Serena Williams vs Harmony Tan LIVE: American starts what could ... (Daily Express)

A double fault from Tan immediately sets up another but she corrects her mistake with a huge serve to get back to deuce. Williams get to break point but loses two points in a row and it's suddenly set point for the world No 115. Williams refuses to go down without a fight and forces an error from Tan as the Frenchwoman attempts to serve out the set. Firing a huge return at her opponent, she sends another booming forehand down the court that Tan can't get anything on. She expertly saves it with her third ace but Tan plays a perfect lob to set up another break point. Her fourth break point is saved by a Tan winner once again and Williams can't capitalise on a second serve as he return goes wide to give her opponent a game point. But 40-year-old quickly pressures the Frenchwoman's serve with an overhead winner to lead 15-30. She chases down another Tan drop shot but the umpire calls "not up". It's a third chance for the American after an error from Tan but Williams is left looking bewildered as it's saved by a winner. Williams completes an easy hold to extend her lead in this second set to 5-0 with the comeback well and truly on. The Centre Court crowd cheers as the lights are turned off for this match to continue into the evening. The American legend only recently returned after 12 months out and is playing in her first Grand Slam since her unfortunate exit at Wimbledon last time around.

Williams backhand into the net, break point Tan again. Williams puts a backhand wide as she tries to pass Tan at the net, 40-15. Williams forehand into the tramlines, 40-30. Williams saves the first. Tan puts a sliced forehand long and Williams has another break point. Williams forehand into the net, 15-40. Williams finally gets it right with a backhand down the line, 40-15. Williams is running away with the set now as Tan makes a few more errors. Tan HOLDS with a backhand winner. Tan backhand winner down the line, 4-1. Williams fought off a match point at 5-6 with a brave drive volley, and then took a 4-0 lead in the super tie-break, but Tan just kept on coming. And it was probably that mental exhaustion that allowed Williams to reel off the next three games as well before Tan began to recover.

Despite her uncertainty, Williams did say that a tight defeat in her first match back motivated her to return to the practice court and to improve for the US Open to come. But she first lost her 3-1 lead, then she served for the match and Tan wrestled it from her with a backhand passing shot. But time comes for us all, and in a torrid evening on Centre Court showed the challenge before her in the final chapter of her career. In terms of ranking and experience, the world No 115 Tan was one of the better draws Williams could have received. Rusty and short of confidence against a player who gave her none, Williams recovered from a set down and fought her heart out before falling in the first round 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7) to France’s Harmony Tan. She underwent knee surgery in 2003, yet within a year of her return she was a grand slam champion again.
