Iga Swiatek overcame a slight wobble against qualifier Jana Fett to book her place in round two at Wimbledon.
I want to use the experience that my coach has. It’s tricky because I still feel like I’ve only played 12 weeks in my life on grass. I’m happy that I came back and finished in two sets.
World No 1 loses just three games en route to second round where she will face lucky loser Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove.
It’s a new experience for me basically. “It’s pretty exciting. Fett did show some fight at the beginning of the second set and had points for a double break and a 4-1 lead, only for Swiatek to win the next five games on the bounce and seal victory in front of an expectant Centre Court crowd.
Swiatek opened Centre Court on Tuesday with a 6-0 6-3 win over Jana Fett while there were victories for Gauff, Heather Watson and Maria Sakkari.
There was a real threat of a first-round exit during the tight and tense rallies deep into the deciding set. In taking 17 of the first 23 points of the second set and breaking Swiatek’s serve twice, Fett found some confidence and restored a faint bit of hope. Swiatek more than once looked up into the sky when serving towards the royal box, as the midday sun pointed down and a blustering wind whipped around Centre Court. It made serving a challenge but when the ball was in play Swiatek did not take long to dissect Fett from behind the baseline in the early exchanges. Fett dug in but Swiatek was unrelenting in closing out her 17th 6-0 scoreline of the 2022 season. Of the previous 35 wins, 19 came on hardcourts, 16 on clay, and now there is a first on grass. It was Swiatek’s first match of the grass-court season and still, the end result was decisive and completely familiar.
World No.1 Iga Swiatek picked up her 36th match-win in a row with a straight-sets victory over qualifier Jana Fett on Centre Court at Wimbledon.
Gauff is into the Wimbledon second round for the third time in her three appearances. In a gripping 70-minute third set, a netcord return winner gave Gauff an early break before Ruse leveled the affair again at 3-3. Ruse saved 21 of the 25 break points she faced in total. Fett increasingly drew errors from the top seed as the match progressed, and the qualifier held five break points to take a commanding 4-1 lead in the second set. By the numbers: Fett is now 0-3 against Top 10 players in her career. Swiatek converted six of her 10 break points on the day.

Swiatek, however, quickly regained her focus to win the next five games. The 24-year-old Ruse fought back from 3-1 down in the final set to level at 3-3 but Gauff hung on despite continuing to misfire her shots on break points and secured victory when her opponent whipped a forehand wide on match point. When 11th seed Gauff went on to earn and lose four break points in Ruse’s opening service game, it set the tone for a frustrating afternoon for her family.
World number one Iga Swiatek went into the record books in style as she won her 36th match in a row with victory over Jana Fett on Centre Court.
Defending champion Ashleigh Barty’s retirement meant that Swiatek was given the honour of opening play on the main show court and she looked entirely at home, handing her opponent a 33-minute bagel. She had three break points to make it 4-1, but Swiatek escaped and that was the end of it, as the Pole quickly rattled off five games in a row to continue her invincible streak. The two-time French Open champion, a hot favourite for the SW19 crown, enjoyed the prestigious opening slot on Centre Court usually reserved for the defending champion and beat Croatian Fett 6-0 6-3.
It was not pretty the entire time but Iga Swiatek largely dominated her 1st round encounter with Jana Fett 6-0 6-3. Swiatek started off really well in this ...
It was a decent match for Iga with 10 winners and only 15 mistakes. Her opponent was simply not up to par with 7 winners and 22 unforced errors. Swiatek struggled a bit with timing and everything else but despite falling behind 1-3, she was able to battle back to make it 3-3.

“To play on Centre Court and get a win first time, it’s amazing. Murray will need to play better, especially from the start, but there were encouraging signs throughout that he is indeed fit enough for the Championships after arriving in SW19 on the back of an injury scare. You knew you had seen this fight before and although Murray tempered the baying crowd by reminding them of how grateful he is to still be enjoying these opportunities at all, the exciting part is there could be a lot more to come. It was another night on Centre Court where Andy Murray played all the hits, and even had room for a new trick. “I always wanted to achieve, always wanted to be in this level, always wanted to inspire players from my country, from my continent. Now every time I go back, I’m just going to have a great first experience. Today marks the return of Nadal, back for the first time since 2019 and fresh from opening up a lead in the race to finish with the most men’s grand slam titles with 22. The favourite in the women’s singles is World No 1 Iga Swiatek and she opens up her championships on Centre Court against Jana Fett, taking the traditional slot on the first Tuesday of play after defending women’s champion Ash Barty’s sudden retirement. It’s quite tough for her because for elderly people it’s most important to have a routine and, right now, there is lots of bombing and shooting going on in Odessa, in my hometown. “Of course, I’m still very, very sad about the situation that is happening right now and knowing how many people have lost their lives because of the invasion,” Svitolina told CNN Sport. “It makes me very sad. Her being half Romanian means a lot also for the Romanians. The seven-time Wimbledon champion is back in singles action after cruelly being forced to retire from her first round match at SW19 last year and the 40-year-old, third up on Centre Court, looks to ignite her comeback from a hamstring injury when she takes on Harmony Tan.

She’s going to have to serve well, in that last match against Alison van Uytvanck it was a little slow, she can be more accurate too. I think that the more matches she plays at Wimbledon the more relaxed she’s going to feel.” I was very impressed with the win of Emma Raducanu, a very tricky first-round opponent in Alison Van Uytvanck who has already won a title on grass.
World number one Iga Swiatek knows she cannot be compared to Serena or Venus Williams yet, despite winning her 36th match in a row to set a new record.
But I’m just really happy and I’m trying to use it the best way possible.” “But it’s amazing for me to have that kind of streak. “Still when I see Serena or see Venus, they seem like, I don’t know, the legends,” she said.

The Pole's record-breaking 36th successive win poses questions about how far she can go – both at Wimbledon and in the future.
The challenge for the rest of the field is to get to her first. Swiatek was asked about opening on Centre Court in the absence of last year’s champion, Ash Barty, and was good enough to give a serious answer when she could have just pointed to her ranking. At the end there was polite applause and a cheer for the (kind of) record run. At times in the opening set she sent the ball burning past Fett with backhands from the baseline that weren’t a response to an error or a short ball but were just too fast, too hard, too good, the shots of somebody playing another game. At the start of her current winning run Swiatek was ranked No 7 in the world. But it was enough to add a note of interest to Swiatek’s march towards a 36th successive win, now the longest women’s singles winning run of this century.
