When the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped back from royal life their status within "the firm" changed.

However, when it comes to jubilee balcony appearances there is precedent for just a handful of royals to appear. However, all may not be finalized as far as the Platinum Jubilee balcony goes. “After careful consideration, the Queen has decided this year’s traditional Trooping the Colour balcony appearance on Thursday 2nd June will be limited to Her Majesty and those Members of the Royal Family who are currently undertaking official public duties on behalf of The Queen,” a spokesman told reporters last month as preparations for the events were announced.

Trooping the Colour is the first event of the four-day Queen's Platinum Jubilee spectacular.

In what was the children’s first carriage procession, they arrived at Horse Guards Parade to a short rendition of the national anthem and watched the ceremony from the window. Everybody around the world loves her.” Samantha said: “We have had it planned for a few years. Trooping the Colour originates from a 1700s tradition in which different regiments would show off their flags so that troops would recognise them during battle. The group, from Animal Rebellion, were arrested. The Wessexes’ carriage followed afterwards with the Queen’s youngest son Prince Edward, his wife Sophie, and their two children in attendance.

Most of the senior royals will travel to the event from the palace in carriages. The Duke of Cambridge and the Princess Royal will join the Prince of Wales on horseback. Charles will be taking the salute as the Colour of the 1st Battalion Irish Guards is trooped, and will inspect the Troops of the Household Division on behalf of the monarch. The Queen, Prince Charles, Prince William and Princess Anne will not be watching from the Major General’s Office as they will be carrying out royal duties. The room overlooks the entrance to Horse Guards, and traditionally royals watch the parade from there if they are not taking part. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been invited by the Queen to watch the event from the Major General’s Office overlooking the parade in Whitehall.

The queen had previously said that Harry and Meghan would not be able to join her on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, saying this privilege would be reserved only for working members of the royal family. At least two protesters, one of whom was wearing a mock crown, were dragged away by police after they attempted to interrupt the opening minutes of the queen’s birthday parade. She then went back into the palace before re-emerging with a full complement of working royals, including Kate, William and their children to observe a six minute flypast of 70 aircraft, one for each of her years on the throne. The California-based couple were said to have arrived discreetly at Horse Guards Parade in London by car with their children, in contrast to some other members of the family who arrived publicly in horse-drawn carriages. Her Majesty, who has been experiencing mobility problems, used a stick but otherwise walked unaided. Official royal sources told the media that Harry and Meghan and their family were ensconced with other members of the royal family in the Major General’s Office, a large ceremonial room with a prime view of the ceremony, known as Trooping the Colour, which marks the queen’s official birthday.

Harry and Meghan, along with their kids Archie and Lilibet, arrived in the U.K. for Queen Elizabeth's Platinum Jubilee celebrations.

This year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are keeping a low profile as they attend Queen Elizabeth's annual birthday parade. Today marks the parade's return to Buckingham Palace. The couple—who arrived in London yesterday afternoon with their children, three-year-old Archie and 11-month-old Lilibet—last made a public appearance at the parade in 2019, prior to them stepping down as senior members of the royal family in 2020.

I think that for someone of her age to have four full days, one after the other - " They've been invited, they've been given full security, so the Queen has endorsed it. Maybe it's making it better for the Queen, maybe she feels more comfortable that they are there." The presenter interjected: "I don't think they forced themselves, they didn't say we're coming no matter what. "I think inviting Harry and Meghan to the Jubilee celebrations will be hopefully not only an olive branch from the Queen to them, but also maybe hopefully might provide a rapprochement within the Royal Family itself." But I don't think you can then influence all the population to feel exactly the same.

Meghan and Harry remain behind the scenes at Platinum Jubilee (The Washington Post)

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were noticeably absent from Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee celebrations in London.

Harry was in Britain last year for the funeral of his grandfather Prince Philip. But the queen stripped Andrew of his honorary military titles in January and is now herself colonel of the regiment, which brings the title full circle. Meghan visited Uvalde, Tex., last month to pay respects to victims of the school shooting there. Nor was he in the royal carriages, which included his younger brother Edward. Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan were photographed at the Major General’s Office, Horse Guards Parade earlier. In the end, it was a no — at least for Thursday’s big event, the “Trooping the Color” military parade.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan kept a low profile Thursday after jetting in to attend celebrations for Queen Elizabeth's 70th year on the throne.

The queen elected to only have "working royals" on the balcony, excluding Harry, Meghan and Andrew. While they were only semi-visible, Harry and Meghan were watching the parade in the same room as other senior royals not involved in the ceremony. The Sun wrote that Harry and Meghan "took a backseat" at the event.
