“The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is all about helping everyone garden, even if you have next to no outside space at home… I thought about the woods and forests as places that look nice in the rain.” “The thing with the container and balcony gardens is that they are actually achievable whereas some of the bigger ones, they look so beautiful but you just think, ‘I could never have that in my garden.’ With a container garden you could take just one element and create that at home quite easily.”

Renowned florist Simon Lycett has designed the bespoke display featuring Lily of the Valley, Her Majesty's favourite flower.
Mr Lycett is among 10 new ambassadors chosen by the RHS to celebrate the first May Chelsea Flower Show since 2019. It is hoped it will be repurposed into a permanent feature in an RHS garden after the event. He said the week will involve lots of long hours to ensure the plants are well watered and “looking fresh”. “With a bumper crop of 39 gardens, the return of a spring RHS Chelsea will set the gardening season off with a bang.” The creation of the monument has been a “wild knuckle ride”, the florist explained, as Lily of the Valley is a very fragile plant which is now nearing the end of its season. Showgoers can expect a “sensory overload” walking past the monument, he said, “because 70 big pots of Lily of the Valley smell spectacular”.

New research released today by Mind shows the nation's mental health has benefitted from spending more time in nature since the pandemic.
During the week at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Mind have a host of activities planned to help engage audiences with the topic of mental health. We’re incredibly grateful to Project Giving Back and to Andy Sturgeon for giving Mind the chance to create a garden at the iconic RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2022, and to Dunelm for supporting the Mind Garden’s legacy.” Censuswide abide by and employ members of the Market Research Society which is based on the ESOMAR principles. As someone who’s lost a lot over the years, there aren’t many places on this earth where I feel as much love, as much acceptance and as much hope as I do in my grandma’s garden. In the Mind Garden, I want people to feel embraced. Once the RHS Chelsea Flower Show is over, the Mind Garden will live on, enabling more people to access ecotherapy - a formal type of therapeutic treatment which involves doing outdoor activities in nature. But this significant new research provides evidence that gardening in particular plays a key role in bringing together a host of things that are good for our mental health. I want people to feel protected when they are in it.” The Mind Garden creates a sanctuary for conversation - a circular seating area is set within curved lime rendered walls - it’s a place to sit side-by-side and share experiences and advice, surrounded by meadow-like spaces and calming birch trees. I was going through a bad time and didn’t care for my mini bonsai tree. New research released today by Mind shows the nation’s mental health has benefitted from spending more time in nature since the pandemic. The Mind Garden is designed by Andy Sturgeon, funded by Project Giving Back [3] and built by Crocus. As the statistics highlight, spending time outdoors and connecting with others can boost mental wellbeing, themes which Andy drew upon for his design.

Our gardening columnist gives a rough guide to the plants, the people, and the gossip that make the annual show so special.
His new release is Issey (above). A beautiful, long flowering clematis (early to late summer and early autumn flowering) with rich red/plum flowers. This is a classical/formal design (one of the few at the show) with symmetrical lines, a central rill surrounded by a narrow chamomile lawn and umbrella hawthorn trees. I have just had some outdoor sofa cushions covered in the material and am really pleased with them. A “rhizotron” – underground laboratory – has also been installed to enable visitors to study roots under the soil and their intereactions with plants and animals. Memorabilia from the show, problem plants and pests will join the exhibit. The bark came from Puretree Cork and is sold in 90x60cm sheets at £42.90. It is adhered to the ply with Bostik STIX T966 Turf (usually used for laying fake grass). Paul Harvey from Puretree Cork reckons it should last more than five years, possibly 20. The Botticelli planter is a new shape, too. The garden is moving on to Alder Hey where I’m sure it will be much appreciated. It’s not the easiest subject for a design, but the garden definitely works: the first thing you see is “Don’t treat soil like Dirt” in fun writing on an orange wall – which should get the message across. Juliet’s idea of highlighting the central role of soil is definitely original and one close to most gardeners’ hearts (and hands). The New Blue Peter Soil Garden is PGB-sponsored. According to its designer, Juliet Sargeant, Blue Peter was one of the reasons the anonymous donors got into gardening. Once you could order plants from Europe and have them in a couple of days; now it is three weeks, endless paperwork and inflated fuel prices.
