Kirchner was named as the preferred bidder to buy the club by administrators Quantuma in April and the deal was given conditional approval by the EFL last month, but it appears to be in serious doubt two months later.

Chris Kirchner is the man in line to takeover Derby County. The EFL gave him conditional approval to buy the club last month and a May 31st deadline was set.

Derby County’s administration process has been one of the ugliest in English football’s history. End of May was chosen because of scheduling for EFL (released in a few weeks) and everyone collectively didn’t think about the 3 combined bank holidays this week.

Former Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is still interested in saving Derby County from administration, according to the Daily Mail's Craig Hope.

Ashley was said to have been in talks with the administrators back in December, but whilst a deal couldn’t be reached, his team have always expressed an interest in the Rams, and he could return to the party should Kirchner’s deal not go through. Despite Kirchner telling TalkSPORT that he is still attempting to complete the takeover, Ashley is waiting in the wings if things falter. However, funds have yet to be seen in that respect, with the extended bank holiday weekend being blamed last week and that the money Kirchner promised to pay the May wages did not arrive.

Derby County fans have sat patiently waiting for a takeover to be formally announced, but fresh uncertainty means they may have to wait a little longer.

Communication will be key though – because if the administrators can fully explain their reasons to Kirchner for potentially allowing Ashley to make his own bid for the club – that could keep the US businessman reasonably happy and that can only help to maximise the chances of his takeover deal going through. That move may make Kirchner unhappy – but the club has to come before anyone else and this is the reason why Ashley should be given the opportunity to make his own approach – because that could help to save the club. Having Ashley as a security blanket would be ideal and this is why it may be wise to remove the period of exclusivity so the club’s administrators can keep their options open.

Derby County and Chris Kirchner: A day of hope and deliverance (Derbyshire Live)

The exclusivity agreement remains as does the hope of Derby County fans, now is the time for Chris Kirchner to deliver.

But I believe the money is in place, I believe the funding is complex, and I believe a lot more will make sense if and when a deal is announced. I am not putting my head above the parapet to say it will happen, and that is certainly not the official view of the Derby Telegraph and DerbyshireLive, but from discussions and information I've been party to, I know that the intent is there. This is not to say any of those things couldn't still happen, but I trust the intentions of Kirchner, and I believe he is desperate to push through the deal to buy Derby County. I tweeted last night that I expect the deal to progress, despite the widespread rumours of the deal collapsing, exclusivity set to end, and Mike Ashley ready to pounce. Creditors need to be paid, and the administrators have a duty to make that happen and take the club out of administration. Here's a look at the current situation and in particular that day of madness on Wednesday.
