Leicester lineout, Level pegging at scrum-time, so Leicester have to play. "We have put a run together, and that is what we had to do with the position we found ourselves in. A worry for Northampton, now, with Tommy Freeman down after taking a bang to the kneecap. No changes - Leicester down to 14 for the next nine and a half minutes or so. Leicester are beginning to throw some adventurous shapes of their own. Wide to the right and Leicester have the score! 40 bruising minutes at Welford Road, contested with an physicality befitting the occasion with so much at stake. Both of Northampton's props have been replaced, and Joe Heyes is on for Dan Cole on the Leicester tighthead. Back all the way they will come - Northampton scrum in the Leicester 22. All Leicester now. A forward stab is rather aimless, and James Grayson has little option but to ground in his own goal after Leicester return with something longer.

The teams led a minute’s applause for Tiffany Youngs, the wife of former captain Tom, who died from cancer this week. But a lot has changed at Welford Road since Steve Borthwick and his band of lieutenants led by Aled Walters and Kevin Sinfield got a grip on the place. But it was Leicester who had something on their plate when centre Kelly, out since mid-April with hamstring trouble, limped off after two minutes. Biggar pointed to the posts and put Saints 3-0 ahead from just inside Leicester’s half, and that lead could have been extended but for the TMO with 12 minutes on the clock. Leicester Tigers 27 Northampton Saints 14: Tom Vickers' review and ... (Northampton Chronicle and Echo)

Sometimes to experience the highs you have to sample the lows - just ask the Saints team of 2013/14.

He was at it again here, flying forward and taking no prisoners, but his effort didn't result in the win his performances have merited... OISIN HEFFERNAN (for Painter 53) – wasn't on the field for long before he was hit with a yellow card for a seatbelt tackle. Couldn't quite get the control he wanted in the game and made an error or two under pressure... COURTNALL SKOSAN – not the day the wing would have dreamed of as chances came and went for him. LEWIS LUDLAM – what a season the skipper has had! It was no more than a penalty... ALEX MITCHELL – thought he had scored during the first half but saw his effort chalked off. But he did largely do well under the high ball... MANNY IYOGUN – continues to look like a huge prospect and this experience will do him the world of good as he took on Dan Cole in the heat of a derby-day knockout clash and didn't look fazed... It is very rare that a team just comes from where Tigers have - they finished sixth, a place below Saints, last season - and wins it in their first season back in the top four. It was just that in some of the key moments of the match, occasional panic set in and they either came up short or they were cruelly denied. Saints had lost Premiership play-off semi-finals to Saracens, Leicester and Harlequins, they had lost a Premiership final to Tigers and a Heineken Cup final to Leinster.
