He is a leader and I do believe that Man United is lacking leaders. I do believe that Man United is going to be the place where he can develop and also help Man United get back to where they belong. The access that supporters had to Arnold is unprecedented in United's modern history. Arnold bought 'a few beers' for the supporters and he sat down to speak at length about matters regarding the club. The anger at the Glazers' ownership has risen again and Arnold is now the most visible target. Arnold said all the right things on a conference call with investors in March, expressing his disappointment at the season as he discussed the club's long-term strategy. Murtough now has responsibility for transfers and Arnold deserves credit for that decision, though the jury is still out on United's inaugural football director. It seemed like United had appointed yet another Woodward. Arnold had to prove he was different to his predecessor, but he was immediately fighting a losing battle considering his history.

Neville was right about the challenges ahead, but at least the new Manchester United chief is aware of the reality. During Woodward's 10-year tenure, United went on to spend £1billion on players - more than any other club in Europe. "But I also think it is important that they appoint a sporting director and a new manager, obviously, in the summer which is going to happen. I think it is fair that Richard should get an amount of time - two or three years - to be able to build a club in his own identity. "There is an element of obviously giving Richard Arnold time to be able to assess the situation - but it is very fast at Manchester United; there are a lot of things happening all the time. Speaking after his appointment this year, Neville admitted that time will be needed for Arnold to put his own stamp of authority in order to take the club forward.
