Lightyear (2022) review – a less than stellar Toy Story spin-off (The Digital Fix)

Lightyear is a perfectly fine Toy Story spin-off. Some individual elements work, some don't, but the whole thing fails to become a cohesive whole.

While the characterisation of some of the supporting characters leaves a little to be desired, Buzz himself is pretty well fleshed out and is a flawed but likeable guy. He’s just a little too mission focussed, and while you can see the revelation that he needs to rely more on his team coming from a mile off, Evans does a decent enough job selling you on the turn. There is no doubt that Lightyear is a gorgeous-looking movie, and the talented cast manages to infuse the characters with some life. After all, it’s meant to be a pastiche of some of the best science fiction movies ever made, like Star Wars, Interstellar, and 2001: A Space Oddysey. What’s becoming clear, however, is that the studio that was once synonymous with some of the best movies ever made does indeed make ‘fine’ films. However, I slowly came round to the idea – helped in part by the trailer that featured David Bowie crooning, a decent helping of Toy Story-based nostalgia, and some truly out-of-this-world visuals.

Film reviews: Lightyear | Good Luck to You, Leo Grande | Jurassic ... (The Scotsman)

Pixar's Buzz Lightyear origins story might not feel all that original, but it's still made with typical Pixar brio, writes Alistair Harkness.

But as the characters get more intimate, so too does the film, with McCormack and, especially, Thompson cutting through the film’s more mechanical execution to deliver rounded portraits of people yearning for human connection in a judgmental world. Her gigolo of choice is about as far as it’s possible to get from the sleazy, damaged hustler familiar from Jon Voight’s turn in Midnight Cowboy though. Though this echoes the ingenious plot-twist of Toy Story 2 – in which Woody the cowboy realised he was a spin-off from an old western TV show – that’s about all the meta-fun on offer: the film never grapples with why this movie would have animation or effects work lightyears ahead of anything seen in a mid-1990s Disney film.

'Lightyear' review: Dir. Angus MacLane (2022) (The Hollywood News)

As the opening text for Lightyear, Pixar's Toy Story prequel reveals, “in 1995 Andy got a toy. The toy was from his favourite movie. This is that movie”.

It’s a fun adventure that riffs on the very best sci-fi has to offer making it a solid, albeit not entirely necessary, companion piece to the Toy Story films. While it’s far from Pixar’s best effort to date, it’s another strong outing from the studio that continues their impressive track record of successes following on from the likes of Soul, Luca, and Turning Red. The action is thrilling while the flight sequences are genuinely awe-inspiring – the visuals are jaw-dropping and bring a real magic to it all but we’d expect nothing less from such genre veterans. And the film even manages to cook up a few surprises with Zurg! But the promise of a classic, sci-fi spectacle such as that one is bold for the following 107 minutes to fulfil. The nihilism of space is always interesting narrative work and, for the brief scenes we see Buzz grappling with his own morality, the film really has a unique place within the Pixar canon. Thankfully though, in the capable hands of the House of Mouse and director Angus MacLane, Lightyear does a good job of filling those shoes.

Review: Pixar's 'Lightyear' is no 'Toy Story' (Houston Chronicle)

The offshoot of the 'Toy Story' franchise lacks the charm and spark of its predecessors.

Ultimately, the people who made “Lightyear” bet too much on the appeal of Buzz, when they really needed to be deepening him and transforming him. If you were to tell the entire plot of “Lightyear,” it would take you longer to describe the first 20 minutes than it would to explain the remaining 80. That movie was “Lightyear,” so the idea is that we’re seeing what Andy saw back in the day — which if true, would place “Lightyear,” retroactively, among the worst movies of 1995. But having blasted through 60 or 70 years, “Lightyear” blows itself out, so that very early in the film we’re left with a shallow, one-joke protagonist who is completely without any emotional ties. Buzz goes up in space, doesn’t succeed and wants to go back and try the same maneuver again immediately. In an opening scroll, we’re told that in 1995, Andy — the boy from “Toy Story” — was inspired to get the Buzz Lightyear toy because he saw a movie about him.

'Lightyear' Review: Infinite Buzz (The New York Times)

The new Pixar movie recounts the adventures of Star Command's most famous Space Ranger before he was a toy.

An early section — a kind of extended prologue to the main action — recalls the celebrated montage in “Up” that compresses a long marriage into a few short minutes. If “Lightyear” lacks both the sublimity and the giddy inventiveness of the best “Toy Story” movies, that may be by design. A few soft-boiled Easter eggs pop up to connect “Lightyear” with various “Toy Story” episodes. He isn’t a toy, and he doesn’t sound like Tim Allen, who did the voice work in the four chapters of Pixar’s “Toy Story” cycle. More than one hard plastic Buzz Lightyear lived in my house for a long time, just like in Andy’s. To be part of the “Toy Story” universe is to be intimately acquainted with the metaphysics of the commodity form. This is that movie.” In other words, it’s the origin story not of a hero but of a piece of merchandise, one that started out fictional but long ago crossed the boundary into real life.

What’s compelling “Lightyear” is harder to say, but there is a bland, vaguely “Planes” feeling here that smacks of a straight-to-video spinoff. But “Lightyear,” helmed by “Finding Dory” co-director Angus MacLane (who made some of the “Toy Story” shorts and TV specials that have expanded the film series), arrives in theaters just as summer movies are reaching the stratosphere again. “Lightyear” isn’t ambitious or existential or likely to make you cry. So should “Lightyear” have been a feature film or a Pixar short? It isn’t a prequel to “Toy Story,” exactly, but instead presents the movie that inspired Buzz Lightyear toys in the first place. So begins “Lightyear,” a new Pixar release that takes a meta approach to the animation studio’s flagship franchise.

After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. This fragile balance will reshape the future and determine, once and for all, whether human beings are to remain the apex predators on a planet they now share with history’s most fearsome creatures. Jurassic World Dominion is directed by Colin Trevorrow, who steered 2015’s Jurassic World to a record-shattering $1.7 billion global box office. Chris Evans lends his voice to Buzz. “The phrase ‘a dream come true’ gets thrown around a lot, but I’ve never meant it more in my life,” says Evans. “Anyone who knows me knows that my love for animated films runs deep. Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a thrilling ride through the multiverse with Doctor Strange, his trusted friend Wong and Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch. Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it. Dinosaurs now live – and hunt – alongside humans all over the world. The screenplay is by Emily Carmichael ( Battle at Big Rock) and Colin Trevorrow from a story by Derek Connolly ( Jurassic World) and Trevorrow, based on characters created by Michael Crichton. I can’t believe that I get to be a part of the Pixar family and work with these truly brilliant artists who tell stories unlike anyone else.
