His first wife Linda died in 1998 and he went on to marry Heather Mills in 2002. In 2018, he wrote the children’s book Hey Grandude! together with illustrator Kathryn Durst, about a grandfather and his three grandchildren with a magic compass on an adventure. In “The Back Seat of My Car,” the admixture of lyrical banality and orchestral grandeur results in a uniquely hysterical product. Co-writer and uncredited co-producer Eric Stewart of 10cc: “It was ghastly, it was ghastly, and I really felt very sorry that I’d got myself involved…” Because the memory of programming syndrums haunts ’60s casualties like a bad trip, few decent reappraisals of a typically hit-and-miss McCartney album have appeared. No “ Band On The Run,” “ Silly Love Songs,” or “ Ebony And Ivory,” tunes that range from the sublime to the execrable and not part of my McCartney canon. A nimble acoustic-based hook and a straightforward lyric turn “Every Night” into one of the album’s most realized performances. It’s McCartney’s vocal that turns “No Other Baby” into one of the decade’s bleakest depictions of derangement. The odd stresses (“If ya’d taken an ar-rah/ And put it right through me!”) and the after-midnight glow of Linda and Denny Laine’s harmonies suggest an acquaintance with Michael McDonald’s recent Doobie Brothers work. However, it still sounds ungainly, with hits like “ Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey” striving for the “Beatlesque” without purpose: an adjective in search of a noun. And McCartney, singing at the top of his range, sounds jazzed, hoping listeners “feel the sense of childlike wonder.” For decades the possibilities of the pop song has been this religious agnostic’s only faith. In the days of mixtapes and CD burning, Paul McCartney was one of those acts like the Fall and Wu-Tang Clan whose immense catalog concealed overlooked corners and underused trails the former Beatle himself had no interest in mentioning.

Forget about the astute narration (barbershops, bankers and roundabouts). Don’t even pay much attention to the heavenly pop melody. Yes. Indicative of McCartney’s desire to stay on the charts (i.e., commercial)? Sure. But it’s also unfairly maligned because Macca is completely in on the ridiculously catchy joke. The original is a gratifying valentine. At just over two minutes, the mostly instrumental platform would barely be a blip for most bands. Part of McCartney’s new wave/disco phase of the times that initially included sped-up vocals. Between the intricate guitar work from George Harrison and Lennon and a set of double-tracked vocals, a new sound in 1960s British pop was born. Songs that he wrote that became hits for others (such as Badfinger’s "Come and Get It" and Elvis Costello’s “Veronica”) weren’t included. As in, that is an insane amount of foresight, even for this guy. Noteworthy because it’s McCartney’s debut single following the Beatles’ breakup in 1970, and was therefore instantly dissected with microscopic precision. While his voice might have more warble to it, his ability to turn the bucolic into something infinitely listenable is still formidable. But – and this is why it squeaked onto the list – it can be considered a bold zigzag that, in retrospect, is at least interesting. But it’s hard to fault McCartney’s intentions – or the song’s easily digestible tunefulness.

We're celebrating the Paul McCartney at 80 by looking back at the life, times and music he has produced from The Beatles to Ram and 'Here Today'.

Many musicians and fans will be sharing in that sentiment as his long and winding life arrives at 80 and the forthcoming ‘na na na nas’ at Glastonbury that seem so fitting in hopefully paving a way to a brighter future. But above all, people will be celebrating the man himself, and that is the true mark of his story to date. Here Today: Throughout the ‘70s, McCartney might have been a man on the run, but the undertow of his legacy was always there, and he was tragically forced to redress it when Lennon was murdered. On his first record since his passing, McCartney penned the song ‘Here Today’ which included the line, “What about the night we cried”. Later, he spoke about the being holed up in Key West, Florida in ’64 as a hurricane raged outside: “It was during that night, when we’d all stayed up way too late, and we got so pissed that we ended up crying—about, you know, how wonderful we were, and how much we loved each other, even though we’d never said anything. During times of trouble, the former Beatle recalled, “the lightbulb went off one day when we realised that we could just run away.” With that epiphany, McCartney allowed himself to recline into the fruits of his honest toil and the justly paid dues and basked in the harvest of munificent concessions. Proving himself as a solo act, in the same way that Michael Phelps might prove himself to be a viable lifeguard, he sunk into family life with Linda McCartney and his daughter Mary and entered a new chapter. And during a low point in 1970, McCartney went into a little room with the set-up “like a professor in his laboratory” and produced ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ whereby he shouted and screamed a melodic gem that may well be his greatest performance on record. Maybe I’m Amazed: In the aftermath, McCartney was quietly struggling to come to terms with the breakup of The Beatles. He later told his daughter, Mary: “I nearly had a breakdown. The boy was John Lennon, and he was about to play a second set of the day with the Quarrymen, when their tea-chest bass player Ivan Vaughan, introduced him to his classmate ‘Macca’. When Vaughan passed away in 1993, it prompted McCartney to start writing poetry again. 12 years later, McCartney would recall, “I had a dream in the sixties, where my mum who died came to me in a dream and was reassuring me saying: It’s going to be okay. At the time, that wasn’t far from one in 16 people on the entire planet receiving a message of unified peace in one fell swoop of sonic beauty.
