New Royal honour for naturalist Sir David Attenborough (Leicestershire Live)

The Prince of Wales, who is also a committed environmentalist, presented Sir David with the honour at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle this morning.

Spy chief Sir Jeremy Fleming, director of GCHQ, received his knighthood after he was made Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George for services to foreign, Commonwealth and diplomatic services. The Duke of Cambridge highlighted the efforts of “visionary environmentalists” during this section of the show, which saw a clip of Sir David projected on to Buckingham Palace. The Prince of Wales, who is also a committed environmentalist, presented Sir David with the honour at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle this morning.

The broadcaster, 96, was made Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George for services to television broadcasting and to conservation on Wednesday. Gary Lightbody, lead singer of rock band Snow Patrol, was also due to be made an OBE for services to music and to charity in Northern Ireland.

The prestigious Knight Grand Cross was bestowed upon the 96-year-old naturalist by the Prince of Wales, himself a passionate campaigner for the environment.

His first post --— a video warning about climate change — attracted 1 million followers in just 4 hours and 44 minutes. He also has the distinction of being the only person to have won BAFTA awards : "At Windsor Castle, Sir David Attenborough is invested by The Prince of Wales as a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and George. Congratulations Sir David!"

All we lack is unified action.’ In comments carried by the BBC, Sir David used his being named as Champion of the Earth to again urge action to prevent further destruction of the planet. In recent years, Sir David pleaded with politicians and people in power to do everything possible to protect the planet, warning of climate change and mass extinction.

He has now been appointed a higher accolade, a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael And St George, because of his documentaries about the natural world and his campaigning to save it.
