There are seven changes from the team that beat Southampton as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson return to the back line. A win for Man City against Aston Villa means the Reds’ result won’t matter in terms of who ends this season on top, but all Jurgen Klopp’s side can do is focus on securing another three points. That would complete a remarkable treble, having won both domestic cups already this season. It’s six without victory now for Bruno Lage’s side, they have dropped out of contention for a European spot and are set to finish between eighth and tenth this term.

Liverpool denied title but Paris can provide final flourish to superb ... (The Guardian)

Pieces were falling into place for an unlikely triumph but now Jürgen Klopp's thoughts must turn to the Champions League.

But the truth is that 92 points is, by any reasonable measure, an absurd number of points to have gathered; only once before has that not been enough to win the title, and that was this Liverpool in 2019. On a normal Sunday afternoon, Liverpool would probably have swept Wolves away but here, with the line in sight, with so much at stake, the muscles just felt a little tighter, the passing a little less fluent, the mechanisms just a little gummy. The possibility that Steven Gerrard might at last win the title for Liverpool had been teased almost to breaking point. They won and they hoped and in the end it wasn’t quite enough. Liverpool did their bit, and in the end that is all they could do. In the end it did not, but for 80 unlikely minutes it seemed as though it might.

Liverpool beat Wolves but fall short in race for Premier League title (The Independent)

Liverpool 3-1 Wolves: Goals from Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson secured a win that ultimately wasn't enough.

Son Heung-min had overtaken him in the race for the golden boot with a brace at Norwich. The Egyptian’s first goal in eight games, and only a third in open play since February, drew him level. Liverpool end the domestic campaign unbeaten in 2022 and at Anfield. But, crucially, not champions. Mane, who had got Liverpool’s equaliser, extended his own fine form, a ninth goal in 12 starts reward for the most menacing display of any of Klopp’s attackers. On a strange afternoon at Anfield, the loudest ovation was reserved for part of Liverpool’s past. Win the game and the league for Liverpool. He managed one but not the other, a Manchester City comeback taking Liverpool’s destiny out of their own hands. They have triumphed in 16 of their last 18 league games, but it was not enough.

Liverpool vs Wolves live: score and latest updates from Premier ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Sven-Goran Eriksson was City manager that day for the club's biggest Premier League defeat.

“It is the most exciting because I’ve seen how good the boys are and seen the steps that we’ve made with just two games to go. We have a talented group now, and we will have a talented group next year. And that’s what we will do. But we have to make a proper, proper machine of it and then we will go again and we will see." If they are going to play in two competitions [Premier League and Champions League] they maybe need a few more players but they will bring them in. And that’s what we always did. It’s up to us to judge what we make of that. “Nobody has to worry that the [present] gap will stay forever. Tottenham also held them to two draws in the league. But you do know that Erik ten Hag is arriving at Manchester United? And they don’t wait five years now or whatever – they will go big. We need to produce more numbers because the numbers from our offensive players don't allow us to over-perform. It's absolutely a joy to be part of it.

'It's amazing, Dad!': the Liverpool fans who lent their tickets to their kids (The Guardian)

Some season ticket holders made the ultimate sacrifice for the Premier League match and watched it from the pub.

He never raised the Premier League trophy as Liverpool captain, but as Aston Villa’s manager had the chance on Sunday to help his old club to victory by beating Manchester City. “If they beat City and we win, we win the league. Their victory in the end is the difference between being able to pay £30m and £80m for a player.” They became champions for the fourth time in five seasons and Liverpool’s title dream was over. A fan for 60 years, he remembered his own father bringing him to games and watching matches from the “boys’ pen”, a small enclosure for children. “I’m absolutely distraught,” said Alexander Pritchard, who had driven up with his girlfriend from Bargoed in the Welsh valleys without tickets: “At the end of the day, we have got to give City credit. She had given her 16-year-old son, Dylan, her ticket, and was left jostling for position with vaping 12-year-olds and a bunch of Egyptian tourists who were beside themselves when Mo Salah scored in the 84th minute.

IAN LADYMAN AT ANFIELD: If there was ever an image to tell the story of a season, it was as Mo Salah celebrated a goal that could have delivered Liverpool ...

Wolves had their reserve keeper John Ruddy in goal by now — Sa had not reappeared after half-time — and he denied Trent Alexander-Arnold, before defensive bodies were thrown in the way of shots from Luis Diaz and Mane. The home team had been pressing and, when Thiago Alcantara flicked on a pass from deep, Sadio Mane ran clear to beat Sa with his left foot. And not for a while. But once reality dawned that Villa had not indeed pulled level at 3-3, Liverpool played out the final moments of this game in relative silence. It was at that moment Salah and his remarkable team-mates knew the title was not to be theirs after all. They will have to be calmer and better against Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday evening. It was an inauspicious start by Klopp’s team and turned out to be typical. But this was a bitty, unconvincing performance, despite their weight of possession. Three fingers were showing on the right and just two on the left. But what a season this has been for Liverpool. Ninety-two points and no title. Their football was anxious and muddled. So there will be no quadruple for Jurgen Klopp and his team.

“It was also a chaotic period, or at least compared to the kind of control with which Jurgen Klopp’s players usually exert. That it actually ended up sounding like a compliment to Liverpool 's sheer force of will was entirely in-keeping on an Anfield afternoon where nothing was quite as it seemed. The dream quickly became a nightmare. “There was no mistaking the mood, the wonder that it might happen, that suddenly the eyes of the world had swivelled to this part of Merseyside, especially for those seven minutes when Manchester City found themselves two behind, and that the Premier League title might have been Liverpool’s for a single goal. In 24 of the past 29 seasons that would have been enough to win the league.
