Why is Friday the 13th unlucky? Meaning of the superstition ... (iNews)

The notion that Friday the 13th is somehow an unlucky date has persisted from centuries - thankfully it's only falling once in 2022.

While Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky date in UK and the US, the superstition is by no means universal across the world. Friday 17th rather than 13th is the day of bad luck in Italy, and it’s said that this comes from the number’s Roman numerals (XVII). Some claim the root of the Friday the 13th superstition lies in the story of Jesus’s last supper and crucifixion. Henry Sutherland Edwards’ 1869 biography of Italian composer Gioachino Rossini, who died on Friday 13th November, states that Rossini regarded Friday as an unlucky day and the 13th as an unlucky number. There are various theories as why Friday 13th is considered a particularly unlucky date, but both both the number 13 and the day of Friday have carried negative connotations throughout history. Of all the superstitions that endure in modern society, one of the most widely known is the old adage that Friday the 13th is somehow unlucky.

'Friday the 13th' – Here's What Victor Miller Can (and Might) Do With ... (Bloody Disgusting)

As most horror fans know by now, the film franchise has been held up for several years now in a legal battle between Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller ...

The argument continues to be that Miller wrote the screenplay as a “work-for-hire,” and therefore never should’ve been able to gain rights to the screenplay in the first place. For now, the two parties are still at odds with one another, and the only way for any progress to be made is for them to work something out. In other words, Miller only has young Jason Voorhees at his disposal, so he could theoretically work with filmmakers on a project involving Jason’s early years – before the mask. In other words, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the District Court’s previous order, rejecting the argument and concluding that “Miller was an independent contractor when he wrote the screenplay and is therefore entitled to authorship rights.” Summary judgement was awarded, therefore, to Miller. As most horror fans know by now, the film franchise has been held up for several years now in a legal battle between Friday the 13th screenwriter Victor Miller and Friday the 13th director Sean Cunningham, with the rights currently split between them. But what – if anything – can Miller and his team do with what they currently own?

Why Jason X Is a Perfect Friday the 13th Sequel (Den of Geek)

They want to see Jason Voorhees, of course, complete with his hockey mask and machete. But they likely also want to see some intellectually-challenged teens ( ...

The camera cuts away, but when we return, we see Jason slamming one girl-stuffed sleeping bag into another, a heightened version of his kill from Part VII. Thanks to its overstuffed cast, Jason X sends plenty of bodies to hit the floor. Jason pulls her back up, but only to smash the icy visage on the table, lifting the body back up again to reveal gooey red gore. By setting the movie in (the then-future of) 2008 and 2453, Jason X leans into the legend of Jason. When Rowan and Dr. Wimmer describe him, they’re talking about more than the guy we’ve seen on screen. But where its predecessor Jason Goes to Hell reinvented Jason as a body-hopping worm, X added only one twist to the structure: send Jason to space. Jason feels less like the creation of craven Hollywood producers and more like a boogeyman conjured by 11-year-olds trying to freak each other out. Jason X takes Mama Voorhees’s little boy far into the future aboard a deep space mission, but it carries with it all of the fundamentals of the Camp Crystal Lake where Jason lived and died and lived again. Even better, the film has two of the all-time best in the Friday franchise. It features all the hallmarks of early-2000s future stories, including a hot robot lady (Lisa Ryder as Kay-Em 14), clothing made of mesh and leather, and guys who call themselves “Azreal.” Moreover, it has a completely overstuffed cast, filled mostly with people who show up for a couple of minutes to crack jokes and then get killed. Those looking to get the whole experience in one film may choose the 2009 remake, but that movie tries to ground the story too much. It may surprise some Friday neophytes to learn that as formulaic as the series may be, not every entry contains all of those expected elements. But they likely also want to see some intellectually-challenged teens (played by people in their late 20s and early 30s) get torn apart by a lumbering monster they could never hope to stop.

Diehard 'Friday the 13th' fans are celebrating Jason Vorhees on his special day, regardless of the infamous lawsuit.

For now, fans will happily continue to celebrate one of the most frightening figures in horror. As many horror fans already know, a heated lawsuit between Sean S. Such also plays into Clover’s theory that the lack of femininity of the Final Girl works in parallel to the emasculated killer, writing, “[the killer’s] masculinity is severely qualified: he ranges from the virginal or sexually inert…and is spiritually divided (“the mother half of his mind”)”. Such certainly creates an interesting dynamic, in which the villainous Jason Voorhees can come to represent a violent societal uprising, a figure of repressed masculinity, or indeed, nothing at all. This isn’t because Voorhees is a prude, or even a genophobe, instead, the villain’s real hatred of sexual intercourse goes back to his original demise, when the summer camp councillors failed to notice him drowning as a child as they were too busy getting cosy in a cabin.

People who fear the date are deemed to have paraskevidekatriaphobia. The Western superstition can be traced back hundreds, if not thousands, of years.

And in Norse mythology, a divine dinner party was gatecrashed by Loki, the god of mischief, who brought the number of attendees to 13 and caused the world to be plunged into darkness. A regular drop in financial market performance on the date has been noted, perhaps due to people taking fewer risks. Jason Lives Director Wrote a Pamela Voorhees Friday the 13th ... (Screen Rant)

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives director Tom McLoughlin has an idea for a film or limited series exploring the early years of Pamela Voorhees.

Hopefully all those tangled rights issues can finally get worked out, allowing for more stories to be told within the Friday the 13th universe. And perhaps the best entry in the entire genre is actually a TV series, the show Bates Motel, which showed the early life of Psycho character Norman Bates with his mother Norma. Diary of Pamela Voorhees indeed sounds very much in the vein of Bates Motel, with its focus on a young Pamela slowly transforming into a killer while teaching a non-supernatural Jason how to be vengeful murderer himself. All-in-all, it sounds like McLoughlin has a great idea for bringing new life to the Friday the 13th franchise, and it has nothing to do with hockey masks. All those Friday the 13th sequels that followed the original movie are of course quite variable in terms of quality. But as all Friday the 13th fans know, the very first movie in the long-running franchise featured not Jason but his mother Pamela as the main protagonist. The supernatural Jason would then pick up his mother’s quest for revenge, rampaging through a series of 10 sequels to become an iconic horror monster.

Friday the 13th origins: A look at why the day is considered unlucky (FOX 13 Tampa Bay)

May 13 marks the one and only Friday the 13th of 2022 — a day that tends to evoke a range of emotions for the superstitious.

Many people also suffer from triskaidekaphobia, defined as the irrational fear of the number 13. Regarding the day of Friday, the negative connotation may also have roots in Christianity, History.com explains. In Western lore, experts believe the fear over 13 started in the Bible. Thirteen guests attended the Last Supper, including Jesus and his 12 apostles — one of whom, Judas, betrayed him. In Asia, 13 is just another number. The last occurred in August 2021, and the next won’t come until January 2023. It remains unclear when negative superstitions began swirling around Friday the 13th.

How to Stream Every 'Friday the 13th' Movie in 2022 (How-To Geek)

With his hockey mask and his machete, Friday the 13th's Jason Voorhees is one of the most recognizable villains in horror, even if his onscreen track record ...

It tells a shortened version of Jason’s origin story, before setting him loose on the requisite group of attractive young people lined up to get killed. Freddy manipulates Jason from the afterlife, as a way for Freddy to return and once again slaughter people in their dreams, which eventually leads to a showdown between the two killers. Robert Englund makes his final onscreen appearance as Freddy from the Nightmare on Elm Street films, and it’s more of a Freddy movie with a bit of Jason thrown in. A cryogenically frozen Jason is revived hundreds of years in the future aboard a research vessel traveling through space. Tommy Jarvis returns, too, played here by a third actor (Thom Matthews). Jason Lives is a franchise highlight thanks to the overtly comedic tone adopted by writer-director Tom McLoughlin. He gives the movie a throwback monster-movie feel, with corny jokes and an emphasis on spooky vibes over graphic violence and nudity. Budget constraints necessitated shooting most of this movie outside New York City, so the focus instead is on Jason killing various teens as they take a high school graduation cruise from Crystal Lake to NYC. Eventually, he gets to slash his way through some Big Apple landmarks, but it’s not nearly the triumphant invasion the title implies. Tommy Jarvis returns, now played by John Shepherd, living in a mental health facility after his traumatic encounter with Jason. The movie is a murder mystery of sorts set in this group home for teens, rather than at Camp Crystal Lake, with a killer who mimics Jason’s style but is someone else entirely. One of the foundational movies of the slasher subgenre, the original Friday the 13th doesn’t look like something that would spawn a decades-long franchise. Of course this isn’t actually the final chapter, although at one point it was meant to conclude the franchise. Here’s how to stream every Friday the 13th movie. It’s also presented in clumsy 1980s 3D, which is unavailable to stream, so that modern viewers just witness a lot of objects being thrust awkwardly at the camera. Jason makes his debut as the killer, rising from the dead to avenge his mother.

'Friday the 13th': Ranking 15 Different Jason Voorhees Character ... (Bloody Disgusting)

Ah, Friday the 13th. We all have collective ants in our pants wishing and hoping that all of the legal drama surrounding the franchise will dissipate so.

The sculpt and application of the make-up is wonderful, allowing Hodder to really emote underneath it all. 1. “On Friday the 13th, Jason is back. Having been rotting at the bottom of Crystal Lake for…well, a long time, Jason is resurrected by Carrie stand-in Tina. Savini takes his “mongoloid” design from the original film and extends it here for the adult version of Jason – giving the character one of his most frightening unmasked appearances of the all 12 films. The mask in this film is great. The aforementioned Derek Mears is a brilliantly physical Jason. He gives the role his all and gives other fan favorite performers a run for their money for Best Jason status. The Final Chapter’s Jason isn’t much different than Part 3D’s Jason, aside from the bloody axe wound and a slightly more worn look to the mask. While Jason later dons his hockey mask in the film, I would not have minded one iota if the filmmakers decides to keep Jason in the sack the entire time. At first glance Standard Jason in Jason X is the slasher we all know. Despite being slick and futuristic, Uber Jason is still recognizable as the Jason we know and love. He only shows up as a jump scare at the very end and is only seen for the briefest of moments.” Personally, the light gray jumpsuit and belt look is a bit uninspired and the body suit Hodder wears is a little too bulky.

Every 'Friday the 13th' Movie Ranked From Best To Worst (The Mary Sue)

A complete ranking of every single Friday the 13th film, starting with the best and going to the very worst. An encapsulation of the iconic horror ...

In fact, Jason swims and dives in many of the films in order to surprise his victims! Madness. It does have, however, one of the very best kills of the entire series, in which Julius engages Jason in a round of good ol’ fisticuffs and boxes him across several rooftops. Two thirds of the film takes place on the boat to Manhattan. And if you are wondering how a boat that seemingly boards on a lake in New Jersey manages to sail to Manhattan, well that is not even the wildest leap in logic in the film! It isn’t the most exciting film in the franchise, and certainly not the most exciting reinvention or reboot, but it does have one of the great Jason designs, and it hits all the beats of a Friday the 13th film, even if it is just mostly taking those beats from the original movies and rearranging them a bit. Set in a home for troubled youth, most think it is Tommy Jarvis, now a teenager, who has seemingly been driven insane by the events of The Final Chapter. Tommy is convinced that Jason has come back to life to get revenge. A reboot that takes the greatest hits from films 1 through 3 and remixes them into a new telling of the story. Honestly, people really did not like this one, but I love the silliness, and it came out in a time where the franchise (much like current beloved action franchise Fast and Furious), had nowhere left to go but to space! While Halloween (1978) was perhaps the first real slasher film, Friday the 13th established a lot of the classic slasher tropes and archetypes still in place today. One of the most comedic Jason films (it literally includes a Jason doing a James Bond 007 credit sequence homage), it also marks the beginning of decaying, zombie Jason. It’s also the only film in the entire franchise based around a summer camp that has actual kids at the camp! The final scene of a deformed Jason leaping out of the water Flipper style to grab Alice from the boat may have just been a dream sequence (or was it), cemented Friday the 13th and slashers as an important part of the horror genre. (No one stans like a Jason Voorhees stan.) That’s right, I am here with my definitive and absolutely correct ranking of every single Friday the 13th film, starting with the best and ending with the worst! The first is the reveal that Jason’s mom Pamela Voorhees is the real killer (trying to get revenge on the camp that killed her son back in 1957), and the second is that Jason is still alive!

Most of the movie is Jason body-hopping as his spirit possesses others around Camp Crystal Lake. This was really designed as a prequel appetizer to a future film in the franchise, Freddy vs. Depending on how you look at it, this is either the low point or the greatest moment of the series. One of cinema's most blatant lies in this movie's name, "Part IV" was not even close to the final chapter, even though it was once intended to be. Kind of a spoiler in the headline! Your best bet is to get a subscription to AMC+, as it carries most of the Friday the 13th movies (but not all), while later films in the franchise are on other streaming services.
