Who Do You Think You Are? Sue Perkins uncovers 'amazing' link to ... (Cornwall Live)

The comic presenter learned of a surprising connection between her comedy partner.

Surprised to even find it still standing, she opened the door and discovered that it had in fact been converted into a boxing gym. The peculiar coincidences didn’t stop there; Sue is a known boxing fan, saying at the start of the episode "some people might find their spiritual dimension in a lotus pose, I find mine in an uppercut. During this research, she uncovered a harrowing tale of refugees who fled back and forth between the borders of Nazi and Soviet control while living in eastern Europe throughout the Second World War. Mel previously said that her father described himself as a Pole of Lithuanian descent, and Sue would learn of a similar Lithuanian link, albeit further up the family tree. However, the latest episode of BBC’s long-running genealogy programme Who Do You Think You Are? has revealed a further bond between them. Seeing presenters Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc engrossed in a conversation makes you think that they could easily have been separated at birth.

THE POPULAR presenter Sue Perkins is the latest celebrity face to take part in Who Do You Think You Are? where her ancestry is explored.

As already briefly mentioned, treatment for prolactinomas depends on the size and location of the tumour. Despite being “non-symptomatic", perhaps one of the harder parts about her ordeal was being told she was unlikely to be able to have children. Tonight, viewers of the BBC One show will see Perkins explore the truth about her orphaned grandfather and a great grandfather interned as an “enemy alien" during the First World War. It was through filming another TV show during her career that Perkins first found out about her benign tumour which went on to cause “epic destruction” in her body. “At that time in my life I thought, maybe the balance is not quite right. Speaking on Lorraine a few years ago about her tumour, which is located in her pituitary gland, Perkins said: “It was very difficult for me to see all those headlines. The actress and broadcaster traced her roots to Lithuania and learned about her family's inspiring resilience.

Perkins never stopped talking, and it was clear that she had done a great deal of self-examination long before the show began. Her German-born great-grandfather was a tailor in London but during the First World War was interned at Knockaloe on the Isle of Man. At the beginning, Perkins joked that it would be great if she discovered roots in Lithuania, because that would be a match with her Great British Bake Off partner and best friend, Mel Giedroyc. Former Great British Bake Off host Sue Perkins discovered a surprising connection to co-star Mel Giedroyc in BBC's Who Do You Think You Are?

Elsewhere in the episode, Sue found another coincidence between her love for boxing and the Lithuanian church where her great-grandmother was baptised, after she realises that the same church has now been converted to a boxing gym. When travelling to Germany to find out more about her great-grandmother, the 52-year-old was told that she had been born in a part of Russia, that is now Lithuania. Talking to Mel at the beginning of the episode, about what she already knew of her family history, she began: ‘I know that there’s some kind of Eastern European connection and part of me’s hoping it’s Lithuania because I really like the idea that my ancestors were toshing around the same neck of the woods as yours.’

Sue Perkins discovers link to long-time comedy partner Mel ... (WalesOnline)

Sue, 52, was desperate to know where in Europe that her family came from.

Whilst there, she finds out that Anna was originally born near Marijampole, close to the border of Germany. After seeing Anna’s family tree, Sue learns that she was one of ten children. After looking into the life of her paternal grandparents, Sue meets author Robert Winder in London to find out about Emil and Anna Müller. From German heritage, the Müller family were looked on with suspicion. In 1939 - just before the outbreak of the Second World War, Germany and the Soviet Union signed a nonaggression pact that gave Lithuania to the Soviets. The Tislau family, therefore, went to live in Germany. Upon arriving there, they were subjected to Nazi medical evaluations - a cover for racial profiling. Avid-boxer Sue begins her journey of discovery when she visits Mel. She takes a box of photos that her mother has given her and discusses them with her famous co-host. “I really like the idea that my ancestors were toshing around the same neck of the woods as yours,” she said. She's best known for fronting the first seven series of The Great British Bake Off with long-time comedy partner, Mel Giedroyc and now, thanks to an appearance on BBC One genealogy show, Who Do You Think You Are, Sue Perkins has discovered a brilliant link to her on-screen pal.
