FOR Scotland it is game that could take the men's team one step closer to the dream of a place in the World Cup finals.

“It’s a sporting event, it would be disrespectful to the Ukrainian team to treat it as anything different because they are a team of athletes as well and they would want to be treated as a team of athletes,” said the 29-year-old. And the 34-year-old said most of the world would be backing the Ukrainians. “Yes, politics and sport shouldn’t mix and there’s more important things of the war going on at the minute, but it would be a massive uplift for the country and its soldiers,” he said.

"The guys know that when they turn up we're on a good run and we want to keep that good run going for at least two more matches," the 58-year-old said. "They made a decision to get their football players out of the country and into a training camp to prepare for the game because they want to play, they want to try and give their nation a boost by qualifying for Qatar.

Scotland v Ukraine: What our writers think will happen at Hampden (The Scotsman)

Our team of writers try to predict the outcome of Scotland's World Cup play-off against Ukraine ... By Mark Atkinson. Wednesday, 1st June 2022, 7:20 am.

Matthew Elder: In normal circumstances I would be confident that the current Scotland team, unbeaten in eight under Steve Clarke with a full Hampden Park behind them, would overcome any nation ranked outside the world's top 20 in a World Cup play-off. Scotland have a strong midfield and a striker in Che Adams who has given the team a new dimension, but the defence remains a concern, particularly without the hugely important Kieran Tierney. I hope I'm wrong, but with the world behind them, I can see Ukraine breaking Scotland hearts on Wednesday. Score prediction: Scotland 1 Ukraine 2. Andrew Smith: Buckle up might be the best advice to give to any Scotland supporter heading along to Hampden. None of the elements that provide the backdrop to the country’s World Cup play-off semi-final against Ukraine suggest a straightforward encounter. If the Ukraine team can perform to their pre-war capabilities, then they are a side so evenly-matched with Steve Clarke’s men, it would seem to set up a play-off that could easily go the distance. It is difficult to know how the visitors will deal with the onerous responsibility placed on their shoulders to lift a nation ravaged by an horrendous war inflicted on them by Russia. Or how match-sharp the home-based players in their team will be following a month in a Slovenian training campaign, and a set of friendlies, subsequent to the necessary suspension of domestic football since the March invasion. But so will Scotland, roared on by a capacity crowd who are aching to see their side at another World Cup. It’s set to be an emotional, anxious and very possibly long night.

A place in what is effectively the play-off final against Wales awaits on Sunday, and 'all' we have to do is get past Ukraine at Hampden tonight in the semi-final. Outside the Tartan Army, of course. I fear Gareth Bale more than I worry about Wales, but we'll take it a game at a time. The eyes of the footballing world will be on this for what will no doubt be an emotional affair, with Scotland the team everyone wants to lose. They've also not lost in their last seven games. This is the best squad Scotland have had for some time, so should go into it with confidence, even without talisman Kieran Tierney, and with Hampden rocking, hopefully we can get over the line and into the final.

And McCoist told talkSPORT that he reckons fans will be smart enough to realise there's bigger things going on around the world than a football match. And one group of fans have working tirelessly since the start of the year to raise funds for a tifo which will be displayed in the North Stand. Hampden is set to be packed to the rafters and the forecast is even showing it to still be around 17 degrees come kick-off. Flyers containing a phonetic version of the national song will be handed out for fans to join in. The old lady of Mount Florida is going to be absolutely rocking in what could be one of the best nights ever at the stadium given what's at stake. The domestic-based players - of which there are many - will be short on match sharpness and as a group the emotional impact is impossible to comprehend. Let's be clear, this group of Ukraine players will be as ready as they possibly can be given the traumatic circumstances of what is going on in their homeland. Scotland v Ukraine: World Cup 2022 qualifying playoff – live! (The Guardian)

A playoff final place is at stake but this will be an emotional, significant occasion for reasons far beyond football. Join Scott Murray for updates.

While Ukraine are looking to add to their one and only appearance at the World Cup, in 2006, Scotland have dreams of their own, hoping to make it for the first time since 1998. Yaremchuk tries to retrieve it with a ludicrous sliding challenge on Gilmour, and he’ll have to spend the rest of this highly charged evening on a deserved yellow card. (We’re still stuck in Poland by the way, because some people in the UK can’t get their heads out of their arses and give us permission for the beautiful dumbass cat.)” The national anthem of Ukraine rings around Hampden, sung loudly and proudly, and with great determination. Yaremchuk tees up Tsygankov, who from the edge of the box sends a rising screamer goalwards. “It will be interesting to see how Scotland manage to cope with being in England’s usual situation of the rest of the world hoping that they lose,” quips Stuart Rarity. 23 min: ... but this is a good response by Scotland. First Adams goes over in the box as he tries to get on the end of an aimless left-wing cross. 28 min: Dykes wriggles his way out of a tight spot in his own half and looks long for Adams down the right. Flower of Scotland meanwhile gets another good airing in the stands. 20 min: Scotland don’t clear the corner, and soon enough Yaremchuk is snatching at a shot from ten yards. The pass isn’t up to standard, but once again that’s a decent situation crafted out of very little, and it’ll give Scotland heart. The busy Dykes drops back to make sure nothing comes of it.

Scotland, Ukraine and Wales are competing for the final spot in group B of World Cup 2022 and a match-up against England.

Ukraine arrive for the clash as something of an unknown entity due to the disruption in their preparation caused by the effects of the Russian invasion. A camp was set up in Brdo, Slovenia, to give the squad a chance to prepare after the Ukrainian Premier League was terminated in April, with only 18 of 30 fixtures fulfilled. The match was postponed in March due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leaving Wales to wait to find out their play-off opponents after a 2-1 victory over Austria.

I made the change at half-time but we didn't give ourselves the chance to utilise that change because we were 2-0 down very early in the second half. Ukraine notch emotional win over Scotland to move one step away ... (The Independent)

Scotland 1-3 Ukraine: They will face Wales for a place at Qatar 2022 after Roman Yaremchuk, Andriy Yarmolenko and Artem Dovbyk scored at Hampden Park.

The working circumstances of the last few months naturally started to have an effect, and they started to be forced back. Gordon had already come out, to leave the goal open, but Yarmolenko still had to close it out. For one speculative Callum McGregor strike, it somehow went in. It was who they were pushing themselves to the very limit for, in those frantic last few minutes when tiredness of course set in. Players began to slip at crucial moments. By clicking ‘Register’ you confirm that your data has been entered correctly and you have read and agree to our Terms of use, Cookie policy and Privacy notice. It eventually got to the point where not even Gordon could do much for Yarmolenko’s next effort. That is a phrase that sounds almost ridiculous given the character of these players in even giving an account of themselves for a game like this, but they feel more than anybody that they need to do this for their country. They were just a class above Steve Clarke’s side, repeatedly cutting them open with angled moves. It was a beautiful moment for a player who had been one of the sporting images of the country’s fate earlier this season on being reduced to tears when being cheered on as a substitute for Benfica.

Scotland vs Ukraine: Player ratings and analysis as heroic visitors ... (iNews)

On a night for the ages at Hampden, 13 men and one manager earned a victory that will be etched in the annals of Ukraine's history.

But this was not the Scotland of the rest of the qualifying campaign, or of Wembley 12 months ago. This is a side that in more innocent times for their homeland had carved themselves out a presence in major tournaments, reaching the last eight of the summer’s Euros before succumbing to England. Understandably lost in the pre-match noise was that Petrakov’s side had emerged unbeaten from two games with world champions France in their qualification group. By then it was almost too late, Ukraine having clinically exposed the deficiencies that remain in this Scotland side. Ukraine conjured a victory that was so special, the home fans stayed behind to applaud the courage on show. Hampden was its usual crucible of noise, of course, but the downright hostility that has cowed better opponents than Ukraine was understandably absent.

Ukraine deny Scotland on emotional night to set up playoff final with ... (The Guardian)

Andriy Yarmolenko, Roman Yaremchuk and Artem Dovbyk gave the war-torn nation a deserved 3-1 victory at Hampden Park.

The problem was, Ukraine doubled their lead before Scotland had a chance to implement their new plan. That the erratic Bushchan played his part in a Scotland goal was little surprise. Earlier, when draped in the flags of their country, Ukraine players had clapped those supporters for their widespread applause of their national anthem. That essentially happened straight from kick-off, with every crunching tackle by those in navy met with roars of approval from the majority of the crowd. The scale of emotion as Ukraine celebrated their win was appropriate. The only threat to Ukraine’s bid to keep their World Cup campaign alive came from a level of physical and mental fatigue that was wholly understandable.
