Nine incredible things you never knew about St Paul's Cathedral (Evening Standard)

Among other things, it's a haven for Mary Poppins and Harry Potter fans.

From 1710 to 1965, the 365-foot-high cathedral was the tallest building in the capital. Since then, much has changed and the cathedral is now the 53rd tallest building in the capital. If you take a photo inside the cathedral, one of the lovely boys and girls who look after the place might take your leg off. It's one of the most amazing snaps you'll ever get. Whatever and whoever put it there, it definitely proved to be one of the cathedral's coolest moments. Great Paul is the second largest bell ever cast in the British Isles (the largest was the one used during the 2012 Olympic Games). He weighs 16.5 tons and forms one of the largest set of ringing bells on the planet.

The speed of the backlash against the prime minister is said to have taken MPs by surprise and has left rebellion plans poorly organised. He has said he believed his presence there to be ‘essential’ and part of his duties as a leader – an excuse the Met Police appear to have accepted. More than 45 Tory MPs have publicly criticised Mr Johnson in the wake of the partygate scandal and the publication of Sue Gray report. Mr Johnson became the first ever sitting prime minister found to have broken the law when he was hit with a fine for attending his 56th birthday party in the cabinet office, alongside wife Carrie and Chancellor Rishi Sunak. The Sue Gray report said the ‘senior leadership’ in No 10 must ‘bear responsibility’ for the culture which led to lockdown rules being repeatedly broken at a series of events in 2020 and 2021. Boris Johnson was forced to apologise to the Queen over the party, which went on until 4am and became so out of control that a swing in the Downing Street garden broke.
