Despite her uncertainty, Williams did say that a tight defeat in her first match back motivated her to return to the practice court and to improve for the US Open to come. But she first lost her 3-1 lead, then she served for the match and Tan wrestled it from her with a backhand passing shot. But time comes for us all, and in a torrid evening on Centre Court showed the challenge before her in the final chapter of her career. In terms of ranking and experience, the world No 115 Tan was one of the better draws Williams could have received. Rusty and short of confidence against a player who gave her none, Williams recovered from a set down and fought her heart out before falling in the first round 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7) to France’s Harmony Tan. She underwent knee surgery in 2003, yet within a year of her return she was a grand slam champion again.

Serena Williams left her future open to question after her return to Wimbledon ended in a first-round defeat by little-known Frenchwoman Harmony Tan.

“But today I gave all I could do. But today was what I could do. “When you’re at home, especially in New York, and the US Open, that being the first place I’ve won a grand slam, is something that’s always super special. Asked if she could be satisfied with Tuesday’s loss being her final Wimbledon memory, she said: “Obviously not. “It definitely makes me want to hit the practice courts,” she said. I did pretty good on maybe one or two of them, but obviously not enough.”

Serena Williams denied on Wimbledon return as Harmony Tan ... (The Independent)

The seven-time Wimbledon champion was defeated 7-5 1-6 7-6 (7) in a deciding tie-break on Centre Court.

The tension was enhanced by the dash to 10 points, the Centre Court crowd erupting as Williams raced to a 4-0 lead. For a while it seemed there would be no end, and in previous years this match would have extended past the final-set tie-break. The two weeks since the news of Williams receiving a wildcard for the singles draw had softened the shock of her unexpected comeback. She did question her own mental execution at key points and although Williams turns 41 in September, she insisted she would be motivated by ensuring this is the start of another chapter of her career, rather than the end. Despite her year-long absence from the game, the ball pinged off her racket in the same way that few players have been able to produce in the history of the sport. The 24-year-old from France was more than just a brick wall as she answered Williams’ growing power, producing flashing winners on both sides to break Williams and force the deciding tie-break.

Booming groundstrokes gave Williams a 4-0 lead in the breaker, but Tan leveled the tussle to reach 6-6. In the second set, Williams prevailed on her seventh break point of a grueling 19-minute game to lead 2-0. However, Tan passed Williams to break back for 5-5, and Tan held her first match point at 6-5. Match moments: Williams rebounded from 0-2 to 4-2 in the opening set, but Tan used crafty play to pull her way back into the opener. However, Tan charged back from a 4-0 deficit in that breaker to earn her first grass-court match-win at tour level. Williams, 40, suffered only her third first-round loss at a Grand Slam event in her legendary career. "It's a dream because, you know, I saw Serena on the TV when I was young. "It's definitely better than last year, that's a start. She's a legend." Williams' most recent singles match took place one year ago on the very same court, where she suffered an ankle injury against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the Wimbledon first round. "I play every ball like just, put some slice, some change, some variety on the game, and it works today. Tan eliminated 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams after 3 hours and 11 minutes of gripping play.

Serena Williams OUT of Wimbledon in first round after losing three ... (The Sun)

SO the 1204th best female tennis player strode onto Centre Court in her flamboyant housecoat and her fishnet tights. And she huffed and she puffed and.

The seven-time Wimbledon champion wanted to go out on her own terms, in a blaze of glory. She did not want that to be the final bow on her favourite patch of grass. And Williams saved a match point in her next service game to force a tie-break, where she blew a 4-0 lead and succumbed 10-7. Wearing stickers on her face to aid a sinus problem, Williams began with severe ring rust - a double fault, a wild volley which missed an open court and she was broken in the opening game. And she huffed and she puffed and - even in defeat - she brought the bloody house down. The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion - who was part of a consortium which tried to buy Chelsea Football Club this year - said she’d turned on the ‘out of office’ function on her emails in order to concentrate on a spot of tennis.
