Rafael Nadal live score: The French Open champion is on Centre Court on day four of Wimbledon as he takes on Ricardas Berankis. The Sporting News will be ...

3.55pm: Both players enter the court and Nadal salutes the crowd. Nadal has his first ace on the third serve before two errors from his opponent gift him the first game. More of the same follows but at deuce Nadal hits a forehand long and suddenly Berankis has break point but his return from the serve finds the net. A wild forehand from Nadal eases the pressure though as he moves to 40-15. Nadal then sends back-to-back forehands long and Berankis holds again. Berankis gets back to deuce but opts for a ballsy challenge on a Nadal forehand mid-rally. Nadal saves one but a sliced backhand can't get over the net and he's broken. Berankis hits a forehand winner to save the first but hits the ball well wide at the next point and screams out in frustration at himself. Berankis hits a forehand long and then Nadal rounds off with an ace. Nadal serves an ace and is on the board. Another ace and Nadal holds. The pair's only other meeting came in January when Berankis dropped a straight-sets match to Nadal at the Melbourne Summer Set.

Rafael Nadal vs Ricardas Berankis LIVE: Wimbledon updates as ... (Daily Express)

RAFAEL NADAL takes on the world No 106 Ricardas Berankis as he continues his quest to win all four Grand Slam titles in one year.

With the world No 105 at the net, Nadal attempts a passing winner but the ball goes wide and it's a fourth point in a row for Berankis to stay alive and hold for 4-4. Having sent the ball out to lose a point, Nadal holds for 4-3 with another Berankis error. But it's the world No 4 who nets the ball on the next point to gift the Lithuanian his first break of the match. And the Lithuanian makes it out of a tricky service game to hold for 4-4. The Spaniard can't take advantage of a second serve and nets the ball mid-rally but still has a second set point. At deuce, the Lithuanian stops the rally to challenge one of Nadal's shots but hawkeye confirms it was in and Berankis loses the point. But it's all Berankis in the next point as he fires an overhead that Nadal returns before the Lithuanian fires a drop shot with Nadal's return going long. It's yet another enthralling rally in this game as Nadal returns another one of the Berankis overheads and the pair paint the lines before the world No 4 hits a cross-court forehand winner for set point number four. At 15-15, the 32-year-old approaches the net but sends a volley wide to gift Nadal another point. It's saved as the Lithuanian can't get Nadal's serve back and he sends a ball long to give the second seed game point. A Nadal winner keeps him in it for now and his eighth ace of the match gets him back to 30-30. Berankis edges closer to winning third third set as Nadal starts the game with an error.

At 3-0 in the fourth set, there was a delay of about one hour due to rain, forcing the players to depart while the Centre Court roof was closed. In his past 15 Grand Slam appearances, he has reached at least the quarter-finals. Berankis lost his focus momentarily in his first service game of the fourth set, launching a forehand approach shot long to hand the Spaniard a service break. He made 39 unforced errors against the former junior World No. 1, but credit goes to Berankis for raising his level against the 22-time major champion. "Every day is an opportunity to improve and today I'm through, so that gives me the chance to keep going. "Every day is a challenge, that's the truth.

Nadal will know that, but he will continue to choose the moments to do so. He served it out impressively to deny the Spaniard, as Nadal lurked and clawed at the door. Eventually, Nadal stemmed the dripping of errors and he discovered the angled winners to break again in the 12th game. When the 32-year-old came out to serve at 4-5 there was a sense of inevitability about Nadal breaking for the opening set after Berankis threw a costly double fault into the mix at 15-30. A place in the third round and a match against Lorenzo Sonego is safe refuge after the hesitancy of the opening exchanges. But, for a player whose year has been defined by rediscovering the peak of his powers, this was a far from vintage performance from the two-time Wimbledon champion.

New calls to restrict Wimbledon's plastic bottles – despite Nadal's ritual (The Guardian)

The Spaniard likes to line up single-use bottles, but Laura Robson says tournament must up its environmental game.

Usually on a plane – there’s hardly any opportunities to use other forms of transport – and then you get to a big tournament like this. And you know, there’s a fleet of Land Rovers, which are lovely, but not necessarily that environmentally friendly.” “I was watching a lot of matches in Paris and people had multiple reusable bottles because you’ve got your water, your energy drinks, your electrolytes and all sorts,” she said. Nadal, a 22-time grand slam title winner, has commented on his courtside routine, saying he takes “a sip from one bottle, and then from another. “There’s other players who prefer the plastic bags around the rackets after a restring. I don’t know how you would go about organising it but it would be a start.”

The third set saw Berankis create memories he will savour at the end of his career, the 32-year-old breaking early again and this time not only holding on but besting Nadal in some of the most fluent tennis of the match. His forehand sizzled, his serve was reliable and he won dramatic points in the fourth set too, including the last before the rain came down. That very much worked today, giving me lots of chances to constantly break or get close to a break. “I felt really good from the start,” he said. It made for a compelling contest and it was not until his fifth service game that his 5ft 9in opponent showed weakness, a dreadful double fault to give a break point that Nadal gobbled up, to take the set 6-4. “It wasn’t the best start, but it was probably the best finish,” Nadal said.
