Carlos Sainz was next to put in a representative lap, with a 1m49s exactly putting him behind his team-mate, before improving to take the top spot on his second lap with a 1m42.967s. Bottas improved to second to split the Ferraris before taking the top spot, before much of the field emerged with five minutes remaining as conditions improved. Leclerc improved to a 1m43.801s on his second attempt, which remained the only one on the timesheet for 10 minutes, before Yuki Tsunoda put in a 1m51.373s in his AlphaTauri. Both Britons and Sainz opted for an installation lap and pitted, while Leclerc went on to put the first time of the weekend on the board with a 1m44.769s. Leclerc led early on, with Sainz then taking the top spot, before Bottas demoted the pair, setting a 1m42.249s with just five minutes left on the clock. The Alfa Romeo driver was battling the Ferraris of Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc for much of the hour-long practice, taking third place with his first attempt, a 1m46.056s.

Red Bull boss Christian Horner says it is "never nice" to hear boos but insists Max Verstappen "accepts" the reaction from the British GP crowd.

Join Sky Sports F1 for extensive coverage across the British GP weekend - the race starts at 3pm on Sunday, July 3. While some cheered the Dutchman, he was the only driver who encountered any sort of negativity. "Then this comes out and we felt we had made a very strong statement through the action of actually dropping Juri from the team and not in any way condoning any form of racism and discrimination. That is competition. The boos for Verstappen also followed his comments in the media on Thursday where he condemned Piquet's racially offensive comments in reference to Hamilton, but also insisted Piquet - who is his partner Kelly's father - was "definitely not a racist" and suggested the scandal had been "blown out of proportion". The condemnation facing Nelson Piquet has escalated as evidence of further racist and also homophobic slurs he has made against Lewis Hamilton has emerged. Mercedes has revealed the scale of the updates that it is bringing to Formula 1's British Grand Prix having altered numerous areas of its car.

F1 British GP: Sainz tops dry FP2 from Hamilton and Norris (autosport.com)

Bottas, who had set the pace in first practice with a 1m42.249s, ran to 11th over Ocon and Alex Albon - the Thai-Brit the sole Williams driver to receive car upgrades for Silverstone and he spent a chunk of the session with his right sidepod coated in pink flo-vis. His McLaren was dropped off its rear jack in the pits and then in the confusion, the mechanic on the left-rear corner tried to fit a tyre the wrong way around. A lull while all 20 cars hit the pits then gave way to the fastest soft-tyre running, with Norris soon climbing to the top of the leaderboard as he emerged on the red rubber. In a frenetic opening third of FP2, Leclerc then lowered the times to 1m29.462s on mediums to end the yellow-walled running as the pacesetter with a tenth in hand over Sainz. Sainz set the pace courtesy of his 1m28.942s effort in the first representative dry running of the weekend to sit pretty by a little over a tenth ahead of Hamilton and Norris. After the changeable conditions of the first practice session left only 10 drivers to set a time, the track was a hive of early activity as soon as the hour-long FP2 got underway on Friday.

McLaren's Daniel Ricciardo also showed his support for Hamilton, posting a message on Instagram that read: "Discrimination and racism has no place in this sport or our society. The quality of the race, the quality of the Silverstone experience, the atmosphere and scale of the event is amazing.” And the heart of it all, the thing that makes the whole thing sing is a humdinger of a track offering high-octane entertainment. A new stage will be erected in the reconfigured central area with a string of high end performers appearing across the weekend including Example, Sigala, Bastille, Mabel and Sam Ryder of Eurovision fame. The wing alone is host to 2,284 panels producing almost a megawatt of power. It brought out the red flag and a delay while the barrier was repaired. Horner tells FIA “don't dick” with 2023 F1 aero rules (autosport.com)

Christian Horner has urged the FIA not to “dick” with the 2023 Formula 1 technical regulations in an attempt to address porpoising.

“And the devil is in the detail. “I think the difficulty is these cars were designed around a ground effect set of rules they were designed to try and improve overtaking. And the sport has to adapt and change as a result of that. “So I don't think that's the correct way to go about it. “And the most important thing, and the biggest way to achieve stable costs, is stability. If you change now for '23 the size of the diffuser or the stay, it's all in the bin.”

Red Bull team boss Christian Horner thinks Formula 1 risks going down a 'dangerous avenue' of the FIA dictating car set-ups amid its porpoising clampdown.

Williams team boss Jost Capito echoed Horner's thoughts on the complexity of the metric, saying: "The proposal is much too complicated. The technical directive is set to be discussed further by teams at next week's F1 Commission meeting. Any car that fails to comply with the limits will risk exclusion from grands prix.

This nearly caught out Sainz as he languished in the drop zone after the initial laps in the middle segment, but the Spaniard was able to jump up the order at the halfway point, after which the rain falling ever harder meant no drivers were able to improve and the elimination order was set. Nicholas Latifi was delighted to make it through to Q3 for the first time in 2022, but he did not set a representative time in the final segment and so finished 10th and last of the shootout runners. Verstappen had led the way through Q1 and Q2 and appeared to be on course to complete a clean sweep as he also topped the times ahead of the final runs in the third segment.

Horner: Porpoising crackdown heading into 'dangerous avenue' (PlanetF1)

Christian Horner fears F1 could be heading down a “dangerous avenue” with the recently-announced porpoising clampdown influencing car set-ups.

“I understand on the grounds of safety this is being introduced, because the porpoising on a limited amount of cars is obviously at an extreme level, and they are looking into having that mechanism to control that. “At what point do they say ‘you have to run this rear wing, or a certain ride height?’ It’s a dangerous avenue to go down. But although safety is the primary reason for wanting to eradicate porpoising, with drivers having reported severe back pain, Horner feels it is the wrong move for the FIA to be dictating how cars are set up – and also how the checks will be carried out.
