Excitement for what's possible at the Mem today won't just be confined to the blue half of Bristol, or across the UK as Bristol Live spoke to Gasheads from ...
It’s just so much fun to watch Rovers play and the difference from the first match of the season to now is night and day. I work in football retail and lots of the coaches out here are from the UK, so when people come in and ask what team I support, and I - an American - say, ‘Bristol Rovers’, the faces that they make are pretty funny. I try to put some scale on it, linking it with Slovak football, but they are amazed that a team can get crowds of 7,000-10,000 in the fourth tier. It’s been a season of two halves; the first half was pretty dire and it was hard to watch, performances and results weren’t great but, now it’s really enjoyable - we play nice football, pass it around and we dominate teams. When I moved to America you could only watch games in Spanish, so now it’s completely different - you get all the matches. I will be watching the game at home with my partner on iFollow. There is no kind of a routine. When we played Exeter earlier in the season we were 4-0 down and the camera panned to my mum and sister who were leaving the game. The season really has been a season of two halves. I liked the atmosphere, the quartered jerseys, Goodnight Irene and the spirit of the supporters. Before Christmas, my friends in Argentina asked me what was going on with the team and I couldn't find the answers to explain the sad situation we were in. Early Saturday morning, I will share my time with my family, and drink some 'mates' (a traditional South American caffeine drink). I will take a walk in the park to ease the tension and two hours before the match, I will meet friends to go shopping for meat and everything I need to enjoy the game. Being able to enjoy the pictures and videos uploaded by my friends from Bristol makes me feel, despite the distance, very close to the club I love.

Barton was playing the role of manager and balboy, desperately attempting to speed things up whenever and wherever possible. The Rovers striker potted his shot into the far corner and rushed to fish the ball out of the net. Glenn Whelan, who turned 38 in January and played under Barton at Fleetwood, operated at the base of midfield to help police the odd Scunthorpe attack. Anthony Evans drove in on the hour mark and then scored a fine free-kick with 14 minutes of normal time to play. Two minutes later Bristol Rovers had put a seventh goal past an already relegated Scunthorpe to miraculously leapfrog Northampton on goals scored and into the final automatic League Two promotion place. “Please stay off the pitch,” Barton said in a message transmitted over the speakers, before both teams re-emerged about 15 minutes later.

The final game of the League Two season is upon Bristol Rovers and Joey Barton's side remain in contention for automatic promotion.
He is doubtless hoping this will be the last game of his Rovers stint with the Gas getting the job done, and he will want to go out in style if that is the case. The manager hinted he could take an aggressive approach in the immediate aftermath of the Rochdale win, but while Rovers may need a goal rush, they also need cool heads to get the job done on Saturday. Whelan certainly provides that. Rovers' top scorer, certainly, will keep his place in the side as the lone striker. Grant could be in contention to start, as could Nick Anderton and Trevor Clarke. On the left, Barton has options. Anssi Jaakkola will offer backup on the bench.

"We have to change the mentality to work and to want to come in, and the desire and determination. "It’s been ridiculous, that has to change and that is the culture. “We also have to change players controlling what they do and when they do it. The fact of the matter is they’ve done it over 46 games, and we haven’t irrespective of whatever squad of players we have got. “We started the game brightly, conceded an own goal, and then the curve and the momentum of the game changed completely. It was a very difficult game to try and manage, but with the young players we had out it was almost impossible, they were just better than us.

If we’d have had an average home following we wouldn’t have got the job done. I think I can build a proper army here in this city, something that has not been done at least in the North part of the city before. The lads have turned up and they’ve competed and it’s my belief that if you do that over the course of a season, you get what you deserve. "For me it was a case of believing in the group.
