Cherries.

Bournemouth ended Forest's automatic promotion hopes via a Kieffer Moore strike.

Solanke shaped to shoot but instead rolled his pass to the unmarked Moore, who calmly side-footed a famous finish past Travers. Cue delirium inside Dean Court and, following a two year absence, little Bournemouth are back in the big time. Their need to win was greater but, as the minutes ticked down, it was all they could do to simply avert defeat and take this automatic promotion race to Saturday. He appeared to have evaded the offside trap before going down under a challenge from Travers but the flag went up and Bournemouth survived what would have been a convincing penalty appeal. First Philip Billing shot tamely at Samba after bustling his way into the penalty area and then Jadon Anthony also tested the Forest goalkeeper. Needing to beat Nottingham Forest here to secure the second automatic promotion place alongside Fulham, there was never even the slightest sense of Bournemouth playing to protect their position ahead of Saturday’s final round of Championship matches. A first-half collision with Nat Phillips would leave Cook nursing a very visibly bloody head injury for most of the match.

Latest Nottingham Forest news from NottinghamshireLive as Reds beaten by Cherries in race for second spot.

That had a massive bearing on the outcome of the game. Tuesday night was a ‘free hit’. Nobody had Forest down to be in that position. Most importantly, the Reds will need to get this match out of their system. Towards the end, they started to look drained. Now is the time for calm and perspective. If they are to do that, they need to clear minds. By that point, the Cherries had something to cling on to. A fair few of the calls were questionable. The Reds weren’t even supposed to be in this position, giving Bournemouth a run for their money with two games to go. The officials’ apologies will have counted for little. Still, it took a set-piece for them to find a way through. They had forged some decent openings, including hitting the bar through Sam Surridge, and played some nice football.

Nottingham Forest's path to promotion will take them through the play-offs following defeat to Bournemouth on Tuesday evening.

Huddersfield Town would take on Sheffield United in the other semi-final. Millwall are outsiders to finish in the top six and need a lot of things to go their way. The Blades, who are fifth on 72 points, are the bookmakers' current favourites to join Forest and Huddersfield in the play-offs. A draw will only be enough if one of Boro or the Blades lose, while a defeat opens the door Millwall. They are second favourites to reach the play-offs with bookmakers. Luton are also on 72 points, but their 7-0 drubbing at the hands of Fulham on Monday has left their goal difference the worst of the lot. Both of those teams will occupy third and fourth place in the standings whatever happens on Saturday.
