The Prince of Wales put his riding skills to the test on Thursday as he followed the carriage procession down The Mall on horseback.

In front of the trio were three carriages full of royals. In the first carriage was the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge, accompanied by their three children – George, Charlotte and Louis. The 73-year-old heir to the throne was riding a horse called George. Alongside him, William was riding Derby, and Princess Anne was aboard Sir John.

It is an annual tradition features a display of military skill and strength, with members of the Royal Family often taking part and observing.

He also has a Garter Star, awarded in 2008 in recognition of his loyalty and service to the sovereign. Like his brother, Prince Harry has received Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals. The Earl of Wessex has received Silver Jubilee, Golden Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee medals; he was given the Canadian Forces’ Decoration, New Zealand Commemoration medal, one for the Golden Jubilee of the Sultan of Brunei and a Royal Victorian Order star and Order of the Garter star in 2006. In years gone by the Queen attended on horseback herself, but more recently she has ridden along in a carriage.
