Manchester City v Aston Villa: Premier League – live! (The Guardian)

Will Manchester City cinch the title on the final day, or will they slip-up and hand it to Liverpool? Find out with Rob Smyth.

If they don’t, and Liverpool win against Wolves at Anfield, City will endure the nightmare of a trophyless season - not to mention a potential Liverpool quadruple - and Pep Guardiola will be just another bald fraud in a world full of them. City are yet to win three titles in a row, but four in five is the next best thing. Even in England, where things are relatively competitive, this is only the ninth time it has occurred in 30 years of the Premier League. On the last four occasions, starting in 2012, City have been top of the league going into the final games. For City, the presence of Steven Gerrard, Philippe Coutinho and even Danny Ings at Villa has given this game an unnervingly whiffy narrative. A Harvard study proved categorically that, had Pearce been playing for any football club in Christendom at the time, he would have scored that penalty. 10 min McGinn retrieves a loose ball on the right and curls in a good cross towards the six-yard line. And if either Pep or Klopp turns up in a beige suit and slip on brogues, I’d just hand the trophy to them straight away.” This being the final day of the season, we have three liveblogs on the go. De Bruyne’s inswinger is headed wide by Fernandinho in front of the near post. Jesus retrieves the ball and gives it to Foden, whose right-footed shot deflects just wide of the far post. Digne gets to the ball first and stabs it clear. 39 min As things stand City are still top of the league on goal difference.

Manchester City win Premier League title after late comeback win ... (The Independent)

Man City 3-2 Aston Villa: Pep Guardiola's side were two goals down but scored three in six minutes to retain the title.

The longer City went without a proper chance, the more it was their crowd who were tested, with that tension starting to transmit to the pitch. In a move so reminiscent of Jamie Mackie’s goal for QPR on that famous day in 2012, Lucas Digne surged down the left to cross for Matty Cash. The classic subtext of afternoons like this is that the superior side are almost playing themselves, and their own issues, as much as the opposition. With Guardiola’s nervous backline again exposed by a basic ball up, the Brazilian was put clean through on goal. The mood had changed again. Olsen looked there to be tested, but that was the thing. Even the Belgian, however, was snatching at things. The element that really elevates the drama of such afternoons – or makes it excruciating, depending on your perspective – is just how visibly and drastically the psychology swings on key moments. They produced a final day for the ages. It was just equally impossible to escape the pure sporting drama. By 81 minutes, he’d hit a second and City’s third, to swing the title back to Manchester again. It didn’t go as late as that day against Queens Park Rangers, but it did have the same 3-2 final score, from even more a flurry.

And if it’s very hard to stop the invasions, punishment becomes the only solution. I think there is a big issue on the FA and Premier League’s plate to deal with.” At the City Ground on Tuesday, a ring of stewards stood around the perimeter of the pitch, roughly 10 feet away from one another. As a coach, manager, player or staff we want to be safe in our workplace. When you don’t know what can happen of course you fear for anything, for the players. Gerrard had been asked whether his players were unhurt in the celebrations and he responded: “The answer is no.

It gives a glimpse into the mindset of a team that has taken the league by storm - and is eager to do better next season. Many never expected Brentford to be in the Premier League at all; even fewer would have foreseen a 13th-place finish - and a comfortably one at that. Potter always speaks of the aim for his side being to make progress which does not necessarily mean finishing in a higher position. Their 26 games lost in the Premier League during 2021/22 was second only to the 2019/20 campaign (27). It is clear they need to find a goalscorer in the summer after no player hit double figures - Neal Maupay coming closest with nine. Lampard - who replaced Rafael Benitez in January - has achieved what he set out to do but he will know this is just the start. If it had not been for Brighton, United would be spending next season playing in the Europa Conference League - a competition befitting of this team. Boss David Moyes would have stressed how important it was to hold up their end of the bargain. Raheem Sterling made a difference too but it was the decision to turn to Ilkay Gundogan in favour of Bernardo Silva - and instead of Jack Grealish - that proved decisive. Of course, the result matters little right now and despite the scoreline, the Everton fans in attendance in north London were in celebratory mood after their escape from relegation. Instead there was recognition and appreciation from around the ground for the efforts and achievements of this Liverpool team. But when the full-time whistle blew and confirmed the destination of the crown, there was no crushing disappointment.

Bernardo Silva dropped into holding midfield alongside Rodri and ran the show, Chelsea failing to register a shot on target at home for the first time in 18 years. But City have not won the title because of training ground games. Three teams of six crammed on to a small pitch, flying into each other, the ball whizzing around like it is in a washing machine. What the sniping has done is solidify Guardiola’s relationship with the fans. The way in which City have gone on to lift this trophy is broadly akin to last year. Phil Foden will play a short game of two-touch to get a feel of the ball. Guardiola’s principles, however, stay the same. When the star men do not show up, the cavalry have arrived during this manager's tenure and there is something in that beyond mere ability. Last summer did bring change behind the scenes. ‘That is the best legacy. Like three years ago, the margins are minuscule. No, this is the homegrown group among Pep Guardiola's squad.

Manchester City's consistency was the difference in the Premier League this season. Fifteen different players have scored twice or more for Guardiola's side in the Premier League this season. The spirit in this stadium was down in the dumps, but when they got that first goal it turned and I started to believe." Raheem Sterling was the Premier League player of the month for December. Gabriel Jesus scored six times in April. Riyad Mahrez was the team's top scorer in all competitions but, incongruously, started only 14 Premier League games. When Spurs completed the double over them, they thrashed Manchester United in the derby on their Etihad return. Guardiola's side had the odd slip of their own, notably losing to Tottenham on the opening weekend. This is for the families. But this team fights to the end. "Gundogan is the best inside runner we have. It takes something special to come from behind like they did today and that comes from the manager. "This City group keeps going until the end.

Man City ahead of Manchester United and Liverpool FC greats after ... (Manchester Evening News)

Man United and Liverpool are two of just five clubs to have won the league in four years out of five - here's how Manchester City measure up against ...

Context - City racked up a new league points record with their first title under Guardiola in 2017-18 and came close to matching it in the breathless title race with Liverpool the following season. Liverpool have been exceptional - their points tally of 97 in 2018-19 is the third highest and would have won the title by a country mile in every season bar two - the Blues first two wins under Guardiola. Manchester United have also twice managed runners-up spots without coming close to threatening City’s dominance. Rivals - Chelsea’s takeover by Roman Abramovich in 2003 and smart appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager made them a new force to be reckoned with, along with an Arsenal side which games its second wind under Wenger. Chelsea won three titles in six years to interrupt the Reds’ flow and the Gunners remained fierce rivals. Context - the level of dominance United established in the Nineties had not been seen before in England, and has not occurred since. They were also-rans until the old committee that ran the club was swept away amid claims of ill-discipline and player drinking. Their early success in the cash-rich Premier League had allowed more transfer spending with Dwight Yorke, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jaap Stam and Andy Cole all bolstering the ranks and ensuring continuity. They also won two FA Cups in the same period Kevin Keegan’s exciting Newcastle blew their big chance in 1995-96 and managed a distant second the following year. Arsenal became known as the “Bank of England” club for their massive spending. Context - what Liverpool did from 1975 to 1986 was unprecedented in English football, a dominance no-one else had ever achieved. City have broken their way into that aristocratic cabal in astonishing style, setting new records for points, goals, winning streaks and many more over the past five years. Rivals - United developed a habit of beating their fierce rivals in league games but could not stop their dominance of the trophy haul, while Everton, with their 1984-85 and 1986-87 league wins started to put the brakes on the Liverpool juggernaut.

Man City weathered early storm to show hallmark of Pep Guardiola's ... (The Independent)

The Premier League champions overcame a testing early-season run to set the foundation for their triumph on Sunday.

And as long as their extraordinary manager is around, you imagine that will remain the case for a while yet. This level of superiority was not supposed to be possible in a league as competitive as the modern top flight. They are eternal in this club,” the manager of said legends declared, emotionally exhausted from the events of the final day and the nine-month slog that had preceded it. The suspension of Benjamin Mendy, the January sale of the unsettled Ferran Torres and a lack of true utility players capable of filling a range of positions left gaps that could not be easily plugged. The 27-year-old was considering his options and was not the only one. With this fourth title under the Catalan, only Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United have achieved the level of dominance City now enjoy during the Premier League era. And when you are as dominant as City have been over the past decade, improvement comes at the edges. Just as they appear to be in trouble, or about to embark on a run that will seriously test their credentials, they come out ahead of the competition regardless. Two points off the top, it was hard not to consider them favourites to get over the line in first place once more. Just five games into the defence of their Premier League title, City had already dropped five points. The outcome was far from perfect, too. Manchester City’s fourth title in five seasons was not won in September but, more importantly, it was not lost then either.

Player ratings for Manchester City's Premier League title winners (The Guardian)

Two of Pep Guardiola's squad are awarded 10 out of 10 for their contributions to the club's fourth title in five seasons.

Eight goals from a player signed as a centre-forward is far too low and continues a pattern: in six seasons the Brazilian has managed double figures only twice, registering a high of 14 in 2019-20 and 13 two years before. An undesired penchant for missing chances remains but Sterling can be a game-winner who this season has reverted to the driving-at-defenders forward of his earlier days at City. 8 But factor in how he can operate across attack and in midfield and how Guardiola often plumps for him as the false 9 and a richer understanding is allowed of a footballer whose ability to dazzle can suck the air from any onlooker. From full-back (mainly the left flank) Cancelo is a creative force with an eye for a pass and his geometric awareness of traffic and space is Toni Kroos-like. If Cancelo can be caught out via a quick counterattack this is a byproduct of City’s high line. What he offers is metronomic reliability and a teak-tough mentality: how the Ukrainian has performed so superbly during the harrowing invasion of his homeland by Russia is admirable. This is credit, too, to the rest of the rearguard and the attacking players: the 83 goals scored in 2020-21 has been eclipsed with 99.

In the heady days of summer, it wasn’t uncommon to see Chelsea being tipped for the title. Arguably, it was as good as the Chelsea No.9’s season would get.
