The Apple Store website is down, which suggests that Apple might also announce new products during the WWDC 2022 event. Apple is working with companies like Ford, Nissan and more to support the next generation of CarPlay and said the next vehicles that support it will start to be announced late next year. You might have heard that WWDC is where we can expect to see some big announcements from Apple, but what does it stand for and what can you see there?

Apple is upgrading to M2 chips, the latest version of the chips which will run future Mac computers. The app can manage access to your device, disable location sharing, or set up an emergency reset of your phone. Ventura, the name of the new macOS, will include Stage Manager, a feature which will let Mac users focus on the app they're using without the clutter. Apple is introducing some updates to the in-car system CarPlay. Among them: upgraded odometers with an Apple aesthetic, widgets providing trip information, navigation tools and weather details. Passkeys can't be leaked or compromised, said Apple. With a Passkey, you can sign up or log in to a service just using the iPhone. Let's say you start a call on the iPhone. If you're near a Mac, it will alert you asking whether you want to continue your call on the Mac. Another incredible feature: the ability to use your iPhone as a really fancy webcam. It's now the iPad's turn, which is also going to get a big update this fall. There will be a new display scaling setting, to adjust the size of an app's view when multitasking or using the split screen feature. All the operating systems will become available to users this fall.

There’s also a new feature called Safety Check, which is aimed to protect people in abusive situations. There’s also a “live activities” feature to display notifications associated with an event like an Uber ride or sporting event in a single tile. Up to six users can access a shared library. SharePlay is also coming to messages. Different focus modes can also be assigned to different lock screens. Apple’s powerful Live Text feature will be coming to video.

And a tool called Passkeys is intended to replace passwords by using Touch ID or Face ID to authenticate across apps and devices. Meanwhile, iOS users in the US will be able to spread payments over 8 weeks on Apple Pay, similar to a "buy now, pay later" service. Apple also teased several new options to better customize the lock screen and improve the notifications experience.

One of the things you look at the most on your iPhone is the Lock Screen, especially if you have a FaceID-equipped iPhone. iOS 16 is the most substantial update to the iPhone's lock screen. Press and hold to edit your lock screen. iOS 16 adds new ways to communicate like being able to edit messages you already sent in the Messages app, new tools to personalize your iPhone like the ability to customize the way your lock screen looks and new automations for sharing like the ability to have shared Photo Libraries with friends. iOS 16 will likely be released this September alongside the heavily rumored iPhone 14 and will be available for the iPhone 8 and later.

Apple says the new M2 chip delivers an 18 percent performance upgrade when compared to the M1. Apple announced a major update to CarPlay that allows for deeper integration with your vehicle. Apple is also introducing the ability to mark a message as unread so you can easily find it later. Apple is also pushing updates to notifications and its Focus feature.

And they will be able to swipe through multiple lock screens, with different looks and functionality for different use cases – a work lock screen could pin emails and mute social media, for instance, while a weekend lock screen could have more casual pictures and hide communications from work. For many, the most important change announced at the event will be for their iPhone lock screens. Apple’s buy now, pay later offering will compete with companies like Klarna and ClearPay by letting users take out an interest-free four-month loan on any payments made using its Apple Pay service.

The Photos experience is adding a new Shared iCloud capability, allowing up to six users to directly upload photos and videos to a shared iCloud with collaborators. Apple worked with several non-profit organizations that support victims of domestic abuse to develop the new Safety Check feature, which will allow users to quickly revoke access to their devices and data when in dangerous situations. Within Apple News, users will be able to follow specific teams and leagues to get their most important sports updates integrated seamlessly into their news feeds. With iOS 16, Maps will be coming to 11 new countries, support more detailed landscapes, increase navigation features, and let users add up to 15 stops to a trip when planning in advance. Apple Wallet is adding more support for verified IDs to be stored in the Wallet, letting you use a stored ID in apps requiring you to upload identification. SharePlay will also be coming to iMessage, letting users watch synced content like movies or songs, share playback controls, and chat in iMessage all at the same time.

Let's be honest, nobody is going to do that, so I went to Apple's MBP M2 page (opens in new tab) and pimped my dream 13-inch MBP M2 out. The latest MacBook Pro will also feature an FHD 1080p webcam which is a nice improvement. The new MacBook Pro with an M2 processor promises improved performance from its 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU. I rather not discuss Apple's promised percentages of improved performance until our crack team of testers gets their hands on the review units.

It’s hard to say whether this will satisfy our long-running gripe about external display support on iPad. During Apple’s demo, Stage Manager made the iPad display look claustrophobic, and we’d like to use all of an external display for one iPad app. The new medications app looks handy, and there are new features for sleep and running tracking. Ish. With iOS 16, Apple’s letting you fiddle with the Lock Screen so you can add a row of tiny widgets. The new MacBook Air (from £1249) gets an M2 chip and looks like a 14in MacBook Pro that’s cut down on carbs. Imagine the M1, only more so (except when it comes to external displays – the M2 still only supports one). The CPU is up to 18% faster. The upcoming OS will debut ‘Continuity Camera’ feature, which will allow users to use iPhone as the webcam on Mac. Another continuity feature is Handoff, which is coming to FaceTime. It will allow users to start a FaceTime call on their iPhone or iPad and fluidly pass it over to their Mac. As for the apps, the watchOS 9 will debut the ‘Medications app’, which is touted by the company as a convenient tool for users to discreetly manage, understand, and track medications. Designed for easy collaboration, the iPadOS 16 will debut Apple’s Freeform app for people to brainstorm together on a flexible canvas. The new lock screen will will allow users to use photos as wallpaper with subject of photos set in front of the time on the lock screen, creating a sense of depth.
