“The RHS Chelsea Flower Show is all about helping everyone garden, even if you have next to no outside space at home… I thought about the woods and forests as places that look nice in the rain.” “The thing with the container and balcony gardens is that they are actually achievable whereas some of the bigger ones, they look so beautiful but you just think, ‘I could never have that in my garden.’ With a container garden you could take just one element and create that at home quite easily.”

In a nod to the Queen’s love of trees, the portrait sculpture will be covered on both sides with an assortment of native British-grown tree branches. The annual event, which opens to the public on Tuesday 24 May, will include a floral sculptural portrait of the monarch in the official platinum jubilee shade of purple. The Chelsea Flower Show will return to London this week, with special displays to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee.

Renowned florist Simon Lycett has designed the bespoke display featuring Lily of the Valley, Her Majesty's favourite flower.

Mr Lycett is among 10 new ambassadors chosen by the RHS to celebrate the first May Chelsea Flower Show since 2019. It is hoped it will be repurposed into a permanent feature in an RHS garden after the event. He said the week will involve lots of long hours to ensure the plants are well watered and “looking fresh”. “With a bumper crop of 39 gardens, the return of a spring RHS Chelsea will set the gardening season off with a bang.” The creation of the monument has been a “wild knuckle ride”, the florist explained, as Lily of the Valley is a very fragile plant which is now nearing the end of its season. Showgoers can expect a “sensory overload” walking past the monument, he said, “because 70 big pots of Lily of the Valley smell spectacular”.
