"The crack is a fracture and they are abundant on Mars and Earth - no need for marsquakes to produce them," said Professor Gupta, who has worked on the Curiosity mission with NASA. A deep crack or fissure is visible inside the "door", indicating a fracture in the rock - something that happens on both Mars and Earth and could have taken place any time in the past few hundred million years.

And Marsquakes probably had little to do with it: "Any block that is isolated by fractures can eventually fall downslope, even if the slope is gentle," Rossi told Live Science in an email. But Mangold is cool on the idea: "The whole mountain is seriously fractured, there's no need of big Marsquakes," he said. It seems "a large boulder has fallen out under its weight" to create the door-shaped cave, he said. But the real answer is that it's none of those things. The culprit is the rock lying on the surface just to the right of the "door," which appears to have a smooth vertical edge – possibly because it fell out relatively recently and hasn't been exposed for long to the Martian winds: It's "all very natural, and similar to outcrops you can see in many arid places on Earth," he said. Several natural vertical fractures are also visible in the image, among them fractures caused by the way rocks weather on Mars; and the small cave or "door" seems to have formed where the vertical fractures intersect with the strata, he said.

Though it looks like the entrance to an alien tomb, mission scientists say it's a natural feature.

Vasavada is a project scientist in the Mars Science Laboratory, and he said the formation is definitely not the entrance to a video game’s dungeon level. “The fractures we see in this area are generally vertical,” he explained. “It’s just the space between two fractures in a rock,” Ashwin Vasavada told Gizmodo in a phone call today.
