Jeff Beck: Royal Albert Hall, London – live review (Louder Than War)

Jeff Beck at Royal Albert Hall is 80 minutes of frequently complex and intricate music, impeccably performed. Louder Than War reviews.

And yet, as he lays down his guitar at the end, says a few quiet thank you’s, and waves goodbye, he’s as unassuming as that first day he arrived at Waters’ recording session. Musically, Beck and his band never put a foot wrong. Despite the warm response he receives from the audience, his presence is (at very best) distracting. But the clearest sign that he’s still enjoying this, just three weeks shy of his 78th birthday, are the spontaneous smiles he shares with his band. On Jeff Beck’s first day recording Roger Waters’ album Amused To Death, the story goes, he showed up with a distortion pedal in his back pocket and an unplayed signature Fender ripped out of a cardboard box moments earlier. Occasionally, at the end of the day, Waters would noodle on that guitar.

“I’m sad I lost this case. “I think they were ill-advised to bring the case and I said that right at the beginning because nobody shows themselves off to their best advantage at the break-up of a relationship.” However, in this instance, Mr Justice Nicol dismissed the Pirates Of The Caribbean star’s claim, saying News Group Newspapers (NGN) had proved what was in the article to be “substantially true” and this was later affirmed by the Court of Appeal.

Mr Stephens said: “Judges are alert to it and juries are not, so it works with juries most of the time. He explained that in both countries the same legal device called DARVO was applied, where lawyers deny the allegations, attack the reputation of the victim, and then reverse the roles by saying the defendant is the perpetrator and vice versa. Leading reputation management lawyer Mark Stephens has said he feels the actor and Heard have both created “indelible stains” on their careers.

Johnny Depp joins Jeff Beck on stage as he celebrates actor's 'result' (Metro)

Johnny Depp's winning result in his defamation trial against Amber Heard was celebrated by Jeff Beck at their Gateshead gig on Thursday.

Despite Depp being awarded a total of $15m in damages, Judge Penney Azcarate reduced Depp’s $5m punitive damages to instead award $350,000, the maximum in Virginia. He also has to pay Heard the $2m in compensatory damages she was awarded, so he therefore walks away with $8.35m in overall damages. On Wednesday, the jury confirmed that they had unanimously reached a verdict, awarding Depp $10m (£8m) in compensatory damages, and a further $5m (£4m) in punitive damages. What a result!’ He also celebrated his win with Beck and Geordie local Sam Fender at a pub in Newcastle on Wednesday, where he took time to greet fans. On Thursday, Depp waved cheerily to fans as he arrived at the venue near Newcastle, as well as making an impromptu visit to a wildlife rescue centre. The star, who has now been confirmed to join his musician pal on the rest of Beck’s UK tour dates, which run up to June 7, took to the stage for the fourth time and was reportedly met with a chorus of cheers and applause from the audience.
