And I hope that can serve as a reminder here in Britain to protect the rights that you have, protect the healthcare that you have.” The modern successor to Iggy Pop, she has a flicky peroxide mullet and wears a tiny gold two-piece that makes her look like Barbarella by way of Abba, and seems, to put it politely, absolutely mashed. “I saw a man with a plant pot for a head coming out of the loo. Anyone who says Glastonbury is getting overly gentrified needs to see Amyl and the Sniffers, one of the few bands around today who give off a genuine sense of danger. With a stage backdrop reading “we still believe in love” they announced their arrival with gutsy anthem Dexter and Sinister – and the crowd go remarkably wild. And then they leap into the exuberant chaos of their first ever song: Five Colours in Her Hair, which I did not remember having a lyric about wanting to “bone her” – risque! It’s their first time at Glastonbury (“thank you for breaking our virginity!” – I heard them say this, so you have to read it, too), and they’re certainly enjoying it, from what I can see of the lead guitarist zestfully zipping around the stage. Her set is also a masterclass in stagecraft, switching between acoustic guitar and singing to the audience, arms-outstretched, charming as well as acerbic. At Primavera festival in Barcelona she reportedly spent a lot of her set dissing her ex-husband, the subject of her latest album Star-Crossed – and given the opening skit, its deeply dramatic flamenco-western title track with a burning heart behind her, you’d be forgiven for expecting that hell hath no fury like a country singer scorned. Taking to the stage wearing a chic silk shirt and matching shorts, both by the hyped luxury resortwear brand Casablanca, she is a sweet, compelling presence, casual in attitude but totally in control of her crowd. “I see your cowboy hats, I know you know what yee-haw means,” she smiles, looking out at a crowd spotted with pink fluffy western numbers and breaking into her disco-fied song High Horse – her giddy-up Get Lucky. Country music has never been much one to boogie to – line-dancing, sure, but not gleeful shape-throwing – but Musgraves is a fearlessly genre-blending star. Although her band often overwhelms her vocals – powerful bass muffling any of the nuances in her words, the stadium-primed drum kit a constant distracting presence – Koffee’s voice is still a remarkable instrument, at turns husky, sweet, emphatic and lackadaisical.

Trans community responds to Kendrick Lamar's Auntie Diaries as rapper prepares to headline Glastonbury 2022.
‘If he went back and made changes he would be giving in to the complaints and push back instead of just sticking to his initial feelings,’ Chloe says. ‘There have been plenty of suggestions as to how he could have done what he has done in these lyrics better. He needs to talk with those he is talking about and listen. ‘He is an award-winning writer and I think his use of the word, in the manner he did, was very clever. His vulnerable retelling of his experience unlearning the bigotry he was taught as a kid provides a framework for other people to map their own experiences onto in order to grow in the same way he has.’ He makes an example out of himself in this song to display the growth and learning process people can undergo when someone they love comes out as trans, bisexual, gay, non-binary. Chloe reckons that for the most part people understood the point Kendrick was making. Ramon also notes Kendrick’s constant reinforcement of the incredibly positive relationship he had as a youth with his trans uncle. This might be where alarm bells start ringing for those in the LGBTQ+ community who might be more sensitive to harsh language, and rightfully so, however, this wasn’t the case for me.’ My only fear is that maybe some bigots out there think the slurs are ok with the mindset “if Kendrick said it why can’t I?” For 26-year-old Ramon, Auntie Diaries explains the incredibly messy path a cisgender, heterosexual person goes through in their journey to allyship with the queer community. ‘This made me think of the idea of growth,’ she says.

Sporting a bejewelled crown of thorns and with a profound sense of theatre, Lamar proves he is one of the most gifted rappers we have.
A trio of tracks from Good Kid MAAD City – Money Trees; The Art of Peer Pressure; Swimming Pools (Drank), the last with two dancers writhing woozily around Lamar – is followed by the big hitters from To Pimp a Butterfly: King Kunta sounds ferocious, the chorus of Alright as potent as ever. Lamar’s set is tightly choreographed, involving two troupes of dancers, one all-male, the other all-female, their movements shifting from sinuous to militaristic. This time it involves not the former One Direction star but Eminem, who has apparently been spotted swimming at the exclusive Babington House hotel not far from the Worthy Farm site: evidence, it’s adduced, that he’s set to make a guest appearance during Kendrick Lamar’s performance.

And Lamar? Well tonight he has it all: the hits, the heritage, and the humility. Anyone thinking this is going to be a set of reflective, conscious hip hop – like the bulk of the work on Mr Morale – is in for a shock. Jay Z was the first hip-hop artist to headline the festival in 2008, an announcement which prompted Noel Gallagher of Oasis to claim: “I’m not having hip-hop at Glastonbury. It’s wrong.” Jay’s performance went down well, but it didn't seem to settle the doubters. Before anybody has time to think we're into “Backstreet Freestyle”, followed by the opening bars of “The Art of Peer Pressure”. Lamar is going hard; he doesn't miss a beat; his flow is on point. Then “Poetic Justice” flows seamlessly into “B*** Don't Kill My Vibe”. Kendrick Lamar opened his Glastonbury headline set with a powerful, theatrical performance unlike anything else the festival has seen so far.
"We're so happy to be here, in the place love was invented." She even threw in a karaoke version of Fleetwood Mac's scathing break-up anthem Dreams for good measure. "We're in this together. The rapper puts of a raging party as he closes out Sunday night on the Pyramid Stage – but he leave the audience plenty to think about too.
Then he closes his poignant Glastonbury show with ‘Saviour’. Kendrick Lamar’s evolution has occurred before our eyes, as the once-coy and timid boy, who needed to make it off section eight housing, now understands the power of his tongue. The first sentence Kendrick says to the crowd is “I think we’ve got a whole lot of love out here tonight: Glastonbury, do you agree?” – and it isn’t just superficial crowd hyping-up. Firstly, when the zippy ‘Silent Hill’ comes on, as he raps, “Picking my daughter up, she needs all the love”, he smiles and nods off stage towards his wife in the wings. Kendrick Lamar allows his primetime spot, televised to the entire world, to showcase contemporary Black art – and this adds to this performance’s supremacy. In between his latest record and the one before that ( the Pulitzer Award-winning ‘DAMN.’), the 35-year-old’s life has developed in so many ways; he’s become a father, and with that came a new sense of clarity on life. After a five-year hiatus, the Compton rap phenomenon that is Kendrick Lamar decided to make his comeback this year with his fifth album, ‘Mr Morale & The Big Steppers’, and, boy, didn’t the world take him back with open arms.

The beautifully romantic “Love” was so tenderly performed that the applause went on and on for it and the previously stony-faced Lamar was visibly moved. They judged Christ, they judge you”. It was a sentiment a little lost on the religion-averse British crowd, though it led to a powerful moment during “Savior” when he interpolated a call for women’s rights into the final moments as blood descended down his face from the thorns on his crown – making him one of the few male performers at Glastonbury to have addressed the US Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. During “Institutionalised”, the words “They want us to bow” filled the stage backdrop, while Kendrick performed most of the song stooped over as his dancers enclosed him; for “Count Me Out”, his female dancers dressed in red were arrayed around him, like an image of Mary Magdalene bathing Christ.

Even when he has made claims to be the best rapper there has been, he does so with a sense of destiny, not arrival: as he says on one of his biggest hits, “I’m looking to be the God MC/You look at my crown and see thorns there”. Some of his peers choose stances that are essentially static - they simply assert themselves as the greatest of all time, which is all well and good, but there is little sense of a journey, of taking the listener with them. Such is Kendrick Lamar’s importance as an artist that, when he takes the stage at the beginning of a new tour, the effect is that of a state-of-the-nation address.
