Both by-elections are being seen as a measure of whether Mr Johnson still enjoys the kind of popularity which secured the Conservatives a landslide election win in 2019. But Mr Johnson has already said he would not resign if the Conservatives lost the seats. Wakefield was one of the so-called "red wall" of seats in the former Labour heartlands of the Midlands and the North which were won by Boris Johnson's Conservatives in 2019. He said he was "full of optimism and buoyancy" ahead of the results. He was the first Conservative to be elected in the city in more than 87 years when he won the seat at the 2019 General Election. It comes in the wake of the partygate controversy and with the country in the grip of a cost of living crisis.

Tiverton and Honiton by-election live updates as Boris speaks out (Devon Live)

Voters are choosing their next MP after Tory Neil Parish quit and it's too close to call.

Tiverton voters have been having their say on the crunch vote in the constituency tomorrow. A replacement for Neil Parish, who resigned after he admitted watching pornography in the House of Commons, will be decided next Thursday [23 June], with the Conservatives defending a 24,000-plus majority. It was sweltering in Honiton on the eve of the by-election vote. Gill Westcott is one of eight people standing to replace former Conservative MP Neil Parish, with voters going to the polls on Thursday [23 June]. The latest polling for the Liberal Democrats in Tiverton and Honiton suggested they and the Conservatives were neck-and-neck on 45 per cent each. The party said on Twitter: "Voters have the chance Today to really vote for something different. Polling stations for the by-elections in Wakefield and Tiverton & Honiton will be open from 7am to 10pm on Thursday, with the results expected between 4am and 6am on Friday. However it is remarkable that the Liberal Democrats look like they will significantly eat into the very large Conservative majority in the seat, and this does send a signal about people’s views on the Government’s behaviour and actions. It would also be smaller than the 25.2 point swing in the Chesham & Amersham by-election in June 2021, which again saw the Liberal Democrats take the seat from the Tories. He filed this report via Twitter, including footage of the Conservative and Liberal Democrat candidates casting their votes. He represented the constituency since 2010 and had a majority of more than 24,000 over Labour at the General Election in 2019. Labour are poised to regain the seat, which they lost in 2019.

After all they’ve got a massive 24,239 majority to rely on, and they may believe that even the mid-term by-election bandits can’t overcome that. There’s are thousands of leaflets and dozens of unused boards and stakes to stick them on, but there’s no one around to deliver any of it. They will then begin knocking on those doors to get as many people as they can to go and vote, “preferably for us”, say another volunteer, Jack.

Besides Donoghue and Rosen, former Assistant Attorney General for the Office of Legal Counsel Steven Engel also testified in the hearing that was focused on Trump pressuring the Justice Department to overturn the election results. In addition, Acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen told Trump that the department was not able to ‘snap its fingers and change the results of the election’. Former President Donald Trump told Justice Department officials to ‘just say that the election was corrupt’ and to leave the rest to him, according to testimony in the fifth January 6 committee hearing.

Ex-president told officials to declare election 'corrupt' and 'leave the rest to me and Republican congressmen'

Thompson told reporters this week that the committee had received “a lot of information”, including documentary footage of Trump’s final months in office. In new testimony from the committee’s taped deposition with Bill Barr, the former attorney general said he thought it was important for the department to investigate – and ultimately disprove – Trump’s false claims of voter fraud. The committee said it would resume public hearings in July, with at least two more sessions scheduled. The panel voted unanimously to hold Clark in contempt of Congress after he failed to cooperate with its investigation. At the urging of Republican congressman Scott Perry of Pennsylvania, Trump contemplated replacing Rosen with Clark, an environmental lawyer by trade. “Donald Trump didn’t just want the justice department to investigate,” Thompson said.

Pat Cipollone, then the White House counsel, said the letter that Clark wanted to send was a “murder-suicide pact.” Rosen, resisting the idea of being fired by a subordinate, said Thursday that he contacted senior Justice Department officials to rally them together and also requested a White House meeting. A report released last year by the Senate Judiciary Committee that painted Clark as a relentless advocate for Trump included a draft letter pushing Georgia officials to convene a special legislative session to reconsider the election results. “Steve Engel at one point said, ‘Jeff Clark will be leading a graveyard. A spokesman for the US attorney confirmed the existence of law enforcement activity in Virginia, where Clark lives, but would not say what it was connected to. Clark has been subpoenaed by the committee but was not among the witnesses Thursday. Lawmakers on Thursday played a videotaped deposition showing him repeatedly invoking his constitutional right against self-incrimination. “And I said, ‘That’s right. “He wanted the Justice Department to help legitimize his lies, to basically call the election corrupt” and to appoint a special counsel. Three Trump-era Justice Department officials recounted a relentless pressure campaign from the president, including day after day of directives to chase unsupported allegations that the election won by Democrat Joe Biden had been stolen. Testimony also centred on a tense Oval Office showdown on Jan. 3, 2021, in which Trump contemplated replacing Rosen with a lower-level official, Jeffrey Clark, who wanted to champion Trump’s bogus election fraud claims. As in past hearings, the committee focused on lawmakers who’d aligned themselves with Trump’s efforts. The Justice Department resisted each demand.

The committee will also show how Trump asked the DOJ to file lawsuits with his campaign on behalf of his election fraud claims. Both refused to give in to Trump's efforts to get the DOJ to advance his fraudulent claims of voter fraud and overturn the election. Committee Chair Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., told reporters that today's hearing will be the last for this month with more hearings to come after Congress' July 4th recess. Trump tried to push Donoghue to proclaim the election as illegal and corrupt. He also said DOJ should use the report to tell the public the election was tainted. Panel aides have said that the hearing will lay out how the former president wanted the DOJ to publicly state there was election fraud. Donoghue told the committee he reacted by saying “‘You’re an environmental lawyer. “I did the quick calculation and came up with .0063% error rate, which is well within tolerance,” Donoghue said in his testimony today. “Donald Trump knew this was a lie,” she said. Trump had reportedly mused about firing the then-acting attorney general and replacing him with Clark. - The panel hears from a filmmaker: British documentarian Alex Holder said hetestified behind closed doorswith the Jan. 6 committee on Thursday morning. The next day, Trump pressed the DOJ that the report must be true and proved that he had won the election.
