Canelo Alvarez v Dmitri Bivol: Why boxing cannot afford another ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Bivol is Canelo's most challenging adversary since Gennady Golovkin in 2017 which ended in a dispute about judging.

Bivol has all the armoury and ring generalship to push Canelo, who has come up from 154lbs to 175lbs as a world champion in the last nine years on a route to greatness in the sport, into a classic encounter of kinetic chess. Bivol has a long and decorated amateur career behind him - 268 wins, fifteen losses - and an undefeated 19-fight professional career including six years as champion against top level opposition in which the 31-year-old has shown an ease in boxing into the championship rounds, displaying all round skills which has seen him defend the title eight times. The boxer’s country will not be named, either, as the preamble takes place from the MC in the ring. It is sad that wants to shake it up and mix sport and politics.” For this encounter, the three judges are Moretti, who scored the first Canelo-Golovkin fight for the Kazakh, Tim Cheatham and Steve Weisfeld, all very experienced officials. “She’ll still be in the business, but she needs to catch her breath.”

Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol fight prediction, undercard, odds ... (CBSSports.com)

The WBA light heavyweight title is on the line when two champions meet in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

The question will eventually become whether Alvarez can hurt Bivol to the body and get in close enough range to break him down. Bivol has trap fight written all over him for Alvarez and is statistically, according to CompuBox, among the sport's leaders in jabs landed per round and fewest punches landed overall by his opponents. One has to wonder whether this is the fight where Alvarez bites off just a bit more than he can chew against someone so technically proficient. I am 175 pounds and I think I can do everything in the ring if I want and if I believe." If Bivol is willing to try and make Alvarez pay for advancing, this is where the fight will get interesting. "Canelo is the pound-for-pound king now so it's important to me to prove to myself what I can do against the best in the ring. I hope I can do good things in the ring." The Mexican superstar has never been down as a pro and has only been visibly hurt once in a 2010 fight against Jose Miguel Cotto, the older brother of future Alvarez foe Miguel Cotto. Some opponents do it with you when you have to show more and I think Canelo is that fight where I have to show all of Dmitry Bivol. But can he dig in and throw caution to the wind against Alvarez if the fight calls for it? Two wins have followed, with Benavidez positioning himself back at the top of the WBC super middleweight rankings. Benavidez’s promoter Sampson Lewkowicz flew to Mexico City days after Alvarez-Plant, to attend the annual WBC convention where he hoped to enforce his fighter’s mandatory title status. Benavidez regained his old belt with a ninth-round stoppage of Anthony Dirrell in September 2019, only to lose the belt at the scales ahead of an August 2020 tenth-round stoppage of Alexis Angulo. If he doesn’t want to fight me, he’ll have to let go of that belt and let me fight for it. The fight is significant in that Alvarez will eventually have to face the winner if he wants to keep his undisputed championship reign intact. Benavidez (25-0, 22KOs) has entered 2022 with the mission of becoming a three-time WBC super middleweight titlist.

Canelo lands a hook to the body but Bivol answers with a combination. Canelo lands a flush uppercut but Bivol takes it well. Bivol is really letting his hands go and Canelo is responding in kind. Álvarez continues to press the action, but can’t sustain an attack. He’s keeping Canelo at bay with deft footwork, ring intelligence and sheer size, not making the mistakes that Canelo lives to exploit. Bivol continues to stymie Canelo with his size, movement and rhythm. A nice comeback round for Álvarez. He traps Bivol along the ropes and lets his hands go, landing a lot of shots. Bivol is getting outboxed and outfought. Another clear round for Bivol, who is landing the cleaner and harder shots. And you all should believe in yourself to achieve what you want.”

Experts predict who will win Canelo Álvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol (Los Angeles Times)

A wide range of boxing experts explain who they think will the Canelo Álvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol fight Saturday night in Las Vegas.

“I have a bad feeling about this one — and by the bad feeling, I mean bad news for Canelo Álvarez. Dmitry Bivol is the defending champion in the 175-pound division and he is no Sergey Kovalev, the 37-year-old champion Álvarez defeated in 2019. Álvarez has proven he can KO an opponent in 175, and even though he has a good chin, he has not taken a solid punch by someone like Bivol. I think we will see Canelo hurt for the first time in years, but I still see him winning this one by split decision, sparking a start of a new rivalry.” Bivol is strong and has a style that can frustrate Álvarez, especially with the amount of jabs he throws in every round. That’s what he did against Sergey Kovalev. That’s what he did against Billy Joe Saunders. That’s what he did against Caleb Plant. And that’s what he’ll do against Dmitry Bivol. The Russian is a decent fighter with good balance and a solid jab but doesn’t move well enough to be able to avoid Álvarez for 12 rounds. What Bivol does have is a 6-foot frame that will give him a four-plus-inch height advantage and sturdiness to be able to reach the final bell. “Against Canelo Álvarez’s speed and ever-evolving skill, I don’t see any logical path to victory for Dmitry Bivol — or for anybody but a few opponents in the world. “Dmitry Bivol represents Canelo Álvarez’s toughest test since Gennadiy Golovkin — undefeated, in his prime, with the kind of snapping jab and fleet feet that could trouble the pound-for-pound king. I expect the bigger man to box aggressively and he might trouble Canelo with his educated jab and sneaky hook but he’ll also be open to Álvarez’s accurate counter punches. “Dmitry Bivol brings an extensive amateur background and quality victories to this 175-pound title defense, but he’s still inexperienced in comparison to Canelo Álvarez, who’s currently at the top of his game. It won’t be the most compelling fight, but I see Álvarez outworking him and winning a unanimous decision.” But with four fights [by Álvarez] in 12 months that took place from the end of 2020 to the end of 2021, the toll those potentially took on his energy and focus, the jump in weight, the game opponent and everything combined, there seems to be a real chance that this could go sideways for Canelo, too. They see this as a smart foray back into the light-heavyweight division against a fighter who’s in his prime and who potentially presents a significant victory to add to boxing’s most impressive resume.

Dmitry Bivol dominates, upsets Canelo Alvarez; Montana Love wins ... (ESPN)

Dmitri Bivol defended his WBA "super" light heavyweight title with an impressive unanimous decision victory over Canelo Alvarez.

10-9, Bivol. 118-110, Bivol. The 39-year-old from China drilled Alexander with a left hand in the opening round, and referee Robert Hoyle didn't bother to count. Round 1: Bivol was incredibly active with the jab, his best weapon. He rebounded nicely down the stretch with powerful right hand followed by a left hook to the body. He continues to find success at range with the jab, and he's reeling off combos that meet the mark. Finally, in the closing seconds of the frame, Alvarez broke through with a big right uppercut. Round 4: Canelo pressing hard but Bivol catching most of the shots on the gloves. The boxing acumen, footwork and size of Bivol proving to be a formidable challenge. Is the upset in the air? He was able to press Bivol on the ropes and landed a couple of solid body shots as the crowd roared, seemingly trying to cheer him to victory. Bivol looks fresh and continues to use his legs and jab to outbox Canelo. Alvarez running out of time. Round 11: Biggest round of the fight for Bivol, who blasts Alvarez with a bundle of power shots.

Canelo Alvarez loses to Dmitry Bivol as Russian produces masterclass (Mirror.co.uk)

Canelo was attempting to become light-heavyweight champion for a second time while setting up a third fight with long-time rival Gennady Golovkin.

The pound-for-pound No.1 needed a knockout in the final six minutes but resorted to lifting Bivol up and carrying him across the ring as the flight slipped away. Alvarez showed a renewed sense of urgency as the fight entered the final third but continued to find it difficult to pierce Bivol's defensive guard. The fight swung again in the fifth as Bivol started slowly but came on strong to pin Alvarez against the ropes. Alvarez began to find space to land his power shots as he edged the second session. Bivol continued his disciplined approach as he refused to be drawn into a fire-fight. Bivol made the faster start and looked to land his jab with an unerring accuracy.

Dmitry Bivol humbles Canelo Álvarez in shocker to retain light ... (The Guardian)

Dmitry Bivol won a unanimous decision over Canelo Álvarez to retain the WBA light heavyweight title in a major upset on Saturday night.

Most queries concerned the apparent greatness of Álvarez and Bivol only became uncomfortable when he was asked to comment on his status as a Russian against the backdrop of Vladimir Putin’s decision to invade Ukraine with unfettered brutality. Bivol said that he felt Canelo’s power from the first round, pointing to his arms, which blocked so many of the Mexican’s power shots. He was happy for most of the attention to swamp Álvarez and, stoically and patiently, Bivol answered the few questions that were put to him. When I asked Bivol a few days ago if he was concerned about the odds being stacked against him, he simply smiled. It was notable as early as the second round that Bivol used his strength to push Álvarez back so that enough distance would emerge for him to clip the smaller challenger with his crisp punching. Although the judges still had the official scores ridiculously close, it looked as if Álvarez knew that he had little left. In 2017, when most reasonable and fair-minded observers believed that Gennady Golovkin had beaten him at this very same arena, Álvarez was saved by a dubious draw. It was clear that Álvarez was in trouble and fatigue began to spread across his reddened face. Álvarez looked so desperate and frustrated in the penultimate round that, rather than searching for the knockout blow he appeared to need, he lifted Bivol off his feet and carried him briefly on his back. Bivol, the champion, was made to walk first to the ring as the first echoing chants of ‘Can-el-o…Can-el-o…Can-el-o’ reverberated. He snaked out his fast jab and uncorked slick combinations which set the pattern of the fight. Dmitry Bivol shocked Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez, his devastated army of fans, all of Mexico and boxing itself when he retained his WBA light heavyweight title with a consummate victory on points in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Dmitry Bivol stuns Canelo Alvarez on points to retain WBA light ... (The Independent)

Alvarez suffered just the second defeat of his professional career with all three judges ruling the bout 115-113 in Bivol's favour in Las Vegas.

There was a chink of light in the ninth as Bivol briefly tired, allowing Canelo to finally hold his feet and rip thudding hooks, but the Russian’s defence refused to shatter under the weight of the punches. To his credit, Canelo offered no complaints or excuses about the verdict and took his first defeat since facing Floyd Myweather Jr back in 2014 with good grace. He landed 152 punches to Canelo’s 84 throughout the fight, over four times as many jabs, and it was hard to make a case that Canelo won more than four rounds. But there was no weakness for Canelo to seize on this time. “You need to give respect,” Canelo said in the ring afterwards. It was never that Bivol was simply happy to sidestep danger either.

Canelo Alvarez handed boxing lesson by Dmitry Bivol to set up ... (The Independent)

The Mexican superstar was flat throughout the 12 rounds, with the WBA light heavyweight champion delivering a polished performance to defend his belt.

He has won world titles at four weights, regularly receives $35m for fights, beaten the very best and on Saturday night he met a man who refused to be part of the Canelo story. What a sequence: Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte, Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano and now Canelo is toppled in Las Vegas by Bivol in a fight to restore faith in a city where men are too often broken in the boxing ring. His career started in the saw-dust pits of Mexican boxing when he was just a kid of fifteen; a kid fighting for pesos in 2005 and now he rules the business. Canelo fought like a man who had been told to be patient and that victory would be his in the later rounds or courtesy of the judges. Bivol looked to have won eight of the twelve rounds and perhaps a couple more. However, beyond the tiny celebration that the right man did get the decision, there remains the fact that had Bivol not won the last round, he would have finished the fight with a draw – that would have been a heist. There were a lot of close rounds, rounds when Bivol’s jab could be ignored and the few body punches or wide hooks from Canelo, caught the eye of the three judges at ringside. Canelo was marked, grazed and flat at the end. Canelo has been behind in big fights before and done enough in the later rounds or found the punches to finish the fight. Sure, Canelo mixed his attacks, went for the arms, the chest, but Bivol never rushed his work. Bivol was too big and smart and Canelo knew it. It was a flawless display from the Kyrgyzstan-born Russian.

Dmitry Bivol Delivers Stunning Performance in Upset Win Over ... (Sports Illustrated)

The Russian light heavyweight champion retained his title with a shocking victory by unanimous decision over the heavy favorite.

But make no mistake: Bivol is the real deal. Yet all week Bivol expressed confidence—a quiet confidence that he had the skill set to beat Canelo. And he did. A quiet storyline coming into this fight was Álvarez’s decision to switch to a mainly vegan diet. But is it the right decision? But there’s a lot to unpack from Canelo’s performance. Not since his first fight with Gennadiy Golovkin has Álvarez been backed up as often as he was against Bivol. When Álvarez came forward, Bivol kept his guard up.

Did ambition get the best of Canelo Alvarez? (ESPN.co.uk)

Canelo Alvarez met his limit against Dmitry Bivol, but the future -- at 168 pounds -- could still be bright for Alvarez.

"I always like to learn from things," Alvarez said. At the moment, it's difficult to see what adjustments Alvarez can make to turn the tables, but perhaps the long odds will push him to new heights -- and even further outside that comfort zone. For the first time in his career, Alvarez will attempt to exact revenge. No, Alvarez didn't lose to Golovkin, but many fans believed he did after their first meeting in September 2017 for the unified middleweight championship was deemed a draw. "I'm looking for challenges that take me out of my comfort zone." All along, Alvarez said his best weight is 168 pounds, where he remains the undisputed super middleweight champion.

Canelo next fight: Alvarez wants rematch vs Bivol after shock defeat ... (iNews)

Canelo insists he is 'proud' of stepping up to 175lbs despite ultimately coming unstuck against the muscle of Bivol.

The relatively green 23-year-old who lost to “Money” is no more, not only physically but in the way the Mexican’s profile has rocketed. “This doesn’t end in this way, I’m a very competitive person, I’ve got many years ahead of me and I’m gonna come back stronger,” Canelo said. The WBA will not be adding to that haul, however, with Bivol retaining his title on Saturday night amid controversy over whether the Russian should have been allowed to fight at all.
