BLOGGING THE VIEW: 7 ways Mother's Day is celebrated around ... (Zululand Observer)

Breakfast in bed, freshly picked flowers, and a day of pampering are just some of the ways South Africans will celebrate their moms and mother figures on Sunday ...

Just as the empress was strongly connected to Mother’s Day celebrations in Japan, so the revered Queen Sirikit – the Mother of the Nation – came to represent the importance of this day in Thailand. Her birthday, 12 August, is the annual Mother’s Day celebration, accompanied by ceremonies and parades. Although Mother’s Day celebrations are also a fairly new occurrence in India, the country also reveres the female role model of the family. This was declared a national holiday in 1927, with children putting on a performance and presenting their mothers with cake. For Bulgaria, Chile, Croatia, Romania, Cameroon, Bosnia, and Herzegovina, Mother’s Day is celebrated simultaneously with the country’s Women’s Day celebrations. As in South Africa, moms are spoilt with brunch and a day with their loving children, but it’s also a day for remembering those who’ve passed on. Celebrated as Dia de la Madre on the second Sunday in May, this Peruvian holiday includes a series of large meals and performances in honour of the mothers in the community.

COMMENTARY: The completely free, last-minute gift every mom ... (Globalnews.ca)

Flowers, jewelry and brunch all make great Mother's Day gifts, but this idea is what mom actually wants.

Promise her some alone time down the road, on a day and time of her choosing. The flexibility and something to look forward to will be appreciated. Don’t let her lift a finger for the day. So don’t feel guilty or bad for asking for what you want. Every time a mom friend talks about what they really want for Mother’s Day, some type of break sits at the top of the list. Another top-notch idea is clearing mom’s plate of any decisions for the day. Offer to do whatever it is that she usually takes care of, be it grocery shopping, laundry, or cleaning out the kids’ closets. And the best part is, these ideas don’t cost a dime. Pick out the kids’ clothes, come up with the day’s meals, decided the brunch restaurant, etc. As a mom of two young kids, who spends a lot of time chatting with other moms, I know this to be true. According to time2play.com’s Mother’s Day survey, naps were the most sought-after gift. A siesta, a break, a hiatus.

It's a day to celebrate our relationship, our bond, and all of the experiences and memories we've shared together. I've treasured my son and celebrated myself, because for me, the day is about appreciating that I'm a mother to the most incredible kid. I've loved our Mother's Days. Whether playing tag at the park, savouring a treat together on a patio, or enjoying dinner with my mum and grandad, I'm present for the good things, the tender things, the beautiful things. According to Statistics Canada, over 81 per cent of the over one million children in lone-parent families are living with their mothers. Such a narrative is problematic for many, including mothers in heterosexual relationships who don't get treated by their partners. Perhaps Mother's Day focuses more on husbands celebrating wives because motherhood has often been left out of feminist conversations.

Explained: Who was Anna Jarvis and why did she have a love-hate ... (The Indian Express)

We take a look at the history, politics and commerce of Mother's Day, through the story of its founder, Anna Jarvis.

and even attacked First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt for using Mother’s Day to raise funds for charities.” When a proposal was floated to rename Mother’s Day as ‘Parents’ Day’, she opposed it vociferously. The price of carnations would shoot up around Mother’s Day, even though modifications were made to Jarvis’ original idea, with the white flowers now used for deceased mothers and red or pink ones for those alive. Jarvis died, almost penniless and alone, in a sanatorium in 1948. Anna Jarvis’ family version of the holiday was eagerly taken up by the greeting card industry, the flower industry, candy makers, etc., and Mother’s Day was soon heavily commercialised. Historians and feminists have pointed out that Jarvis, through her energetic efforts to get the day recognised, narrowed the definition of ‘mother’ to a caregiver who puts her children’s needs first. Jarvis hated what the day she strove to establish was fast mutating into. Two years before this, she crashed a retail confectioner convention. She now threw her energies in arresting this commercialisation, through written campaigns, litigations, and later, direct action. Notable among these was Julia Ward Howe, author, abolitionist and suffragist, who had started a Mothers’ Day (apostrophe placement important) celebration in June 1873, which continued for some years. Howe’s, and even the elder Mrs Jarvis’, ideas were more political. Sunday being a holiday was likely to make her job easier. She is entitled to it.”

Once I arrived at that place of acceptance of my mother and her failures, the space I knew I needed to provide for my children unfolded before me. With age and maturity, I realized that my mother also parented me through the lens of her own traumas, her own brokenness. Some days I was successful; some days I failed. I wish I could say I’d always been a good mother, but I wasn’t. I loved my children from a place of my own brokenness. My relationship with my own mother is still tense at times, but we’ve moved beyond the wounds of the past. Now, I also know, as their mother, I’m not entitled to recognition or reverence, and maybe not even a phone call, not until they’re ready to make that move. I railed against their social media posts in praise of their fathers and their stepparents. I had my first child at 18, long before I had the necessary knowledge or maturity to be a mother. I thought that the mother-child connections would survive the sometimes tumultuous teenage years, and when the kids became adults, all would be well once again. As a mother, I was often reassured that parenting my six small children — all under the age of 9 — would get easier as they got older. I looked forward to when the chaos of it all would lessen. Long gone are the Mother’s Days that once prompted my children to bring me breakfast in bed hours before my alarm went off.

Mother's Day About Impact, Not Perfection (CalBearsMaven)

I am one of the fortunate ones. God has overblessed me by placing four amazing mothers directly in my path – both my grandmothers, my own mother, and my wife.

They get a meal when they might not have it, someone willing to listen when they need it, and encouragement that anything is possible under the most improbable of circumstances. We pray that the love and influence of other mothers found their way into your child, resulting in a positive impact while you get it together. What I have seen is that even the worst of mothers can have a positive impact. They soon come to realize that the goal isn't perfection and mistakes are nothing to fear. It's not possible, and it's a burden that would be too great to carry. None of them are perfect, and I hope they never tried to be.

Mother's Day is gaslighting (Salon)

We celebrate moms for one day a year while doing everything in our power to keep them down at all other times. By Alison Stine. Published May 8, 2022 7:08AM ...

While many parents worked from home, 71% of fathers reported a " positive outcome" of remote work while only 41% of mothers did, according to a 2021 study, perhaps because mothers were still expected to do it all while working their jobs from home: to cook, clean and be the one whose meetings are interrupted, the one expected to entertain children or keep them on school task. The determination of mothers cannot be overstated, but our reward for getting things done no matter what is fewer jobs and promotions, lower pay and abysmal medical care. We know that women, particularly women of color, are paid less than men, but mothers specifically are punished financially more than fathers, which some experts call the " Motherhood Penalty." Single moms are punished most of all. My name never budged on the childcare waitlist I put my son on when he was a newborn. Motherhood is seen as interfering with work in a way that fatherhood does not, and mothers are treated differently. Last year, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, around 10 million mothers living with children in the U.S. were not actively working jobs, an increase of 1.4 million more than the previous year. COVID set back women's gains in the workforce to the lowest levels since 1988. New mothers are ostracized, isolated with the encompassing reality of caring for a newborn which some moms, like me, must do totally alone, often not by choice. But in the last two years, my longtime partner moved in with my son and me and has become a constant, dependable fixture in my son's life. As historian Katharine Antolini told the BBC "the floral industry, greeting card industry and candy industry deserve some of the credit for the day's promotion." I still hate Mother's Day. And many other mothers I know do too, in large part because it feels like slapping a smiley sticker on a gaping wound. I used to believe my dislike of Mother's Day stemmed from the fact that I was a single mother, my now ex-husband leaving our family shortly after our child was born.
