To be the top scorer in the Europa League as a full-back is amazing. In the last three or four years of my career, I was thinking back a lot to all the coaches I had and how they prepared games, how we trained, which exercises we did, but, in the end, I can look back and remember all the tactics I had with my teams. In my time, you could see the change in the different types of full-backs: more going forward and more supporting the attack than before. [Having played in a UEFA Champions League final, Barcelona's 2-1 defeat of Arsenal in 2006] the most important thing is to make sure you're not distracted by everything, and in the end it's a game, 11 against 11 on the pitch with a referee and a ball. Arsène [Wenger at Arsenal] – it was great to work with him – Dick Advocaat; Guus Hiddink; Frank Rijkaard, where we had a lot of success at Barcelona. Louis van Gaal was my coach in the Dutch [national] team. We have to make sure we are well prepared to defend well against them.

Pushed to her limits, Carpenter chases Champions League win that ... (The Sydney Morning Herald)

Matildas star Ellie Carpenter is on the brink of a second Champions League winner's medal, with her French club Lyon preparing for a blockbuster final ...

“I’ve always wanted to play in the Champions League, it’s one of the best competitions there is - the best against the best in Europe. You can’t get much better than that. Saying you’re the best club in Europe after you win, it’s quite a nice title to have. It’s so good for the game. “It brings the level up, it’s more competitive. “I’m more experienced, playing more high-pressure games week-in, week-out, with the league and Champions League,” she said. But you have to be, or you have to try to be. For now, though, the focus is Barcelona, who trounced Sam Kerr’s Chelsea 4-0 in last year’s Champions League final, but lost 4-1 when they met Lyon in the decider three seasons ago. Carpenter shares a dressing room with some of the world’s best players, including Norwegian superstar Ada Hegerberg, emerging American sensation Catarina Macario, Chilean goalkeeper Christiane Endler, and the backbone of the French national team that sits No.3 in FIFA’s world rankings. “I wasn’t really meant to be there, but I was, which was a great bonus. And so Sunday morning’s final (AEST) against Barcelona at the Juventus Stadium in Turin, Italy, is more meaningful, more real. It was no less amazing an experience for the dashing Matildas defender in her first taste of European club football, and just being on the team sheet made her the first Australian to have won a major European final since Harry Kewell with Liverpool in 2005. Two months after Carpenter joined Olympique Lyonnais, in mid-2020, she found herself on the bench for the 2019-20 Champions League final.

It has extraordinary significance, great significance, and that's why we're going to try our best so that we come home with the trophy and spend one or two nights celebrating with our fans. They obviously convey that to us in the stadium with the atmosphere and the support. We're a team who can quickly play forward, at a high pace, and the players are ready to play to their limits. We won in Munich against Bayern and also in the Europa League against Olympiacos, when we realised that with such a performance, we could achieve something big. Of course, we have great respect for Rangers, and it will be important to know how they play, how they attack, but most important of all is what we intend to do. Every team that gets to the final has earned it because it's a long road: you have to win a lot of matches.
