From warp drives to lightsabers to deadly battle droids, here are 7 futuristic Star Wars technologies that scientists are working on in real life.
In 1994, physicist Miguel Alcubierre published a paper showing how warp drive could be physically possible, by using equal amounts of positive and negative energy to simultaneously compress the space in front of a spaceship while expanding the space behind it. In June 2021, an auction winner paid $28 million to join the inaugural flight of Blue Origin, a commercial space travel company founded by Amazon's Jeff Bezos. The lucky winner’s son joined Bezos and his brother on a 10-minute trip to space — reaching a maximum altitude of about 62 miles (100 kilometers) above Earth (technically, past the point where Earth's atmosphere ends and space begins). That's an expensive 10 minutes — but some experts have predicted that the cost of commercial space travel could drop to about $100,000 per person in the coming decade. In our world, commercial space travel costs a bit more — and you don't even get to leave the solar system. However, creative inventors — like those behind the YouTube channel Hacksmith — have come up with some clever (and deadly) laser swords that come pretty close to the preferred weapon of the Jedi. In 2018, Hacksmith created the world's first retractable, plasma-based energy sword, with a 4,000-degree Fahrenheit (2,200 degrees Celsius) blade capable of cutting through solid titanium. Depending on how well your lightsaber works, you may soon need the assistance of a bionic arm, like the one Luke receives at the end of "Empire." Here's a piece of technology that's not just science fiction anymore. U.S. tech firm Boston Dynamics demonstrates this with two now-infamous robots: Atlas — a terrifyingly agile bipedal droid that can sprint, backflip and do parkour — and the robo-dog Spot — an autonomous, four-legged robot that has already found work in hospital wards, on farms and with the NYPD. These bots aren't designed specifically for combat, — but we'd hate to run into either of them in a dark alley at night.

The earliest use of this play on words dates back to 1978, one year after the release of 'A New Hope', where American newspapers cleverly used the phrase in the headlines on Independence Day on the 4th July. The reoccurrence of this phrase in the movies gave way to the saying, 'May the 4th be with you'. As most fans know, the fourth day in May become known as Star Wars Day because of the play on words it has with the phrase, 'May the force be with you,' used by Jedi Masters throughout the franchise.

Kylo Ren hesitates to fire on the lead Resistance ship after sensing his mother Leia’s presence on board, but his wingmen destroy the bridge, killing most of the Resistance’s leaders. But the Skywalker legacy casts a long shadow, the currents of the dark side run deep, and Darth Vader’s blood runs in Ben’s veins. Star Wars: Thrawn is a comic book adapting a novel of the same name. Disguised as the bounty hunter Boushh, Princess Leia infiltrates the palace under the pretence of collecting the bounty on Chewbacca and unfreezes Han, but is caught and enslaved. As the others rendezvous with the Rebel Alliance, Luke returns to Dagobah to complete his Jedi training with Yoda, whom he discovers is dying. But after a string of bad luck and near escapes, Doctor Aphra is back on the job. Guided by the disembodied voice of Obi-Wan’s spirit, Luke uses the Force to aim his torpedoes into the exhaust port, destroying the Death Star moments before it fires on the Rebel base. Fifteen years later, cargo pilot Bodhi Rook defects from the Empire, taking a holographic message recorded by Galen to Gerrera on the desert moon Jedha. Rebel Alliance intelligence officer Cassian Andor learns of Rook’s defection and the Death Star from an informant. Research scientist Galen Erso and his family are hiding on the planet Lah’mu when Imperial weapons developer Orson Krennic arrives to press him into completing the Death Star, a space station-based superweapon capable of destroying entire planets. There are some corners of the galaxy so dark and desperate that even Vader can be a knight in shining armour. However, as much as I love all things Star Wars, it is easy to feel entirely overwhelmed by the sheer number of things that exist in the universe. Today is May the 4th, a single day a year where it’s not only okay to shout about your love for all things Star Wars but encouraged.

To celebrate Star Wars day The Mancunion's Joe McFadden details what makes Star Wars: The Clone Wars so personal to him.
But one thing that we will always have is Star Wars: The Clone Wars and those magical moments spent a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away. However, most importantly, it was something I shared with my brother, and that is why I will always be grateful for this show. For me, this is why Star Wars: The Clone Wars was the most important show of my childhood. The Clone Wars was such a huge part of our childhood that when it ended 6 weeks after we turned 18 it only felt appropriate that our childhood should end with it. On May 4th 2020, The Clone Wars aired its series finale ‘Victory and Death’, the epic conclusion not just to the thrilling ‘Siege of Mandalore’ arc, or the show itself, but to our childhoods. Now, some of you may be reading this and think he’s dead but I assure you that is not the case. Now, if you are not a Star Wars fan this will mean nothing to you but back in 2008 exploring this relatively new era of Star Wars in a mainstream TV show was a very exciting prospect. It opened my eyes to the magic of Star Wars, a franchise that has had such a defining effect on my life, and most importantly, formed the centrepiece of mine and my brother’s relationship for much of our later childhood. Time and again, The Clone Wars refused to pull its punches and was all the better for it. Instead, I discovered it on my own – or rather fittingly, with my brother – and that is why I think The Clone Wars had such an effect on my formative years. The Clone Wars wasn’t a show that talked down to its audience, but instead taught them and encouraged them to grow up with it. Following its August 2008 film debut, Star Wars: The Clone Wars premiered on the small screen on October 3rd of that year.
