The permanent memorial to those lost in the atrocity was opened by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge less than two weeks ago. Each group of runners were, in the words of organisers, able to "honour the memory of those who lost their lives, acknowledge the courage of everyone affected and recognise the remarkable spirit shown by the city in the aftermath of the attack." “My thoughts are with the families who lost loved ones, those who bravely responded to the attack and all those affected by that wicked and cowardly act. The leader of Manchester City Council, Cllr Bev Craig, says it is "hard to believe that five years has passed" since "one of the darkest days" in the city's history. Families of those who lost loved ones have been able to place personalised memory capsules, containing mementos and messages, inside the halo. Memorial events have been held today to mark the anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack.

Victims of Manchester Arena terror attack remembered on fifth ... (iNews)

Survivors of the bombing, which took place at an Ariana Grande concert, are among those who have marked the anniversary ahead of Sunday's Great Manchester Run.

She said: “The fifth anniversary of the attack will have a personal meaning for every one of us. But however they wish to do so I would encourage everyone in the city to take some time out during the day to remember and reflect.” People in the city will also reflect on the tragedy at the Glade of Light memorial near the cathedral. The railway chaplain will also say prayers, floral tributes will be laid and a remembrance book will be open for people to leave their written tributes in. Moments of silence will also be held at Manchester’s Victoria Station, located close to the venue, at 12pm and 10.31pm. The cathedral will be open throughout the day for people to light candles, reflect and pray.
