Racegoers fill stands as Queen misses first day of 'thrilling' Royal ... (Redditch Advertiser)

Punters are hoping that the monarch, a passionate racehorse owner and breeder, will make an appearance at the event this week.

Royal Ascot is as much a social occasion as a sporting event and female racegoers wore summer dresses and flamboyant hats while the men sported top hats and tails or smart suits. The Queen hailed Royal Ascot as a “thrilling” experience as racegoers filled the stands for the first time since the pandemic. “Once again, it is thrilling that horses from around the globe have travelled to Royal Ascot to compete at the highest level.”

ROYAL ASCOT is finally here - and the weather is perfect for what looks set to be a blockbuster week of action.Stick with us here for ALL of the lates.

“Baaeed is rated about 15lb below him and has only won half as many races. The 2/7 odds you could get on him a few days ago have disappeared and he's now around 1/6 to get the week off to a flyer. "In total, we've laid £60,000 on the Coroebus and Baaeed double." Nothing ventured..." While some big money has also been splashed on the big double of the day with Baaeed and Coroebus. Baaeed is so straightforward to train, he’s relaxed at home and on the gallops and it’s easy. He was 6/4 a couple of days ago and is now 4/6 ahead of the first race. "My hope kept on well when fourth in the Dewhurst and when fifth in the 2000 Guineas. Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall in Carriage 1 as the crowd cheers them into the paddock. Everyone is waiting for Baaeed to crush the Queen Anna Stakes field in the opener - Frankel-style. ROYAL ASCOT is finally here - and the weather is perfect for what looks set to be a blockbuster week of action. He toldBetfair: "I think we all know that Baaeed is highly likely to win this, and win this well, but we would all be in a sorry place if we accepted defeat before any race, particularly a Group 1 on the biggest stage.

Royal Ascot 2022: live results and latest updates for Day 1 race (Telegraph.co.uk)

There's a discussion on ITV that the Queen will hopefully make it to Ascot on Thursday, for the Gold Cup.

His jockey, Irad Ortiz Jr, is the best in the US but this is his Ascot debut and he will have to adapt quickly. Nature Strip has lost at short odds on a few occasions and there is a feeling not only that it needs to fall right for him these days but that Covid caused him to miss the boat for this trip when he was at his imperious best two years ago. It would be the shock of the summer were he to lose his unbeaten tag. But the King’s Stand is no foregone conclusion; so often when a race is billed as a match, something else turns up to spoil the tea and scones for two. But for as many who have won, plenty of others have got to the furlong pole, taken a deep breath and started treading water. A spokesman for Ascot said: “We’re prepared, which is why it is included in the schedule of events. The Queen is hoping to have about 10 runners this week starting with Kings Lynn in the King’s Palace Stakes (3.40) today. Home-trained horses would appear to be there only to pick up the pieces should the two international guests go too fast and cut each other’s throats – a not-impossible scenario. If you want to know why then take a look at how the four-year-old, and top-rated horse in the world, won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes last year. It has become a major part of the meeting’s pomp and pageantry. This year’s Royal Ascot begins with a bang as unbeaten four-year-old colt BAAEED bids to cement his claim as the best racehorse in the world and win his fourth consecutive Group 1 contest. It has, nevertheless, been included in the racecard’s time table of events for 2.00, as usual, every day.

The podium horses from the Lockinge once again enter the picture when it comes to the minor medals, but Order Of Australia is capable of running above his odds. Betfred spokesman Matt Hulmes said: “There has been brisk business on the first morning of Royal Ascot, with Juan De Montalban in the lucky last the best-backed horse of the day, halving in price from yesterday’s 8/1. “There are also the romantics amongst us who have latched onto King’s Lynn, wishing for a winner for Her Majesty The Queen this afternoon. Royal Ascot: St James's Palace Stakes and more on day one – live! (The Guardian)

Royal Procession Stakes (2pm) ... and here are the runners and riders ... 1st Carriage The Prince of Wales The Duchess of Cornwall Mr. Peter ...

Baaeed’s current Timeform mark is 134, thanks to a ruthless dismantling of his field in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury last month, which is none too shabby, but also shows the gap that will need to be bridged if he is to even approach Frankel’s unprecedented standard. The best place to get all the news, results and reactions will be right here on the blog, so keep refreshing, folks. Coroebus, the 2,000 Guineas winner, attempts to back up his Classic-winning form in the St James’s Palace Stakes at 4.20, while the two-and-a-half mile Ascot Stakes Handicap will see several of jump racing’s leading names, including Willie Mullins, Gordon Elliott and Dan Skelton, attempting to stick it to their Flat-based counterparts. Anyway, it’s the first opening day at the Royal meeting for three years with no Covid restrictions to reduce or, indeed, lock out the crowd altogether, which is a thought to lift the spirits of racing fans everywhere despite everything else that’s going on in the world. The Queen is a doubtful runner at Ascot given her mobility issues and is expected to arrive by car if she does attend the first day. The official going for day one of Royal Ascot is Good to Firm, Good in places. Appropriately for an event whose media coverage focuses on the parade of hats and dresses rather than the sport, here we have a close-up on clothes, on the Queen’s dolly mixture of pinks, tangerines, limes; the difference from day to day is barely discernible, just as the four BBC commentaries merge in a confused blather. It’s fast out there and with a “Scorchio” forecast for the next few days it can only get quicker. A spokesperson said: “With the announcement that the Queen won’t be attending the first day of Royal Ascot, many punters are disappointed as the Queen’s Hat betting market has become one of the public’s favourite fun bets. Jack Keane at the Sun wrote an article in which he asked “you have to wonder how seriously Murphy is taking his recovery. We asked a leading bookmaker for the odds on who will be the next member of the royal family to take on the ‘hat bets’ mantle and they went: 1-4 Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, 2-1 Anne, Princess Royal, 6-1 Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, 12-1 Zara Phillips and 18-1 Sophie, Duchess of Wessex.” Oisin Murphy is everywhere ... but on a horse!

Although she has failed to fire since that day, she remains a backable each-way price in the hope she can bounce back to form. Instead, the daughter of Awtaad waited for the Falmouth Stakes where she recorded a career-best effort, beaten a length and a half into fifth. The Duke Of Cambridge (4:20) is undoubtedly a tricky contest, with Saffron Beach and Mother Earth vying for favouritism. John & Thady Gosden brought Palace Pier here on the back of a handicap and Mighty Ulysses demands a close watch for the same yard. His second outing at Newbury cemented his position towards the top of the Coventry market, showing a professional attitude to dismiss his two rivals.

Royal Ascot 2022 tips and best bets for day two (Telegraph.co.uk)

Our guide to the second day, including runners and riders for the Prince Of Wales's Stakes.

Farhh To Shy has done precious little wrong in her career thus far, having won four of her eight career starts; she can give the selection the most to think about. STATE OCCASION looks to have been lightly campaigned so far this season with this race in mind and she can reward the patience of her connections with victory here. She is a most consistent filly, having finished out of the first three just once in her nine-race career. She is a Group 3 winner already this term and is taken to bounce right back from a rare below-par effort in the Lockinge Stakes last time out, with the first-time cheekpieces sure to help her. Conversely, there look to be few ground queries for SHAHRYAR, a dual Group 1 winner and a top-class colt in his own right; he can take the beating in this fascinating heat. He has long been well-regarded by his powerful connections and ran an excellent race in defeat on debut over six furlongs prior to routing eight rivals last month when dropped to the minimum distance. He could not make an impact that day but he stayed on all the way to the line and, in significantly calmer waters, he can prove the one they all have to beat as he tackles a 1m6f trip that he should relish. He looks a Stakes performer in the making and can prove very hard to beat here. Nevertheless, he started making up for lost time by routing four rivals by upwards of four lengths at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting; the third and fourth have both win since, giving substance to the form. The vibes have been very strong for LOVE REIGNS leading into this race and, such is Wesley Ward’s extraordinarily strong record in the Queen Mary, it would be folly to desert his sole representative, who looked a filly of Group 1 potential in winning her only start. Top-class mare who is unbeaten in two starts this year. Fantastic line-up for this year’s Queen Mary, with over half the field bringing forward unbeaten records.

Baaeed oozed class in winning the Queen Anne Stakes, the opening race of Royal Ascot 2022, while Coroebus won the St James's Palace Stakes.

He showed an exceptional turn of foot to get within half a length of Coroebus at the line, but that was only enough for fourth place behind Lusail and My Prospero. The only way I can explain the feeling is when you go to the funfair and you’re waiting in the queue for a fast ride, that’s the feeling before you get on him.” “He travels well and settles well [and] that is a really important part if we are going to go further,” Haggas said. Frankel went to Goodwood first, though, and Baaeed could well do the same. Like Frankel in the same contest 10 years earlier, Baaeed opened the meeting with a ruthless defence of his unbeaten record at long odds-on. No one, though, will want to miss his next start if, as seems likely, he takes on Coroebus, the winner of the afternoon’s St James’s Palace Stakes, in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood next month.

There were high expectations for Dark Shift at this time last season after three good runs in 6f novice company and he did not initially live up to them. Day two of Royal Ascot doesn’t feature any short-priced good things and it looks a tough punting card. Although she was beaten off today’s mark in another massive field at the Curragh last time, this filly has clearly improved for the move to Joseph O’Brien and I fancy her to get back on the winning trail.

Royal Ascot day two: Stoute has no ground concerns for Bay Bridge (Racing TV)

Sir Michael Stoute believes quick ground will not be a problem as Bay Bridge bids to take his winning spree to six in Wednesday's Prince of Wales's Stakes.

It was nice that he is available to ride as well, knowing the filly. It is a great thrill when those breeze-ups come off and you can run them two or three weeks later and win as impressively as she did. I like Bay Bridge – he has always been a lovely horse and, to me, he could be better than the rest.” “As a horseman, I want to win races in the UK with Japanese horses. He added: “Her figures for her first run at Newmarket were pretty good and I’m adamant and convinced she’s come on from that. It’s going to be a fascinating race and we are looking forward to it.” Every horse that kind of engaged her, she just exploded away from them.” “She looks in great shape. He seems in fine shape and I don’t think fast ground will be a problem. “We’ve had no issues at all. “Our fella is a grand horse and I think he needs to be ridden a little differently compared to the Tattersalls Gold Cup, when he sat too close to the pace. “I think it is going to be a fabulous race, as it should be.

Going one better will be a challenge in what feels an open race with State Occasion and last year’s runner-up Ffion also looking likely to be amongst the front-runners in this one. Confidence will be enhanced with Aidan O’Brien on board after he rode Southern Hills and Washington DC to wins in this race over the last six years but Bolt Action and Chateau will offer a threat. A narrow win as a 13/8 favourite in the All Weather Championships Mile Handicap at Newcastle in March caught the eye, and a third placed finish on a return to the North East in April could enhance the belief an each-way gamble is the way forward. A three-length revenge win over Mother Earth on a return to Newmarket in the Sun Chariot Stakes last October showed quality and and fourth-placed finish at Dubai Turf in Mayden in March continued some momentum. A narrow win in the Dubai Sheema Classic at Meydan and will hope to make the most of the quick ground. After a slow start to a debut race at Newmarket in April, favourite Dramatised went on to see off William Buick’s Malrescia and 3/1 second favourite Chassaral. Daniel Tudhope was on board that day and he will hope to replicate that promising start with a second win.

Improving stayer Coltrane made Tueaday a day to remember for young jockey Callum Hutchinson as he secured his first win at Royal Ascot.

I’m very proud of the jockey and very proud of the horse. “Unfortunately, at the end of Coltrane’s three-year-old career he had quite a nasty injury, and he’s still got a plate and some screws. Trainer Mullins labelled jockey Ryan Moore’s ride of Bring On The Night as ‘fabulous’ but conceded the combination of Hutchinson and Coltrane was too much. “He is a big yard legend and I’ve ridden him a fair bit at home. The horse got me out of trouble two out, he got through the gap nicely and quickened away there. He’s been great to me, and I’ve been kicking on throughout the year.

He lost all chance early on in the Derby but powered home in the final two furlongs to finish a staying-on seventh. I wouldn't put anyone off having an each-way play with Sky Bet paying five places but Eldar Eldarov has a stack of potential for Roger Varian and is feared. A set of results that outperforms the market expectation to those with just one run to their name. I'd have it closer to 70 per cent. So, she should be taken on in a race ripe for an each-way play as just eight run. On her first run of the season, she is so vulnerable against some quality opposition here.

Royal Ascot 2022: Prince of Wales's Stakes and more on day two ... (The Guardian)

Rebel Territory, who was set to run in the Royal Hunt Cup at 5pm, is the latest non-runner, a very frustrating exit for the horses's trainer Amanda Perrett.

All five runners, though, will go to post with a realistic chance, and it promises to be a fine highlight despite the lack of numbers. That works out as £200,000 per runner in the Prince of Wales’s Stakes, but what the feature event lacks in numbers, it makes up for in quality and variety. The farside is just a bit quicker on the straight but not much in it. The Ascot clerk of the course Chris Stickels has just been on Sky Sports Racing and said: “We’ve put 4mm of watering on the track to maintain the moisture. We still have a dry forecast for the next couple of days and then we’re not sure what is going to happen on Saturday. There are one or two forecasts of thunderstorms.” Sir Michael Stoute’s colt was odds-against at 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon but there has been plenty of cash for him this morning and you will now struggle to beat 10-11. I do like the idea of these horses self-certificating ... It’s almost that time again ... the royal procession down the track is back at about 2pm (after being seen for the first time since 2019 yesterday) and we can expect the details of who will be in it at midday. Keene himself says it’s time to ditch the procession. Or maybe just the photo-shopped Royal Ascot topper?! Don’t put these on your betting slips. The point Wallinger was making is that the difference from day to day was barely discernible but what was different yesterday, a point made by former Racing Post editor Bruce Millington and by Jack Keene in the Sun, was that the procession passed by “in total silence, with none of the usual rapturous applause and cheers.” The Queen’s passing will clearly mark a major shift in support for the monarchy.

After an Australian winner on day one, there could be more international success at Royal Ascot on Wednesday.

The way he stayed on for seventh impressed, it's just a case of whether this ideal race comes too soon. Haziya certainly has the profile of a progressive filly, more that capable of taking on this field. Aidan O'Brien, the ten-time leading trainer at the meeting, was without a first day winner but in addition to Mother Earth fires another of his talented two year-olds, LITTLE BIG BEAR , at the Windsor Castle Stakes (5.35pm). And they've got high hopes for this classy colt at Ballydoyle. There are seasoned punters with decades of Ascot experience who haven't picked a winner in in the 30-runner Royal Hunt Cup (5.00pm). She won on her first start for the trainer at Leopardstown but shot up in the weights for her next engagement at The Curragh, where she finished just behind the winner in third. She was outclassed in the group one Lockinge Stakes at Newbury but drops back in class to take on her own here and is a two-time Group One winner.

Royal Ascot tips: Simon Rowlands backing Bay Bridge to make ... (Sky Sports)

Bay Bridge is a warm favourite to overcome four rivals in Group One Prince Of Waless Stakes at Royal Ascot on Wednesday; Wes Wards Love Reigns set to star ...

Little Big Bear (drawn in two) is probably the "right" favourite but a few others are not far behind him on form. The Windsor Castle Stakes (5.35) could be draw/pace-dependent, given there are 24 youngsters declared in it at various stages of development. Rebel Territory looks worth a small each-way punt at bigger, however, after his win on that same Sandown card as Bay Bridge and in a notably useful overall time. Bay Bridge can go from near the front, and he can come from behind. I initially wondered if Bay Bridge really was value for all of his wins: he was, and quite a bit more besides, too! I have just one of the five rated above 120 and up to the standard usually required to win this prestigious contest.

Jockey Hollie Doyle claimed her third race winner at Ascot on day one aboard Bradsell in the Coventry Stakes.

The Prince of Wales' Stakes is a good test for him, however. If goodwill won races then the Queen's Perfect Alibi, who should relish the step up in trip to a mile and three quarters, a distance her dam, Daphne, won over. "He is a beautiful, big horse, a very good mover and a lovely character, but a lot of those Aga Khan families are slow developers. The favourite from today's odds is Bay Bridge but the card is full of horses who will make it a thrilling race. "I've had horses with Michael for 40 years so I'm used to his way," explained Wigan. "He never says much but if he says 'we like him' I'm very happy and I know he has liked him for a long time. Indeed, it is only because we have such high expectations of Stoute that we expect him to have half-a-dozen Group One winners a year.
