The game petered out into a little bit of a stalemate from then onwards. It didn't take long before Cody Drameh found some space on the right and he fizzed in a lovely ball to Eli King, who still had a lot to do. Perry Ng fouls Ebosele, just outside the box but on the angle. Liam Thompson registered the first real chance of the match when he sent a bending effort low to Dillon Phillips' left, forcing the goalkeeper to leap and tip it away from danger.

Rams End Season With Defeat Against Cardiff City (Derby County Football Club)

Derby County ended their 2021/22 Sky Bet Championship campaign with a 1-0 defeat against Cardiff City at Pride Park Stadium.

Rooney’s third and final change came with 20 minutes remaining as goalkeeper Ryan Allsop was replaced by Kelle Roos but the Rams were struggling to create a chance to get back into the game. But, ten minutes into the second half, the Rams fell behind as striker Hugill gave Cardiff City the lead. He picked up the ball 25 yards from goal, and with little options around him, he curled towards goal but Phillips made a good diving save to his left to tip his effort wide.

Wayne Rooney issues request to Derby County supporters ahead of ... (Football League World)

Derby County have exceeded all expectations to pick up 55 points from 45 games heading into their final encounter of the season this afternoon.

“So it is important the fans stay in the stands and allow us to show our appreciation because we really do want to show them how much they have meant to us this season.” “The players and the staff at the end of the game want to show our appreciation to the fans and walk round the pitch to show our thanks to what they have brought to us all season. The Rams would be 14 points clear of the bottom three heading into the last game if it was not for the 21 points they have had deducted, and it looks likely that Rooney will stay put to fight for promotion next season, if their off-pitch situation takes care of itself.

Derby County 0-1 Cardiff City: Hugill goal frustrates Rams (VAVEL.com)

The Rams were defeated on the final day of the season in a campaign that has finished in relegation despite an admirable fight throughout.

The fierce opening to the game on the pitch was overshadowed by the deafening noise from the home fans, who were in full party atmosphere for their final game in the Championship. Wayne Rooney’s men spurned numerous chances in the game and were left frustrated by the Bluebirds in their final game in the Championship.

I picked a team that allowed us to make changes and positive changes to win the game when needed. We knew we wouldn't have a lot of the ball, they are a really good team and, very much like the game we had at our place, we set up the same way. He's put a lot of time and effort into trying to acquire the club and the stadium is the last piece, everything else is done. Phillips kept his side on level terms with two saves in the space of a minute as Derby pressed for the goal their control merited. It would be such a shame and a loss to football if it doesn't."
