People in the North East will be able to enjoy over 17 hours of daylight on the Summer Solstice.

The shortest day of the year is not until December 21, which is known as the Winter Solstice. Astrologers say the sun seems to 'stand still' at the point on the horizon where it appears to rise and set, before moving off in the reverse direction. The longest day of the year falls on Tuesday, June 21, this year, the same day as in 2021.

Many people also visit Stonehenge on the summer solstice to see the sun rise at the heritage site. The rising sun only reaches the middle of the stones on one day of the year, when it shines on the central altar. This is also the reason many people would traditionally get married in June, and why it is still a popular month for weddings. The Pagan festival of Litha also starts on the eve of the summer solstice, and celebrates the midsummer and the power of the sun god. The exact moment of the solstice is when the Earth is closest to the sun and this year it is due to fall on 21 June. The start of the sunny season is officially marked by the summer solstice, otherwise known as the longest day of the year, which signals the start of brighter evenings.

Summer Solstice is known as Litha by the modern pagan community - so what is the significance of this event? Is it also Midsummer's Day?

Those wishing to celebrate the solstice will be able to access Stonehenge from 7pm on June 20 for observing the sunset and the next day's sunrise. But since solstice is supposed to be the start of summer, how can it also be midsummer? Summer solstice is always between June 20 and 22 for those in the northern hemisphere. But Litha is a Saxon word and not what the original druids - the priests of the ancient Celts - called the solstice. The moment of the solstice is at 10.13am UK British Summer Time. That is when the sun is at its highest position in the sky, reaching the most northernmost point of the year. The pits are lined up with midsummer sunrise and sunset when viewed from the Heel Stone. So the Arctic circle at the top of the northern hemisphere experiences Midnight Sun or polar day, where there is continuous daylight at the summer solstice and the sun never sets. People have been celebrating the summer solstice since prehistoric times. This year, the summer solstice is on Tuesday, June 21, when the UK will get, on average, 16 hours and 37 minutes of daylight. If it's near the beginning of the night, the day that has just passed will be the longest. If it's near the end, the next day will be the longest. This exact astronomical turning point is the same wherever you are in the world.

Summer solstice 2021 is arriving. Take a look at the more sensual traditions surrounding the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

The United Nations' theme for 2022 is "Yoga for Humanity" and touts the practice as a great method for overcoming the effects of the pandemic. Like many other events in 2020-21, they had to close it down because of the pandemic. In fact, the International Day of Yoga is June 21, the same day as the solstice. According to Polish folklore, the man and woman in question would become a couple. Later in the day, the sexes mingle and take turns jumping over a bonfire. Plus, all the men like to show off and make the biggest fire they can to jump through." Residents of the Southern Hemisphere -- in places such as Argentina, South Africa and New Zealand -- are about to welcome three months of winter. These days, however, the festival is more an excuse for the community of women to exchange bawdy jokes. But the amount of sunlight we get in the Northern Hemisphere has been increasing daily ever since. "As Earth orbits the sun [once each year], its tilted axis always points in the same direction. Some areas of the UK will see around 19 hours of daylight on the summer solstice, which marks the longest day of the year.

Here’s how long the longest day of the year will actually be, and how you can watch the sun rising at the stone circle online. The summer solstice marks the date of the longest period of daylight and the shortest night of the year, when the Earth’s north pole has its maximum tilt towards the sun. Equinoxes get their name from the Latin for “equal night”, and mark the only two points in the year when the equator is the closest part of Earth to the sun. That may sound a lot, but more northerly areas of the UK see an even longer day – Inverness, for example, will get more than 18 hours of daylight, with the sun rising at 4.17am and setting at 10.19pm. The longest day of the year is known as the summer solstice, and has been celebrated across the world in some form since prehistory. This year, the solstice falls on Tuesday 21 June in the northern hemisphere, with large groups of revellers set to watch the sunrise at Stonehenge as per tradition.

In ancient history, the sun and moon were used as a calendar and marked the time between the planting and harvesting of crops. It is a time of celebration and reflection. It marks exactly halfway through the year, and in between the two equinoxes. Here in the northern hemisphere, it is also the start of the nights very gradually (barely noticeable) getting longer as we move towards winter (ah, don’t want to think about that yet). The sun is at its very peak and directly above the Tropic of Cancer (which is just above the equator).
