Courage, confidence, conviction: how Chelsea won a third straight ... (The Guardian)

A relative lack of swagger has characterised Chelsea's latest WSL triumph but there has been an abundance of grit and togetherness among Emma Hayes's squad.

In the Covid‑stunted 2019-20 season they lost none and drew three on the way to a title awarded on a points-per-game basis. And the Blues have had to work harder to grind out results. What felt different this season was the lack of swagger to the title. Chelsea’s record against the club’s main rivals in the five seasons they have won the league has also been remarkably consistent, with Hayes’s side losing just twice, against City in the Spring Series and at Arsenal this season. Instead, in a league of 12 teams and only 22 fixtures, the games between that triumvirate have often been critical to the destination of the trophy. Last season Chelsea lost once and drew three times on the way to 57 points.

Chelsea have retained their Women's Super League (WSL) title again after a superb Sam Kerr-led fightback on an eventful final day of the 2021/22 season.

For Chelsea, domestic treble winners last season, the double remains on this term with an FA Cup final showdown against Manchester City to come at Wembley next weekend. Their miserable season ended on a high note, however, with a 1-0 derby win at Aston Villa. It is their 10th major trophy in total under beloved boss Emma Hayes.

Arsenal Women miss out on WSL title despite victory over West Ham (Telegraph.co.uk)

Champions Chelsea's win over Manchester United made result immaterial with Arsenal finishing the season trophy-less.

But Stina Blackstenius was brought on at the hour-mark and changed things. At the half-time whistle, with the title race poised in Arsenal's hands, Nobbs orchestrated the fans in a rapturous cheer for her side, before she headed into the tunnel. The result was always going to be dictated by Chelsea, considering they went into the final match of the season marginally ahead.

Chelsea retain WSL: How the trophy was won and lost by Arsenal in ... (Sky Sports)

Arsenal midfielder Kim Little told Sky Sports in December: "Straight after the summer and the Olympics, we had a lot of players away but slightly different to ...

Having spent 182 days at the top of the WSL, Arsenal had to again settle for a runners-up spot. "Arsenal were still in it and playing against real top opposition and had to focus on that. I am very proud of the players how they handled the situation. We need to keep believing and up our game next season." That allowed the Blues to fall to that shock defeat at Reading, and even draw with Brighton, while still emerging victorious in the title race. After losing to Arsenal on the opening day of the league season, Chelsea have won 18 of their 21 games since. Chelsea took a little more time to find their feet as the squad looked to gel again after a busy summer, arguably with fatigue and Covid-19 absences playing their part. "When you are in a team environment, you know it spreads like wildfire in the team… It's across the game at the moment. Chelsea went out early, they could focus on the league. Then naturally with that, because there are so many games, we've not performed as well as we would have liked, comparing that to the August, September, October time." We started really well, especially in the WSL, and then going into the Champions League and FA Cup games.
