Tracee Ellis Ross, actor and entrepreneur, is taking her brand to new countries and new heights with a steady cadence of launches.

“One thing I didn’t know before was how much goes into product: the marketing, the language on the packaging, sustainability, all of the regulations shifting.” “The brand was born out of my own personal hair care journey and my experiences brought me into a community of people that were like me, becoming their own best experts,” she said. “I’m the CEO and founder, and I’m majority owner of the company with full creative control. Ross referenced a recent McKinsey & Co. survey she partnered with the firm on, called “Black representation in the beauty industry,” which quantifies those disparities. “We will keep going from there.” I would like Pattern to be everywhere, because I believe that we are everywhere,” Ross said.

As her haircare line, Pattern, launches in Boots, actress and activist Tracee Ellis Ross talks about her journey with her hair and empowering people with ...

“I never understood why the beauty industry and the retail industry was designed to make you think you had a problem you had to fix,” Ross says, calling this “a concealer culture” which attempts to change individuals. She says the brand itself provides “an active space for the celebration of Black beauty” – and a way to alter the default negative marketing that the community is subject to. “It's now been about three decades of me building a foundation with my hair; a foundation of trust and love,” she explains. “Growing up in a society that told me that there was a ‘right’ way to wear my hair, there was a ‘right’ version of what my hair should look like,” directly affected her self-esteem. “I tried to beat my hair into submission,” she reveals. “The brand really was born out of my own journey with my hair and realisation that the world was not mirroring back to me my own authentic beauty,” she tells us.

Tip: to achieve Ross’ iconic lip, use the Ruby Woo lipstick and Cherry lip liner by MAC Cosmetics. “I love a bold color, I love a matte lip,” she’s previously revealed. Lucky for us, Ross nodded to the brand responsible for the super flattering outfit by tagging Victoria Beckham in the photo. The Blackish star let the photos do the talking this time—posting the three gorgeous snapshots without a caption—and we can see why.
