Burnley play Aston Villa for the second time in 12 days knowing a victory would put them on the brink of survival.

We played at Burnley recently and we played extremely well and we won the game comfortably. Burnley boss Mike Jackson will look to turn things around from the first game against Villa: "We learnt a lot as a group. In the moment, they don't always go the way that you want them to. "We'll definitely respect that Burnley are going to be the best version of themselves and it will definitely be a challenge." Burnley have scored in six of those seven games and have won one and drawn two of their games at Villa Park. Burnley played well at Spurs to frustrate Tottenham for large parts of that game, and the penalty that won them the game was controversial to say the least.

James Maddison put the visitors ahead at Stamford Bridge, before Marcos Alonso volleyed in an equaliser.

Aston Villa were in command at Turf Moor on May 7, taking the spoils in a 3-1 victory. "This group works better when we play in the now, mentally we're in a good place. Burnley's caretaker manager, Mike Jackson, will be looking for more from his team this evening if they want to stay in control of their Premier League survival hopes. He plays a one-two with Watkins, edge of the Burnley D, and tries to craft a shot towards Pope, but it's blocked. But he's been terrific, he's a top, top goalkeeper. McGinn whips in an early free kick from the left. which ends up behind for a Burnley goal kick. It's a terrific effort. McNeil clips it in, there's a Burnley head on the end of it. It's a lovely goal from the Argentinian. He makes a run from the centre-circle, after initially being down on his haunches, and not picked-up at all by the Burnley defence as he makes his way into the Burnley box. A terrific effort, and a strong save. Brownhill gets a volley away, on the left.

This is a nightmare for Everton. The whole thing stemmed from a mistake by Seamus Coleman, who miscontrolled the ball and was robbed by Mateta. 31 min: Aston Villa 0-0 Burnley Nick Pope makes a brilliant save to deny John McGinn, who belted a bouncing ball towards goal from the edge of the area. It’s so tense at Goodison. It doesn’t help that Everton don’t know whether they need to win or not. But if Leeds fail to win at Brentford, Everton will be safe whatever happens. I understand the theoretical appeal of relegation, as a chance to reset and build something new, but there are no guarantees that will happen. It was a scruffy goal, the hell Everton will care. Mykolenko’s long free-kick was headed down by Holgate to Keane, who took a touch and flicked it sweetly past Butland with the outside of his left foot. Palace 40 min: Aston Villa 0-0 Burnley Villa are starting to get frustrated by Burnley’s defensive competence. Emi Buendia, who gave away a penalty just before half-time, has equalised after the break. And now there are hundreds of fans on the pitch! Gray’s superb free-kick from the right was met by Calvert-Lewin, who powered a flying header into the far corner.

Burnley escape Premier League relegation zone after claiming draw ... (The Independent)

Aston Villa 1-1 Burnley: Goalkeeper Nick Pope's masterclass ensured the Clarets left Villa Park with an invaluable point.

Start your Independent Premium subscription today. Martinez initially kept out Connor Roberts with a fine reaction stop only for Roberts to tee up Weghorst and his shot was turned wide by a diving Mings. Until then Villa had bossed possession and the chance gave Burnley enough encouragement to get more of a grip of the second half – only to need Pope to ensure they claimed a point. There was swift redemption for Buendia as McGinn spotted his run from deep and, with Burnley failing to track the Argentina international, he met the ball on the volley for it to squirm past Pope. Kevin Long failed to clear Jacob Ramsey’s pass with the ball bouncing to McGinn for the midfielder to crack a half volley from 20 yards, only to be again denied by a stretching Pope. The goalkeeper’s masterclass ensured the Clarets left Villa Park with a point from a 1-1 draw after stops from John McGinn, Ollie Watkins, Danny Ings and – brilliantly – Bertrand Traore.

It was a man-of-the-match performance by the England goalkeeper and his Burnley team-mates were quick to acknowledge that. "The PGMOL said there was not enough force for that to be a red card. "I think that is a clear red card, probably one of the clearest I have seen this season. An elbow to the head of Tyrone Mings early in the half left the Villa captain on the deck. "I think we should have been playing against 10 men from a very early stage of this game," said the Villa head coach. That is a fact." With Burnley defending deeper and deeper, and Jackson making defensive substitutions, they appeared to have settled for a point. Everyone knows that is a red card. "I think Barnes is very lucky to be on the pitch," Dion Dublin told Sky Sports. "He doesn't look at Mings and that elbow is a bit naughty for me." Barnes did the rest from the spot. Jacob Ramsey was making some driving runs on his return to the starting line-up. But Jackson's side hung in there, broke up the play and began to cause problems from set-piece situations.

Burnley climb out of bottom three with precious point at Aston Villa (The Guardian)

Burnley drew 1-1 at Aston Villa despite the late sending-off of Matt Lowton to move out of the Premier League relegation zone.

Pope diverted Traoré’s deft header down to his right and then Villa survived a hairy episode when Martínez and Mings came to their rescue. Have you got to break someone’s cheek or make someone go off the pitch to be a red card? Ben Mee, Tarkowski’s usual sidekick and Burnley’s club captain, recently returned to training but remained on the sidelines in a club tracksuit here, instead helping Jackson with the warm-up and instructing from the away dugout. They need not have worried, with Barnes coolly sending Martínez the wrong way in front of the Holte End to register his first goal for 15 months. Even the straight red card shown to the Burnley substitute Matt Lowton could not taint a fine evening. Burnley picked up a precious point at Aston Villa to head into the final day outside the relegation zone and, crucially, with the upper hand on Leeds, who must better Burnley’s result on Sunday to avoid dropping into the Championship. As this game rolled into the sixth of what started as four nervy minutes of second-half stoppage time, Burnley’s supporters celebrated a free-kick on halfway like they did Ashley Barnes’s cool first-half penalty.

The Magpies have won 11 league games this calendar year, already more than they managed in both 2021 (8) and 2020 (9). - Burnley have lost their final league game in each of the last five Premier League campaigns since their return to the division in 2016, having won on MD38 in the two seasons they were relegated (4-2 v Tottenham in 2009-10, 1-0 v Aston Villa in 2014-15). - Maxwel Cornet has scored more home goals than any other Burnley player in the Premier League this season (4).
