Is your local post office affected? The strike urges the Post Office to “thrash out” a settlement that “shows respect for Britain’s key workers who kept Post Offices open for society during the pandemic.” Although, a Post Office spokesperson said: "We have been notified by the CWU that they have instructed their members to take strike action on Tuesday, May 3. The CWU said that Post Office managers had been insisting on a pay freeze for 2021-22 "despite the company generating a profit for the last two years during the pandemic from the efforts of their key worker employees".

Post Office workers are going on a one-day strike today over a pay dispute.

Explaining how this 2% pay rise has made post office workers feel, Andy said: "Post Office management need to understand that by undervaluing these workers, they have provoked real anger across the country." "We urge them to get round the table with us and reach a decent, fair agreement that shows respect for Britain's key workers who kept post offices open for society during the pandemic." A Post Office spokesperson has said however: "We have been notified by the CWU that they have instructed their members to take strike action on Tuesday May 3. "The current offer of a mere 2% pay rise over two years is nothing short of an insult to these key workers who provided exemplary services to this nation during the pandemic. CWU official Andy Furey said: "Despite this union's best attempts to avoid strike action, the Post Office has displayed no interest whatsoever in meaningful negotiations. "Post Office can’t put their heads in the sand. The union also noted that Post Office Postal Assistants – a significant sector of the workforce – currently earn less than £24,000 per year, and have argued that if management was to strictly follow government policy, these workers would have received a wage increase of at least £250, yet they have not. CWU Assistant Secretary Andy Furey said: "Post Office management are insisting they are simply following government policy on public sector pay policy. The union – which represents Post Office staff – has said workers "won’t accept a collapse in their living standards", as hundreds of employees took strike action today. Mutley Post Office is just one of those which has been closed and staff are protesting outside the venue to highlight the issue. Postal workers in the Post Office and Royal Mail can overcome this by establishing rank-and-file committees, democratic organisations of workers’ struggle, to wage a fight for a genuine pay increase and against corporate “restructuring”. It consists of just a 2 percent basic increase, with a further 1.5 percent based on the introduction of compulsory Sunday working to compete with Amazon and DPD and the following concessions: the scrapping of 32 allowances and supplements, reduction in sick pay and all new recruits to be placed on inferior pay and conditions. The union is currently stalling a strike ballot of 115,000 Royal Mail workers over this years’ pay deal, scheduled for talks with management this week. Across the country, wildcat strike action became the only means through which postal workers could demand a safe workplace as outbreaks of COVID infections and in some cases deaths were reported. Furey has stressed that the Post Office, unlike NHS and council employers, is not bound by public sector pay “restraint”, rather than link the postal workers’ fight to the necessary struggle against the wider austerity policy of the Johnson government. The CWU first attempted to stymie opposition and then to isolate the dispute.
