Former actor Laurence Fox saw his Twitter locked after the Reclaim UK leader enraged with a 'swastika' image.
My post was clearly meant to highlight this double standard – and the temporary ban which resulted from it effectively proved my point.’ He added in a statement to Metro.co.uk: ‘While I’m pleased that my account has been reinstated, this temporary ban only served to reinforce the rank hypocrisy which Twitter is engaged in. Not that hard to understand to be honest.’ Later this morning, however, Laurence’s account was back up and running, with the actor changing his profile image to the flag of China, before updating it again to be a character holding a rainbow Pride flag. On Monday morning, Laurence’s account was locked by Twitter, with a notice stating it had violated the platform’s Media Policy. He had written alongside the image, which, while it is no longer his profile picture, still remains as a post on his feed: ‘I’ve updated my profile picture for the remainder of the holy month.

I have no doubt that what Fox did was a form of hate speech, and there’s a case for banning him from Twitter or even prosecuting him under the law. With rare exceptions, when reinforced by social conventions and pressure, banning any sort of symbol by law – especially in the internet age – is not practical. I seem to remember the shock and offence caused – especially to Jewish people – when the swastika became a fashion item in about 1977. I didn’t report Fox’s Tweet because I just thought it was a childish prank – nasty and hateful simply for the sake of it. As we see in all parts of the world and across every culture, flags are potent things, and their denigration often causes riots and is sometimes prohibited by law. Someone on Twitter thought it would be clever to rotate four LGBT flags through 90 degrees and arrange them such that the new trans element of the rainbow design comprised a kind of candy-coloured swastika.
