"He was training with us in the week and showed some good moves. But would you be happy with this lineup? But how will he line Saints up? To make it even worse, they score from a transition after five minutes where we actually started well second half - that's more or less done deal." Both sides have 40 points from 35 games and still harbour hopes of a top half finish, although defeat for either club would leave them looking over their shoulders at the sides battling to avoid relegation. "It was not like we had 10 big chances, but they were ruthless. Adam Armstrong can't turn it in as Pontus Jansson makes a vital challenge. For me, it is good to give him a chance to be around the team, to get a feeling for the atmosphere in a Premier League game, and this is good for him." He has scored just twice in 26 appearances for Southampton and has found his opportunities limited in recent weeks, with just one start in the Premier League in 2022 so far. Saints were nearly gifted one back at the start of the second-half. A number of half-chances came and went as the half wore on. And that was a sign of things to come, as the Saints capitulation began inside 15 minutes. Up the other end, Mathias Jensen almost turned in an open-goal but the ball across to him was behind. A Armstrong thought he had scored a first goal since November to reduce the deficit when he powered across Raya from Diallo’s interception, but he was beyond the defensive line and the linesman’s flag went up. Saints – although a calamity at the back, and never looking sure of any defending – were able to attack with confidence and inspire the travelling support.

Southampton have a habit of spiralling out of control and right now it looks like they’ll have to get something from one of their final two games of the season at home against Liverpool and away at Leicester. A corner to the back post was kept alive by Ivan Toney and he crossed for Jansson to tap home. Eriksen’s short-term Brentford contract is up at the end of the season and there is talk of Tottenham, and others, trying to bring him in. He is thriving in this Brentford side and it now depends on what he wants to achieve in the final few years of his career. 2. Eriksen’s quality the key for Bees: The Danish playmaker is back to his very best as he grabbed another assist and showed off his incredible range of passing. Ralph Hasenhuttl hopes that their new owners Sport Republic (led by former Brentford Director of Football Rasmus Ankersen) will allow him to spend more this summer because it is clear Saints will be in a relegation scrap next season without significant investment, while Brentford will likely be pushing for the top 10 at the very least.

The Bees turned the ball over in Southampton territory and Eriksen found Mbeumo on the right. A pass from Toney released Wissa in the left channel and his cross was heading for Jensen unmarked ten yards out before Bednarek intervened. Nørgaard headed a deep corner back, which Southampton had to scramble away, and Toney was just beaten to a ball forward by Forster soon after. He strode to the edge of the box and curled a shot out of the reach of Forster and in to the net. Eriksen fired a free kick over the crossbar for The Bees before a lucky ricochet appeared to put Broja through on goal. Broja headed over the crossbar and then saw a shot saved by Raya and The Bees had a lucky escape just before the interval. Adam Armstrong was unable to convert a cross from the left and when the ball came back to James Ward-Prowse, his curling shot was saved by Raya. Broja headed wide and Walker-Peters did likewise as the game continued to be incredibly open. Eriksen delivered it to the far post and Toney volleyed it back across. Broja saw a shot blocked before Raya got down well to hold on to a smashed ball from Stuart Armstrong, after he had burst in to the penalty area on the Southampton right. It beat Forster and Wissa looked set to convert but was unable to get the right contact under pressure and the ball flew over the crossbar. Nørgaard and Christian Eriksen linked well in midfield and Brentford’s attacking trio of Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo, either side of Ivan Toney, began to get on the ball.
