Saturday at Glastonbury: Self Esteem and AJ Tracey perform – live! (The Guardian)

The festival enters its second day with Paul McCartney headlining, plus sets from Noel Gallagher, Megan Thee Stallion, Skunk Anansie, Olivia Rodrigo and ...

“The first Zambian band to perform at the Sydney Opera House … and the first Zambian band ever to perform at Glastonbury!” I’ve just flicked over to Self Esteem on the iPlayer and can confirm that the outfit is quite something. “I want to see you back out in the crowd soon,” she says. The suns out, bums are twirling and the geezers in the crowd – one of the most diverse of the festival so far – are pulling their smoothest moves. And once again: that OUTFIT. Candidate for best lewk of the fest, for sure. There’s one where bassist Cameron Picton takes centre stage, acoustic guitar in hand, to sing a rollicking country number that sounds a bit like the Maccabees off their rockers. She is an elegant, waist-winding breath of fresh air and surely a huge star in the making. They’ve grown since 2017 from trio into five-man skronk-off, a sound rooted in free jazz but which flips genre more quickly than you say “sprechgesang” (the slurring sing-speak so beloved by bands like Dry Cleaning and Midi’s Gen-Z Mark R Smith vocalist, Geordie Greep). And while she might get lumped in with Afrobeats, her style is far broader, pulling in jazz, rock and even a bit of gospel amid the syncopated beat and trill of highlife guitars. But now, she says, “I’m back.” No backing tracks here - she brings with her a slick full live band, who pack a punch and plump out her tales of heartache and empowerment, and performs in a figure-hugging red outfit and matching red eyeshadow. To celebrate Paul McCartney’s 80th birthday last week, Shane from Clapton tells our Kate Hutchinson that he would take him to “NYC Downlow, I’d get him a pink moustache on the door and show him a good time. You can see why Adele is a fan: Tems’s delivery is similarly from the gut, her style strong yet refined.

The former Beatle's headline show on Saturday comes exactly a week after he celebrated his 80th birthday.

Ahead of his history-making set on the Pyramid Stage, Sir Paul delivered a surprise preview performance at an intimate venue in Frome, Somerset, where he played some of his best-known solo material. Eilish gave an electrifying headline performance on the Pyramid Stage on Friday to end the first day of performances at Glastonbury. Also among the selection of songs was The Beatles’ Fixing A Hole and Let Me Roll It, a song he released with his band Wings. The third song the former Beatle played on the Pyramid Stage was Letting Go, which he released alongside his former band Wings. Sir Paul McCartney has made history as Glastonbury’s oldest solo headliner as he kicked off his set on the Pyramid Stage. Sir Paul, dressed in a navy Nehru style jacket, kicked off the set with a rendition of The Beatles’ hit Can’t Buy Me Love.

A source close to Macca said: “It seems only right that Sir Paul should acknowledge the incredible fact both are playing the same weekend. "He was in the middle of his tribute to Jimi Hendrix when he stopped to check on someone in the crowd." "I suppose when The Beatles broke up perhaps there was a misconception we all sort of hated each other,” he said to British GQ in 2020. However, when you go to BBC iPlayer and attempt to watch his show on the Glastonbury channel, it states: ‘Watch Paul McCartney’s headline performance on the Glastonbury Channel on iPlayer and BBC One from 10.30pm’… much to many people’s annoyance. Paul McCartney pulled out a shock move during his headline set at the 2022 Glastonbury Festival by bringing out Bruce Springsteen.

The Boss had the chance to live out his dream when he played live with Paul McCartney once before, but nothing on the scale of a headline Glastonbury show. It was a moment in time which turned him away from the blue-collar route he thought he was destined for. Bruce Springsteen, a legendary figure of the music industry alongside McCartney himself, is a creative who has made the world of rock ‘n’ roll a more poetic place.

Paul smashes the 'fuh' out of the Pyramid stage, bringing out Dave Grohl, Bruce Springsteen and even virtual John Lennon.

Macca was preceded on the lineup by Noel Gallagher, who famously told the audience at Oasis’ seminal Knebworth Park show in 1996: “This is history.” So was this. You can’t argue with the songs, though: ‘Blackbird’, ‘Lady Madonna’ and under-appreciated randy banger ‘Fuh You’. The helter-skelter-style sense of a steady climb that’s about to lead to a dizzying rush is halted only when a dubious video of Johnny Depp accompanies ‘My Valentine’ – a song Paul wrote for his wife Nancy, released in 2011 – and cools the atmosphere somewhat. This starts with the Quarrymen’s ‘In Spite Of All The Danger’ and winds up at ‘Here Today’, the song he wrote in the wake of John Lennon’s death. We’re back together.” Bowing out after a Grohl and Spingsteen-assisted ‘Abbey Road’ medley, the 80-year-old goes over his billed time by a good 30 mins, having thrown absolutely everything he has – which is saying something for an actual Beatle – at Glastonbury 2022, sounding like a man who, frankly, knows he might not do this again. After opening with ‘Can’t Buy Me Love,’ he promises “some old songs, some new songs, some in betweeners:”, then spends the front portion of the show teasing with Wings tunes – including the Liquorice Pizza-rejuvenated ‘Let Me Roll It’ – and offering a potted history of the Beatles through song. People talk about ‘Glastonbury moments’: Macca’s joy bonanza of a set is packed with at least – at least – half a dozen of them, including the audience spontaneously singing him ‘Happy Birthday’ and later taking over the universal ‘Hey Jude’ refrain.

Paul McCartney, Glastonbury 2022, review: Bruce Springsteen and ... (iNews)

How do you stop this historic, 50th-anniversary show becoming "The Beatle"? Like this.

This show was not The Beatle: McCartney and his band – joyous and bombastic trombones and saxophones, hypnotically good guitarists (that’s before Dave Grohl and Bruce Springsteen showed up, but we’ll get to that) and a drummer who danced the sprinkler and the macarena – had a sound modern, and all their own. McCartney – who turned 80 this week – was always the obvious choice to headline Glastonbury’s 50th anniversary festival (it is his second time, after his performance in 2004). A good Pyramid Stage headline show must be momentous, never just another stop on the tour but a spectacle so unique and of such gravitas that has punters asking, “were you there?” for decades to come. At the beginning of Paul McCartney’s Pyramid Stage show, it was hard not to bear his record – “oldest ever Glastonbury headliner” – in mind.

With this in mind, revellers are recommended to allow for “plenty of time” when planning their journey to the site so that they can enjoy the 50th-anniversary celebrations without too much of a hitch. With Billie Eilish, Paul McCartney and Kendrick Lamar all set to headline the famed Pyramid Stage, the fateful return is brimming with talent. After a two-year absence that feels like an eternity, the biggest music festival in the world is set to be even bigger as Glastonbury finally returns this weekend.

McCartney’s available canon is the greatest in music by such a vast degree that any couple of hours plucked from it at random would be the best gig of any particular year, as he proved on Friday night at a warm-up gig speckled with relatively obscure Beatles and Wings tunes, in nearby Frome. Tonight, after an anticipation-building megamix of Macca classics that threatens to be longer than Peter Jackson’s Get Back documentary, he indulges in roughly the same set, plus surprises. “I know it’s virtual,” he says, “but there I am singing with John again, we’re back together”. Then he straps on a guitar and plays “Helter Skelter”. We’re gonna need a bigger star rating system. It’s a historic privilege just to be alive at the same time as him. Like any communal dig through a crate of unlimited treasures, the show takes turns into fond reminiscence. But it has only one name that will be etched into history books centuries from now, as one half of the greatest songwriting partnership of the rock’n’roll era. The garish velvet Pepper bands roaming the site all day might be here to celebrate the retro-pop cheesiness of Glastonbury’s oldest headliner but, getting real, let’s not spare the superlatives here.

Over on the Pyramid stage Beatles superfan and former headliner Noel Gallagher was a no-brainer choice to warm up for McCartney. His best songs, too, are etched in stone and suited the sound of tens of thousands of voices beneath the setting sun. Even if you couldn’t see them, the mass scream in the middle of Ur Mum was a moment of communal hysteria. The volcanic power ballad Happier than Ever, decked with fireworks, completed a winning set and a knockout Friday during which women called all the shots. One all-timer followed another: a romping Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, a fiery Get Back with a video by Peter Jackson. Dave Grohl became McCartney’s surprise sideman for I Saw Her Standing There and Band on the Run, and was immediately followed by Bruce Springsteen. Even before McCartney got to Let It Be and Hey Jude the whole field was levitating with delight. As the set built, the weight of history, memory and absent friends accumulated. McCartney looks a decade younger and remains in gutsy voice, a fine advertisement for decades of vegetarianism.
