Declan Rice did well to win it in midfield and quickly guide the ball up to Kane who heads it into the box. 14 mins: Close! Kane crosses one into the middle and the ball bounces up nicely for the arriving Mason Mount who can’t head it towards goal. Nations League: Hungary 0-0 England - debuts for Bowen and Justin (BBC News)

England's encouraging start continues as Jarrod Bowen races into the box before losing possession. We've seen that run many times before when he has been playing for West Ham.

England need to look at that and play those progressive passes to get higher up the pitch. England maybe looking a bit more dominant in possession and more in control. The guy is just not good enough for international football. He needed treatment for a knock in the first half before carrying on. A really good knock back into Zsolt Nagy. He is allowed to arrive on the edge of the 18-yard box to see if the ball drops his way. would normally put on In The Night Garden, but no need as this football will send him to sleep…

Stuart Broad and the three balls that hauled England back into ... (Telegraph.co.uk)

Facing the prospect of yet another imposing total to chase, England's 'team hat-trick' provided a much-needed galvanising effect.

It was a moment of the sort that, when he and Anderson were dropped from England’s tour of the Caribbean in March, Broad feared he would never enjoy again. This time, despite a brief flurry from Tim Southee, England stuck to their plans, pitching the new ball up. Such is the potency of Broad in moments like this. Actually, when you gave it a little bit of thought and analysis you thought ‘yeah, actually, he's got the sort of ruthless edge where he could drive the dagger home with a good twist at the end’. Broady is a bit like a shark in the water - if he smells blood he’s quite ruthless and wants to go in for the kill.” Broad is the only England cricketer in history to be player of the match in three wins that have sealed a series victory over Australia. No matter his status as the second most prolific Test bowler in England history, Broad’s lengths have been a perennial debate, with many believing that he often errs a little too short.

At the end, Kane shot weakly when he might have squared for the substitute Jack Grealish. England had come up short. Jarrod Bowen was a willing runner off the right on his debut and, after seeing an early effort blocked by Attila Szalai, his eyes lit up when Alexander-Arnold picked him out with a cross from the right. It looked as though he had pulled it off only for the long-range lob to veer off target at the last. Addressing a high diagonal from left to right, Loic Nego volleyed over a sumptuous first-time ball, low along the corridor of uncertainty behind England’s back line, and it was made to measure for Szoboszlai. Out flew Pickford and he certainly spooked Szoboszlai, who could only prod past him with little power. The award was soft – rather like England up to that point – but it was correct and punishment for a moment of clumsiness from Reece James, who had only just entered as a substitute. And so he stepped across Zsolt Nagy to make sure that the Hungary wing-back could not give chase.

England suffer unexpected stumble on road to Qatar before young ... (The Guardian)

Gareth Southgate's team produced a flat performance in defeat despite a far less hostile environment than on their last visit to Hungary.

Volleyed half-chances at either end of the game highlighted that propensity; as Southgate pointed out afterwards, by the close he had taken most of the side’s shots. Any sense of menace was dialled down close to zero, the scenes outside resembling arrangements for a summer camp rather than a fixture with unsavoury recent history. They are five months from a World Cup to which traditional supporters may not flock, in a country with little football culture of its own. In the matchday programme, the section dedicated to Hungary’s visitors was adorned with mini profiles of English national treasures. But a highly unusual setting brought what, by recent standards, was a thoroughly singular outcome: a no-show from Gareth Southgate’s players and a ripple in what had been a largely smooth path to Qatar. England had toyed with Hungary amid the most unpleasant circumstances in September and might have expected a repeat in front of more than 30,000 energised youngsters.

Root, Stokes put England on the brink of a win (International Cricket Council)

Ben Stokes and Joe Root put England within touching distance of a win on day three of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's.

The England captain had his lucky stars to thank for – he chopped onto his own stumps when he was batting on 1 but replays showed Colin de Grandhomme had overstepped. Together with Ben Foakes, he took England safely to stumps, just 61 runs away from a win. After the break, the two batters were a lot more positive. However, this time, they had their skipper and the former captain put on a rearguard to ensure there was no further collapse. The ton, the second of his Test career, couldn't have come at a better time with Mitchell coming in to bat when New Zealand were reeling at 35/3. Jamieson though ensured that there was no more damage done as he scalped the dangerous Bairstow in the very next over.

Hungary 1-0 England ratings: Jarrod Bowen looked to make things ... (Sky Sports)

Jarrod Bowen is one of few positives as England suffer defeat to Hungary, a nation ranked 40th in the world; Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Justin ...

Combined well with Saka down the left as England looked to unlock the Hungary door. England struggled with Hungary's long diagonals throughout and the lapse in concentration epitomised Southgate's team as a whole. It seemed innocuous, even harsh, but the Chelsea full-back was penalised and booked for a foul inside the box on Nagy. A chance generated of his own making, but England had very little else to show from this abject display. When England looked to go through the middle, they were often caught on the ball, but the 18-year-old held his own. Led England out for the 46th time as captain, Kane often did much of his work outside of the box. Blocked a Loic Nego shot with his arm tight to his body in the second half. Eleven months out with an ACL injury, his England debut was cut short at the interval having felt a twinge in the opening period. Mature beyond his years, Bellingham's 12-game winning run for England was ended, but that record was partly due to Southgate turning to him during favourable matches. Was too straight and too slow in his pass to Jarrod Bowen which led to a quick turnover and an audacious effort from Adam Szalai with Pickford off his line. Rose to meet an Alexander-Arnold corner in the second half but was unable to direct his effort on target and his long diagonals were hit and miss. Showed his range of passing to switch play but quick ball was too rarely seen, and his tired corners were desperately over-hit.

6 talking points including England's team hat-trick and Ben Stokes ... (Mirror.co.uk)

England need 61 runs to win the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's, with Joe Root on 77 not out after yet another chaotic day of Test cricket.

The very next ball, Broad produced a beauty to bowl Jamieson for a duck and reduce New Zealand to 251-7 in a stunning passage of play. De Grandhomme certainly did not have his best day in a New Zealand shirt, which began when he was run out for a duck. However, replays showed De Grandhomme had overstepped and Stokes was given a reprieve. He also got the key wicket of Stokes later in the day, ending the day with X-XX from XX overs. After scoring three boundaries in one over, Bairstow was tasked with seeing out the final over of Jamieson's spell. But when you are throwing your hands at a ball with a gap between bat and pad that you and I could swim through... Just three overs after England's team hat-trick, Anderson pinned Blundell lbw for 96 to leave New Zealand 265-8. First, Broad got the key wicket of Mitchell caught behind for 108. Anderson then pinned Tom Blundell lbw for 96, a heartbreaking end to a brilliant innings, before Matty Potts and Matt Parkinson took the final two wickets. Together, he and Root began formed a crucial partnership worth 90 before Jamieson dismissed Stokes for 54. After resuming on 236-4 with a lead of 227, New Zealand looked to stretch their lead. Mitchell was the first wicket to fall, getting caught behind off Stuart Broad for 108.

England manager Gareth Southgate is happy to test his World Cup formula in the more pressurised environment of the Nations League – despite Saturday’s defeat to Hungary.

England player ratings vs New Zealand: Ben Stokes truly a mixed ... (Evening Standard)

A Joe Root century helped England to a five-wicket win over New Zealand on the fourth morning of the first Test.

Stokes had him on at the wrong end at first, but it was smart to let him bowl at the tail, which brought his first wicket. Listless in the first innings, but outstanding in the company of Root second time round. Loose shot in the collapse, then a wild ride of a knock in the second. Gave England a sensational start to the match, and had Will Young’s number. A failure in the first innings sparked the collapse, but a special second innings that won England the match. Bowled fine, sweeping up the final wicket in the first innings, then resorting to bumpers in the second.

Joe Root completes century and hits 10000th Test run as England ... (The Independent)

England quickly wrapped up victory at Lord's as Root's unbeaten 117 helped secure a five-wicket win over New Zealand in the opening Test match.

Root finished the job in a blaze of glory, taking Southee for three boundaries in an over as he wrapped things up with a merry swing through mid-wicket. New Zealand had hoped to hang in and needed the second new ball to work some magic for them. Later, with the target dipping below 30, he rocked onto his heels and pulled Tim Southee between two fielders for four more. A fragile tail, featuring at least three natural number 11s, also cranked up the responsibility on the overnight pairing of Root and Foakes. However, Foakes deserves huge credit for the way he held up his end of the deal. It was Root’s 26th in total, the same as West Indian great Sir Garfield Sobers, but he will be even more satisfied by its importance to the team.

England vs New Zealand: Player ratings as Joe Root joins 10000 ... (iNews)

If this first Test is an indicator of what's to come under McCullum, England fans are in for a ride.

All in his first match since giving up the captaincy. His first fourth-innings century that took him past 10,000 Test runs and won England the game. England were also positive with the bat during their chase – showing intent to keep the strike ticking over and picking off the bad balls. England caught absolutely everything and also made things happen in the field – witness Ollie Pope’s direct hit run out of Colin de Grandhomme on the third morning. Root, though, combined with Stokes and then, crucially, Ben Foakes, to make the decisive contribution. But a brilliant spell from Stuart Broad swung this crazy match once again as the tourists lost their final six second-innings wickets for 34 runs. LORD’S – Rob Key, England’s director of cricket, told everyone to “buckle up and enjoy the ride” after appointing Brendon McCullum as Test coach. What a player, what a match and what a start to the new era. His team, though, went through a deep depression, winning just one match in 17 before this. Stokes set the tone by starting his first match in charge with six slips. That triggered his resignation as captain. But the sweetest moment of all was the match-winning century from Joe Root – his first in a fourth innings of a Test – that saw him become only the 14th player in history to score 10,000 Test runs.
