An extra-time goal decided this Promotion Final in Dorking Wanderers' favour in an intense final that neither side deserved to lose.
Fleet were on the front foot in the second period but Dorking had men behind the ball and squeezed the attacking green shirts. Chances were at a premium after that, Egan ending a neat move in the 104th minute from close range the best of Fleet’s efforts to respond but that one was cleared. And it was Dorking who got the next goal in the eighth minute of extra time. He couldn’t quite squeeze it in but the ball came back out to substitute Tanner who drilled it low to send the Fleet end into absolute ecstasy. Paxman’s ball into Chapman in the box on 70 minutes required a little more power to trouble Lincoln but neither goalkeeper was overly taxed. But it was what happened moments before extra-time that will live long in the memory of Fleet fans with their side just seconds from the National League.
All eyes were on referee Jason Richardson's timekeeping as Ebbsfleet were denied promotion to the National League in dramatic fashion on Saturday.
The Fleet were guilty of trying to walk the ball in following a counter attack. Ebbsfleet thought they had won it two minutes into stoppage time when the Feet broke clear through Dominic Poleon, whose shot hit the post. Jombati missed the first header as Prior and Rutherford combined to set up James McShane, his midfield run untracked and he produced a lovely finish past Moulden. Jack Paxman fed Rakish Bingham inside the fifth minute but the Fleet striker was unable to keep his balance and get a shot away. He was quickly followed by Dorking’s Josh Taylor for a foul on substitute Lee Martin. The Fleet were beaten 5-1 at Dorking when the teams met in the league in January, and boss Kutrieb’s side reflected that game to a degree.
