Halo TV series review: a rare show that may appease newcomers more than long-time fans on Paramount Plus · Halo's jump to TV is a solid showing, albeit one that ...

Halo the series isn’t a bad show, far from it. Riding that wave of momentum, Halo hopes to be the next gaming behemoth to come to the small screen and deliver. It also falls short to Disney in terms of production quality. Clearly defined morality structures (Humans/Covenant replace Jedi/Sith), planet hopping, iconic spacecraft and weaponry - all are found here. It’s a strong enough opening, and although its front-loads its action and tails off into the relative banality of character introductions in the second half, long-time TV fans will know that judging a series on its first episode is often a mistake. Not only is this a new tale, it’s one that handpicks choice pillars of the original games’ arcs, and repurposes them for a new structure.

Halo review – fails to be TV's first great video game adaptation (The Guardian)

In the 51st minute of Halo – a military space-opera that's among the first shows on new streaming service Paramount+, with a one-episode taster on Channel 5 ...

What for much of the first episode is a sterile mix of trigger porn and talky world-building suddenly has potential for a bit of Replicant/Cylon nature-of-humanity philosophising, with a dash of strong/silent Mandalorian cool about the hero. Gamers have enjoyed a live-action version of a Halo level, but the rest of us have sat through a middling battle scene with murky protagonist motives. With all the lizard folk dispatched, the main guy says something tough and pithy in American action-movie idiom, overheard by one of those teens, a girl who is the only survivor of the rebel gang.

'It had to be adapted for television': Paramount+ CCO Praises Halo ... (Fandomwire)

David Nevins, the chief content officer for Paramount+ praises the Halo series and says that it is different from most of the video-game adaptations.

That’s a very powerful theme in a lot of places in the world.” This show is ultimately a story about war and the human costs of endless war. To adapt Bungie’s first-person shooter for the big screen, Paramount spent $10 million for each episode, and with every knowing wink, the message grows louder: This show is for the fans.

Halo: Season 1 (Empire)

Pablo Schreiber is Master Chief in Paramount+'s series adaptation of Halo. Read the Empire review.

When the action does comes, it generally delivers — you’ll just need a little patience getting to it. Now that it’s finally here, Halo does an admirable job of transforming the series’ first-person firefights into a compelling, serialised drama. Spielberg, Jackson, Blomkamp and Garland are just a few of the names that have attempted this adaptation over the years.

Paramount+'s first season of Halo is a shaky but promising start (JumpCut Online)

Fans of the Halo games were elated when it was announced that the original video game voice actor for Cortana would reprise her role for the TV series and Jen Taylor absolutely does not disappoint. This first season very much serves as an origin story for ...

It’s the best episode of the season and ramps up the story for the episodes that follow. Kai-125, played by Kate Kennedy, is the standout of the team next to Master Chief for reasons that I won’t spoil, and hopefully, season two will give Riz and Vannak their moment in the spotlight. It’s exciting to see her character brought to life, so to speak, and I’m very much looking forward to seeing more of her in the future. This first season very much serves as an origin story for Cortana and the beginning of her connection with John (whether he likes it or not!) and it’s hard to not become quickly attached to her. Whilst Halo is an adaptation of the titular successful video game franchise, the showrunners decided that the series would deliver a fresh story and not be a continuation, adaptation, sequel, or prequel in any form. As a massive fan of the Halo video games since Combat Evolved was first released back in 2001, a live-action show has always been something I’d hoped they’d do and personally, this show wouldn’t work as well as it does if John never took off his armour.

Though fans of the source material may lack major interest in the show's future, Wolfkill's recent note that the creative team are listening to both good and bad feedback from viewers for Halo season 2 may create some hope that the series can bounce back from its rocky debut outing. The report also indicates that the Halo show led to an uptick in new subscriptions following its late March premiere on Paramount+. Halo centers on supersoldier Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 as he leads a war against the theocratic-military alliance known as the Covenant, who seek to wipe out the human race and are searching for the titular world.
