In a post on social media, Heaton said: "To celebrate my 60th birthday I'd originally intended to do another bicycle tour, visiting and performing at 60 pubs across the UK and Ireland. Instead, singer-songwriter Heaton confirmed he put money, believed to be £60,000 in total, behind the bar of 60 pubs across the UK to celebrate his landmark birthday on Monday, May 9.

Paul Heaton is sure to now enter his sixties as an even bigger local legend than he was before after supplying thousands of free beers to punters up and down the country. "We've had people down from Hull and Market Weighton, and loads of Paul Heaton fans. At that point in the afternoon at least, no-one seemed to have pushed their luck and asked for a glass of champagne or a cocktail. Speaking about the loose set of 'rules', landlord James said: "We've worked out that there is enough money behind the bar to cover about 300 pints. Speaking to customers in there, there was a unanimous feeling of good cheer, with people thanking Paul for his generosity and wishing him a happy 60th birthday. They messaged The Whalebone Facebook page and said Paul Heaton wants to put £1,000 behind the bar for your regulars.

He chose pubs around the country and put a total of £60k behind the collective bar so drinkers could spend 'a little time' and enjoy a pint on him.
