There's a man terrorising locals with a bow and arrow (just in case you forgot we were in Nottingham) – as depicted in the trailer – but there's a deliberate lack of urgency. The performances are solid, with Manville (unsurprisingly) the standout, and the dialogue authentic. Those who crossed the picket lines were labelled "scabs", a word Gary Jackson (Alun Armstrong), an ex-miner and National Union of Mineworkers member, spits at those he considers traitors.

When Gary is found dead in the street, killed by a crossbow bolt, the most immediate person of interest to the investigating officer – local boy made good (“Now I live on the outskirts of the village”) Ian St Clair (David Morrissey) – is “scab” Dean (Sean Gilder), with whom Gary had often and recently argued. Without sacrificing story or suspense, and never paying less than meticulous attention to teasing out the knotty mass of relationships and the ramifications playing out around the village, Sherwood builds slowly – layer by subtle, evocative layer – into a magisterial state-of-the-nation piece. It’s even funny – because it’s about people and because it has made those people real and because real people are, forever, even in their darkest moments, funny. Alun Armstrong plays Gary Jackson, a National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) stalwart in a village dominated by the Union of Democratic Mineworkers (UDM), who, let’s say, took a softer stance on striking and the privatisation of the coal industry. It is the drama equivalent of bowling a strike: a writer knowing the setting and themes in his bones, a dream cast drawn to the richly allusive resulting script, each of those actors doing their best work in years (which, given the standards that Manville, Morrissey, Armstrong et al maintain is quite something to watch) and their chemistry, with beautiful direction from Lewis Arnold and Ben A Williams, creating something even greater than the sum of its superb parts. Morrissey and Glenister are serviceable as this detecting odd couple, but it is the local cast that brings together an extraordinary array of acting talent. But the area has a deep memory, and crimes of the past have not been forgotten. When the whiff of Robin Hood starts to appear during St Clair’s investigation, his deputy Cleaver (Corrie’s Terence Maynard) observes: “The boss hates that kind of thing. When Gary muttered “scab”, Deano snapped and threw a pool ball at him. A potent reminder of the way lifelong neighbours were divided by the strike – and of how those faultlines persist decades later. The vibe was warmer at the house of Julie Jackson (Lesley Manville), one of Neel’s staff. As Gary tottered home from the “clubby”, he seemed to be stalked by a hooded figure. Husband Gary (Alun Armstrong) was a proud National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) member and one of the few locals to keep solidarity on the picket line back in 1984. In the closeknit community of Ashfield, Tory council candidate Sarah Vincent (Joanne Froggatt) was marrying building society manager Neel (Bally Gill).
